Smart Helmet for Safety and Accident Detection using IOT

Smart Helmet for Safety and Accident Detection

using IOT

ABSTRACT:
Because of negligence of the Riders or Drivers while riding bikes or any vehicle,
unaware of traffic rules, over speed, drink and drive etc., as a result there can be death or any
major injuries. Due to this, their family will suffer a lot. There may be a permanent injuries or
disabilities due to financial situation of their family or lack of medical treatment. In order to
avoid the death and rash driving, drunk and drive, this project may useful for the people.

INTRODUCTION:
As the technology developed the rate of mishap is also increase. The riders avoid
wearing helmet without any specific reason. Moreover, over speeding and drink and drive have
become common issues. Due to the lack of experience or focus and violation of traffic rules,
which leads to accidents So, with the help of technology we made sure that traffic rules are
followed, problems mentioned above are avoided and their effects are minimized. The idea of
developing this work comes from our social responsibility towards society. In many accidents
that occur, there is a huge loss of life. Many people die on roads every year that occur due to
bike accidents. There are various reasons for accidents such as not having adequate ability to
drive, defective two wheelers, rash driving, drink and drive, etc. But the main reason was the
absence of helmet on the person which leads to immediate death due to brain damage.
Therefore, it is important that there should be a facility to minimize the after effects of these
accidents. However, the main goal of our work is to make it mandatory for the rider to wear a
helmet during the ride, to prevent drink and drive scenario and over speeding or rash riding by
motorcyclists and also provide proper medical attention when met with accident by alerting the
concerned person which will provide solutions to other major issues for accidents.

LITERATURE SURVEY

EXISTING SYSTEMS
Jennifer William et al.[1] proposed system in which the intelligent helmet ensures the
safety of the biker by making it necessary to wear the helmet and assure that rider hasn’t
consume any alcohol while driving the vehicle. The system also help in efficient handling of
aftermath of accident by sending a SMS with the location of the biker to person’s well-
wisher’s number to get proper and prompt medical attention, after meeting with an accident.

C. Prabha et al. [2] introduced system which can be used as a crash or rollover detector
the vehicle during and after a crash. When the vehicle meets with an accident the sensor in
the system detects and alert system with SMS to the user defined mobile number. The GPS
tracking and GSM alert based algorithm is designed and implemented in embedded system
domain. The proposed vehicle accident detection system trace the location of the ride
automatically and sends an alert message regarding accident.

Manjesh N et al.[3] demonstrated the smart helmet working, which makes the motorcycle
driving safer than before. It uses GSM and GPS technology. Sensors are placed at different
places of helmet, so when the rider crashes and the helmet hits the ground the sensor sense
and sends the signal to the microcontroller. The controller extracts GPS data and then GSM
module send message to the predefined number.

Asaad M.J. ET AL.[4] research was carried out to design a hardware and software of the
GPS based on GSM network. The proposed GPS/GSM based system has two parts, first is a
mobile unit and another is controlling station. The system, interfaces, connections, data
transmission and reception of data among the mobile unit and control stations are
successfully working. These results are compatible with GPS technologies.

FEASIBILITY

1. ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY : The cost estimation of the project is ₹7000,

which is quite low, where the accuracy of the project is also high and hence it proves
to be economically feasible.

2. TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY: The product uses cheap and open sourced
components, which are readily available in the market. It uses a technology, which
can easily be configured. Hence it proves to be technically feasible.

3. OPERATIONAL FEASIBLITY : Operation of the entire model can be

achieved by using the host controller (Arduino), electrical actuators, sensors,
controller circuit and mechanical system.. The controller gives the sequence of
programming for the required operation to be done.

DISADVANTAGES OF EXISTING SYSTEMS

1. Waterproofing required for hardware.
2. Internet package cost and sms pack cost to be bare by user
3. If GPM network is not there SMS cannot be sent.

OBJECTIVES OF PROPOSED SYSTEM

1. The proposed system is not only used to save the human life, but also
a. prevents vehicle theft.
b. Emergency medical service
c. Alert to friends and relatives.
2. In order to avoid the death and rash driving, drunk and drive, this project may useful
for the people.

METHODOLOGY

a) Helmet Section:

Fig 1: Helmet Section

This section consists of push button, alcohol sensor, accelerometer, micro controller,
RF transmitter. When the rider has worn the helmet, the push button is pressed. Alcohol sensor
measures the presence of alcohol in rider’s breath. Accelerometer measures tilting of the
helmet. The output of these components will act as input for microcontroller which is on the
helmet. The microcontroller processes the data and sends it to the bike section using RF
transmitter.

b) Bike Section:

RF Receiver
PiCamera

Raspberry pi
GPS module ESP_01

Relay Ignition
Power supply

RF receiver receives the data and the data is transmitted to the microcontroller.
Microcontroller makes the decision according to the output of the helmet section.
There are two conditions to start bike ignition:
 Push button should be pressed when a rider wears the helmet.

 Rider should not be alcoholic.

When the output of the helmet section matches these two conditions, then the bike ignition will
start.

 When an accelerometer measures the tilting of helmet with respect to ground as zero,
it means that an accident has occurred. Immediately Capture accident image and
notified the
Respective person through the mail with location and picture for more clarification.
Then they can provide the immediate medical requirement and they can also inform
about the incident to the police station. If the accident is minor then the rider can abort the
accident notification to the registered number.

Hardware Requirements:
1. Arduino Uno
2. Push Button
3. RF Transmitter
4. RF Receiver
5. Alcohol Sensor
6. Accelerometer
7. Raspberry Pi
8. PiCamera
9. ESP-01
10. Ignition
11. Relay

Software Requirements:
1. Arduino IDE
2. Serial Monitor
3. Web Browser

CONCLUSION:
The system designed provides safety and reduces the after effects of the accident, notifying
about the accident will provide timely care and treatments to the victim, reducing the severe
impacts on the Raider. The fingerprint authorization prevents vehicle theft and provides
security. The alcohol detection will prevent drink and drive scenario and the effects of drink
and driving to public and the rider himself. Android application built for the system will ensure
the smooth functioning of the system. Speed monitoring of the vehicle will prevent over
speeding rash riding and violation of traffic rules.
