Setting Ink-Damp Curves

From the Main Screen, touch the “Ink/Dampener Curves” Button.

Enter the password “654321”

5
MDGM 430 Max, 440, & A-2 Footprint Shaftless Press Console Touch Screen Controls

Touch the “Dampener Curve” button. The Ink and Dampener Curve setting procedures are
identical. This example will show the Dampener Curve.

The Dampener Curve Setting Screen will appear. The Ink and Dampener “curves” are actually 3
line approximations of a curve. This is covered in detail in another document (Calculating Ink and
Dampener Curves for MDGM 440/A2 Shafted and Footprint Shaftless Presslines). This document

6
MDGM 430 Max, 440, & A-2 Footprint Shaftless Press Console Touch Screen Controls

only covers the touch screen controls. Each of these 3 lines is constructed by providing a
Setpoint (starting Point), in percent press speed, and a Slope value.

To enter a Setpoint, touch the desired “Setpoint Thumbwheel”.

A data entry “thumbwheel” will appear. Touch the up and down arrows assigned to each digit to

7
MDGM 430 Max, 440, & A-2 Footprint Shaftless Press Console Touch Screen Controls

set a number between 0-99. After the desired number is reached, press enter (ENT). The value
of the Setpoint will display the new number. If the “CAN” (Cancel) button is pressed, the entry will
be aborted and the value will not be changed. Repeat this step for each Setpoint setting.

To enter a Slope, touch the desired “Slope” Thumbwheel.

8
MDGM 430 Max, 440, & A-2 Footprint Shaftless Press Console Touch Screen Controls

A data entry thumbwheel will appear. Use the arrow buttons to change the value. This value is
actually Slope x 100, so if a slope of 1.5 is desired, enter a value of 150. When finished, press
ENT. Repeat this step for each slope setting.

The Curve values are now active on the press.

Auto-Sequencing

Function On Buttons: These buttons, including Impressions On, Damp Forms On, Ink Forms
On, Damp Feed On, Ink Motors On, and Micrometrics On, are three
position thumbwheel switches. When these buttons are pressed, a pop-
up window will open that displays an active thumbwheel. The active
thumbwheel is used to enter the sequence on delay time for each print
function. These values are entered in tenths of a second. For example, a
setting of 15 will cause a 1.5 second delay. These timers are only active
if Auto-Sequencing is on (see Main Screen). Note that the Impressions
are usually hardware configured to come on at continuous run, so the
Impressions On timer may have no effect.

Function Off Buttons: These buttons, including Impressions Off, Damp Forms Off, Ink Forms
Off, Damp Feed Off, Ink Motors Off, and Micrometrics Off, are three
position thumbwheel switches. When these buttons are pressed, a pop-
up window will open that displays an active thumbwheel. The active
thumbwheel is used to enter the sequence off delay time for each print
function. These values are entered in tenths of a second. For example, a
setting of 15 will cause a 1.5 second delay. These timers will activate
only when the Auto-Slowdown button is pressed (see Main Screen).
Note that the Impressions are usually hardware configured not to turn off
until the press has stopped, so the Impressions Off timer may have no
effect.

Sequence On : This button is a two position thumbwheel switch. When this button is

16
MDGM 430 Max, 440, & A-2 Footprint Shaftless Press Console Touch Screen Controls

pressed, a pop-up window will open that displays an active thumbwheel.

The active thumbwheel is used to enter the Sequence On threshold
speed. This speed (entered in percent 0-99) is the speed that print
functions will begin to time on during an auto-sequence start-up. Note
that Auto-Sequencing must be turned on for the timers to be active (see
Main Screen).

Sequence Off : This button is a two position thumbwheel switch. When this button is
pressed, a pop-up window will open that displays an active thumbwheel.
The active thumbwheel is used to enter the Sequence Off threshold
speed. This speed (entered in percent 0-99) is the speed that print
functions will begin to time off during an auto-slowdown. Note that Auto-
Slowdown will function even if Auto-Sequencing is not on.

Auto Stop: This button is a two position thumbwheel switch. When this button is
pressed, a pop-up window will open that displays an active thumbwheel.
The active thumbwheel is used to enter the Auto Stop speed. This speed
(entered in percent 0-99) is the speed that the press will stop during an
auto-slowdown. This speed is usually set to one or two percent. The
setting has to be greater than or equal to Inch Speed. Note that Auto-
Slowdown will function even if Auto-Sequencing is not on.

The Advanced Count Functions Screen

The Advanced Count Functions Screen (Single Mode)

This screen can be used to calculate the Gross Count and Waste Count for a run. It can also be
used to set up batch counters for single press runs with multiple versions or fold options.
The general count functions (upper left corner) are simply copies of the ones found on the Main
Screen. Please refer to that section for more information.

Start Job: When this button is pressed at the start of a new press run, it will move
the current Gross Copy Count value into the Gross Count at Start
display. This button will illuminate green after being pressed. The Close
Job button will turn gray.

Close Job: When this button is pressed at the end of a press run, it will move the
current Gross Copy Count into the Gross Count at End display and
calculate the total Gross Run Count. It also moves the current Good
Copy Count into the Good Count at End display. If the Gross Count at
Start is greater than or equal to the Gross Count at End, an Error
Message is displayed. Then it subtracts the Good Count at End from the
Gross Run Count to produce the Total Run Waste. If the Good Count at
End is greater than or equal to the Gross Run Count, an Error Message
will be displayed. This button will illuminate red after being pressed. The
Start Job button will turn gray.

Batch Mode: This is a toggle type pushbutton. It is used to switch between Mode and
Batch mode. Single mode is used for standard, single version press

18
MDGM 430 Max, 440, & A-2 Footprint Shaftless Press Console Touch Screen Controls

runs. In Single mode, the Good Count at End is equal to the Good Copy
Count. In Single mode, the button will be gray and display the word
“Single”. Batch mode is used to break the Good Copy Count into batches
for multiple versions, folder modes, or destinations. There can be a total
of seven batches. In Batch mode, the button will illuminate green, and
display the word “Batch”. In Batch mode, the Advanced Count Functions
Screen will appear as shown below.

Advanced Count Functions Screen (Batch Mode)

The following items are either unique to, or function differently in, Batch mode.

Footprint Shaftless Initial Synchronization and power up procudure

Initial Synchronization of the Folder

The following procedure should be used to initialize the home positions of the drive system. It
should be performed after any of the following events have occurred:

• The drive system has been powered down

• Power failure
• Control power to the folder has been turned off
• The folder has been moved with the “Folder Clutch” disengaged (i.e. in Local
Mode)
• A folder has been disengaged from a virtual driveshaft that has been running with
another folder

Note: In the event of power loss or the drive system being turned off, additional steps must be
performed before this procedure. These steps will be covered later.

1. Disengage all Tower, Folder and Line Shaft clutches.

2. Jog the folder(s) around to its “Home Position” mark.
3. Push in a Stop Button.
4. Engage the “Folder Clutch” only. This zeroes the folder drive.
5. Pull the Stop Button out
6. Jog the engaged folder around once, returning it to its Home Position mark. This
synchronizes the Virtual Master with the folder drive. From this point on, the Folder
Clutch should remain engaged.

Adding Towers to the Press Line

1. Engage any Line Shaft Clutches (NOT Tower Clutches) required to connect the desired
towers to the folder.
2. With the Tower Clutches disengaged (in Local Mode), Jog the tower(s) around to their
home position marks.
3. Push in a Stop Button on the tower.
4. Engage the Tower Clutch. This zeroes the tower drives to the Virtual Master.
5. Pull out the Stop Button.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 on each tower to be used.
7. The towers and folder are now synchronized with the Virtual Master.

49
MDGM 430 Max, 440, & A-2 Footprint Shaftless Press Console Touch Screen Controls

To Disengage Towers For Plate Changes, etc.

1. Jog the engaged pressline around to the folder’s home position mark. This should also
put the towers on their home position marks.
2. Disengage the desired “Tower Clutches”.
3. Perform the required tasks on the tower(s).
4. Jog the tower(s) around to its Home Position mark.
5. Verify that the folder is has not been moved (by motor power). Minor position drifts will
not affect timing. If the folder has been moved, but the Folder Clutch has NOT been
disengaged, return the folder to its mark. If it has been disengaged, the Initial
Synchronization procedure must be performed again.
6. Push in a Stop Button on the tower.
7. Engage the “Tower Clutch”.
8. Pull out the tower Stop Button

Independent Folder Operation

The folder can operate in Local mode with the Folder Clutch disengaged, however, this requires
an Initial Synchronization to be performed before connecting the folder to print towers. The
following procedure is recommended for single folder presslines and whenever possible on
multiple folder presslines.

1. Jog the pressline around until the folder is on its Home Position mark.
2. Disengage the folder Line Shaft Clutch. This represents a clutch to the right of the folder
(from the operator side).
3. Disengage the Line Shaft Clutch on the footprint (tower or folder) to the LEFT of the
folder. This represents a clutch to the left of the folder.
4. The folder is now isolated from the rest of the pressline, but still synchronized with the
Virtual Master. Perform required operations.
5. Return the folder to its mark.
6. Verify that the required towers are on their marks. If they are, engage the two line shaft
clutches that were disengaged in steps 2 and 3. The press is ready to run. If they are not,
continue to step 7.
7. Disengage the tower clutches in question.
8. Engage the above mentioned Line Shaft clutches.
9. Jog the towers around to their marks.
10. Push in a Stop Button on the tower.
11. Engage the Tower Clutch.
12. Pull out the tower stop button.

Power Up Procedure

Each drive cabinet is provided with two power sources; one high voltage 480VAC 3 phase
and one “low voltage” 120VAC single phase.

The 480 volt circuit provides the power to the drive module which uses it to power the main
drive motors. The disconnect handle located on the drive cabinet door is for the 480 volt
power.

The 120 volt circuit provides power for the control and communications circuits in the drive
system. This power if fed from the distribution panel located in the MDGM folder and tower
Junction boxes. There is an individual circuit breaker dedicated to the drive located in the
junction box. However, if control power must be turned off to the drive, the disconnect handle
on the door of the junction box can also be used. This will kill all single phase power
associated with the respective tower or folder.

The high voltage power can be turned off daily, if so desired. Occasionally, it might be
necessary to reset a drive fault (button located on the door of the drive cabinet). High voltage
can also be turned off if there is a problem with a specific drive module. The rest of the
system will still operate normally.

It is highly recommended that the low voltage control and communications power be left on
whenever possible. However, this is not always possible, and, in the event of a power failure,
it is better to turn off all disconnects before power comes back on.

The following procedure assumes that all drive high voltage disconnects and
tower/folder junction box disconnects have been turned off. If problems occur after a
brown out or momentary loss of power. Power everything down and follow the
procedure below.

1. Begin by turning on all Tower Junction Box Disconnects.
