Course Syllabus
Sustainable destination planning and development 15 Credits*,
First Cycle Level 1

Learning Outcomes
After completing the course the student shall be able to;

Knowledge and understanding

· Discuss and show an understanding of the three pillars of


sustainability (environmental, social and economic), including the
UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, in relation to tourism and
destination development. (1)
· Demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes destination
development and planning. (2)
· Explain different types of tourism development and how these affect
the tourism industry and the local community. (3)
· Explain the different steps that are involved and the considerations
that need to be made when implementing a tourism plan. (4)
· Explain the political environment in which tourism development
takes place and situate this in relation to sustainable development.
(5)

Competence and skills

· Conduct a project on destination development project linked to a


specific destination. (6)
· Demonstrate the use of various tools in the development ansd
planning of a destination. (7)

Judgment and approach

· Critically assess different aspects of tourism development and its


relationships to the economy, environment and host community. (8)

· Conduct a critical analysis of the different ways in which destination


development can be implemented. (9)

Course Content
In this course students will learn about essential aspects of destinations
management, i.e. sustainable development and the planning of
destinations. Students will be introduced to the principles of destination
development and planning and the role of tourism as an agent of
sustainable development. Development is examined from various
perspectives to demonstrate the merits and deficiencies of tourism
development and illustrate the various pathways to sustainable
development. Tourism is presented as a developmental choice with
impacts on the local and global level of the natural and socio-economic
environment and its relationship to sustainability is established.

The role of planning in sustainable destination development is discussed


and various approaches in planning are presented to reveal the process
and the considerations for integrated destination planning. The course uses
various teaching methods including case studies and group work to actively
involve the students so that they can independently develop a destination
plan.

Lectures, seminars and group work.

Grades
The Swedish grades A - F.

The final grade is based on all the assessment aspects.

Prerequisites
60 credits from the programme International Tourism Management or equivalent knowledge
