Success Stories

Special children have limitations in some areas but they possess extraordinary talents in other areas. Rising Sun
Institute polishes such unique talents of the students and enable them to not only become more confident and self
reliant but make them all the more use full citizens as well. We try to provide them such kind of training
opportunities through which they can become contributors to the society rather than just consumers.
Rays of rising sun enlightens the dark lives of mentally retarded special children and gives them a hope for better
and happier life. Students of the institute have won many honors for their country, institute and families. Some

Maryam Dar

By birth Maryam Dar was a normal child but at the age of six years she suffered from Measles and Encephalitis,
after which she developed fits and lost her speech. This condition continued for ten years. Her fits were gradually
controlled by medicine but she had lost her confidence, did not take interest in any activity and had become
stubborn.
She joined Rising Sun Institute in 1991, after concerted efforts of the staff and management she started taking
interest in socio-cultural activities, vocational training and sports. Maryam Dar was selected for International
Special Olympics 1995 and she won first Gold Medal for Pakistan. Currently Maryam is working as Special
Helper Teacher in sewing department of vocational training section and is paid stipend by the institute. Her
achievements in Special Olympics are as followed:

Imran Khan

He is a 21 years old boy having mild mental retardation, deformed right ear and hearing impairment. At the time of
admission Imran Khan was a very aggressive and moody boy. He was over conscious of the fact that he was
different from his other age mates and was over sensitive towards comments of others. Sports played an
important role in his behaviour management. His success in sports not only gave boost to his self confidence but
also improved his behaviour. Now he is a very understanding and well behaved boy working as Special Helper
Teacher in wood work department. His performance in sports has been commendable and details of his
achievements are as followed:

Rising Sun Institute has brought a very positive change in his personality. Now he is a friendly and caring boy. He
is an excellent badminton Player, and has won one Gold, one Silver and one Bronze medal in International
Special Olympics 2003. He has also won a Bronze medal in cricket, while playing in India in 2004. In November
2005 he participated in pre-world Cup exhibition cricket match between India & Pakistan at Shanghai, China.
In 2006 he represented Pakistan in senior team in 1 st. World Cricket Cup at Mumbai, India and returned with a
Silver Medal. Presently, he is working as an Assistant in the woodwork department of Rising Sun Institute as a
confidant young man.

Shahzada Farhan Farooq


One of the early admissions of Rising Sun Institute, he is a Down’s syndrome child. He has special flare for music
and dances very well. He has represented Rising Sun Institute in many television shows. Farhan Farooq
participated in International Special Olympics in 1999 and won one bronze medal in Tennis. He is also doing
very well in vocational training, especially in weaving.

Nazia Majid
She is a mildly retarded girl with moderate degree hearing loss. But with the help of amplification devices she can
hear and communicate verbally. When she joined Rising Sun Institute in 1991, her main problems were negative
self image and low self confidence. She tried her best to stay away from social gatherings and didn’t like
communicating with others.
Along with academic and vocational training, special attention was given to improve her self confidence and self
image. After speech therapy and counseling her communication barriers gradually came to rubbles. Now she not
only actively participates in socio-cultural activities but she is also a bright athlete of the institute. She is working
as Special Helper Teacher in sewing department of vocational training section. Her achievements in
International Special Olympics are as followed:

Amna Bibi
She is a 25 year old mildly retarded girl, who comes from a low socio-economic family where her parents are not
well educated. Moreover, her two siblings are also mentally retarded. At the time of admission (i.e. in 2004) she
was very shy and her confidence level was also very low. Along with academics special emphasis was laid on her
sports and vocational training. In just four years time her personality has almost transformed from depressed and
confused to a confident and optimist one.
Currently she is working as special helper teacher in sewing department. Her achievements in International
Special Olympics are as followed:

Touqeer Ahmad He is Amna Bibi’s elder brother. After continuous failure in normal school his parents
brought him to Rising Sun Institute. But by that time he had become very shy, isolated and depressed. Lots of
efforts were required to get him out of this depression. Loving and considerate behaviour of teachers made him
felt wanted and accepted and he gradually started enjoying life. He was not only promoted as Special Helper
teacher in weaving department but he also won many medals in Special Olympics.

Waqas Ali

Waqas Ali has Cerebral Palsy along with moderate mental retardation. On admission (i.e. 2002) he had learning
problems and could not speak & walk properly. With proper teaching and training his communication has
improved and his motor coordination has also improved a great deal. He not only walks and runs but also plays
different games. His performance in vocational training has been so good that he has been promoted as Special
Helper Teacher in weaving department of vocational training section.
He also worked with British Council under Corporate Social Responsibility working attachment program of
British Council. He represented Pakistan in International Special Olympics – China in 2007 and won 5 th
prize in cycling. ___________________________________________________________________

Adil Abbassi

He has moderate mental retardation due to which not only his developmental milestones were delayed but he
was also unable to cope up with normal studies. He joined Rising Sun Institute in 2000 at the age of 14 years.
Considering his age and problem, along with education, vocational training was also started. He took keen
interest in weaving and gradually came up to the level that he was promoted as Special Helper Teacher in
weaving department.
Adil is a very active boy so his energies were utilized in sports and he has won following honors for his country:

He comes from a family where his two siblings are also mentally retarded. His mental retardation is of mild nature,
he was sent to a normal school but he didn’t do so good so parents brought him to Rising Sun Institute. He
showed tremendous improvement as far as his communication skills and self grooming is concerned. He
represented Pakistan in International Special Olympics and won 5th prize in swimming.
Now he is working as Sales Man in showroom of Nobel Television.

Rizwan Shahid
He is younger brother of Usman Shahid. He is moderately retarded and had behaviour problems at the time of
admission. After properly planned educational and behaviour management program he improved so much that
after being employed as mechanic in assembly line of Nobel television, he is now working as Supervisor at
assembly line of Nobel Television.

Jaffer Abbas
He came to Rising Sun Institute in 2000 at the age of 11 yrs. He was a shy looking, well behaved boy having
moderate mental retardation. After through assessment Individualized Educational Program was prepared for
him, with special emphasis on academics and personal grooming. By the time he reached 13, vocational training
was also added into his training program. With constant supervision of trained staff he became so good that he
was recommended for job placement. He worked with British Council under Corporate Social Responsibility
working attachment program of British Council. His performance was very satisfactory there.
Right now he is an employee of Shaukat Khanam Cancer Hospital and working there as Patient Guide.

Umer javed, a 12 years old boy was brought to Rising Sun Institute with following complaints:
• Delayed developmental milestones

• Right side of body muscles weaker than the left side

• Delayed speech

• Articulation problems

• Intellectual performance behind his age

Tests and procedures used for Assessment


Informal Assessment:
Ten days observational period was given to the child for getting settled in the school
environment and with the psychologist as well. Teacher submitted his behavior observation
report indicating the need to improve his work related behavior and his communication skills.
She reported that he had almost all prewriting strokes and recognition of few alphabets. His
interaction with the teacher and class fellows was friendly and he was cooperative most of the
time.
Formal Assessment:
Portage Guide to Early Education was administered to evaluate the present functioning level of
the childe. Parents’ interview, student’s observation and practical involvement in given task
were used as means of completing the checklist. His responses to the items of checklist
indicated following results:

Academic Assessment: Academic assessment was used to evaluate his present functioning
level in different subject areas. On the basis of his formal and academic assessment his IEP
was developed.
Assessment by Physiotherapist and Speech therapist: Umer was assessed by the
physiotherapist and speech therapist, respectively. After detailed assessment and history
taking both professionals designed his individualized program.
Meeting with the parents: After the completion of assessment process, a meeting was held
with the parents. They were informed about the results and findings of assessment. The
proposed individualized educational plan was also discussed with them and given final shape
with their consent. One copy of each management and training program was given to the
parents so they could also follow it at home.

Tests and Procedures used:
• Draw a man test:
Draw a man is a shorter version of Goodenough – Harris Drawing test, specially
used for students with disabilities. Umers’ performance on this test, indicates
following results:
Mental Age: 6years 8months
• Slosson Intelligence Test:

Slosson Intelligence test is a verbal intelligence test, it assess the intellectual


ability of those children who can understand and use language as a mode of
communication. Umer’s scores on this test indicate following results:
 IQ range: 40 -50 (Which places him in the category of moderate mental
retardation)

• Assessment by physiotherapist:

Assessment report of physiotherapist stresses that umer has learned all


exercises but he needs to carry out his exercise routine at home also.
Internship with British Council
Umer Javed was selected for paid internship at British Council under their
Corporate Social Responsibility Working Attachment Program.
Job Specification:He worked there as assistant invigilator during A levels / o
levels exams, he was responsible for every duty assigned by his supervisor. He
not only draw stipend from there but also came back with lots of praise, as his
performance was very satisfactory and he worked very efficiently.

Patient Guide at Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital


Right now Umer Javed is a full time employee of Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital. He works
there as a Patient Guide and draws 5000 Rs. Salary from there. He is so confident and dutiful
that his all colleagues respect and trust him.

Concluding Remarks
What started as a very long, tough and pains taking responsibility on the part of the parents,
and a very dedicated work from teacher’s point of view came to such an end that every one
related to special education or special children can feel proud of it. This success story
indicates that if parents, teachers and professionals work together with the child, they can
enable a child to become a contributor rather than just a consumer in society.

Umer Rehman comes from a family where
his four siblings are also affected by Cerebral
Palsy. He is an amazing artist, despite his
physical problems he paints so well that one
is totally amazed.

Imran Zubair
Won 1 Silver Medal and 1 Bronze Medal in
Badminton in International Special
Olympics Shanghai China in 2007

He joined Rising Sun Institute in 2006 and since then


has showed great deal of improvement in areas of
communication, sports and technical skills. He is now
fully trained in weaving – waves fine cloth on hand
loom and works as special trainer in vocational training
department.
