HOW PHILOSPHY AFFECTS OUR DAILY ACTIVITIES IN CAMPUS

Philosophy derived from Greek and Latin words; philo (beloved) and Sophia
(knowledge), therefore philosophy means love of knowledge. Philosophy has five (5)
major branches; metaphysics, epistemology, logic, ethics, and aesthetics. Understanding
the major branches of philosophy will help us to know better that even though we do not
aware of it, but we are constantly asking things that can be included as a practice of
philosophy.

First branch of philosophy, epistemology. In epistemology, people question about

knowledge and rational belief. For short term, epistemology is the study of knowledge,
means that the questions are about something that we choose to believe something is true
or not. Our actions sometime come from our beliefs, but are our own beliefs are the right
ones for this society. Knowledge that we own, we obtain, we practice are the knowledge
that someone passed on us, but what if it is wrong, what if the knowledge that we collect
is the wrong ones, apart from the rest. These affects the campus activities, about how can
we be certain of anything, what will I study in this major, etc. this kind of questions will
make us better students as we value every knowledge more.

Second is metaphysics, the study of reality. These questions are about what reality beyond
facts, that we can see from our own eyes and the reality that we see from our own eyes.
Metaphysical questions can be in a lot of forms, questioning about the nature of objects,
person, time, space, causation, laws of nature, and modality. This can include god, soul,
afterlife, justice, etc. Questions regarding metaphysics usually asked by younger kids, as
they grow up. Metaphysical questions are the first thing they ask, because the nature of
something is always interesting. As we grow up as an adult, we already know few things
about things that beyond our eyes, and some of us choose to never ask these metaphysical
questions again, and some of us still seek to find the answer further with these types of
questions. There are no right or wrong actions, the journey of seeking knowledge is
always open for everyone, in campus these types of questions are not that common in
daily activities, people wouldn’t just ask someone about these metaphysical questions
because these questions are heavy and time-consuming. People would have to gather for
this occasion only, such as religion groups.

Third is logic. The study of validity of patterns. In this branch, we focus on how we can
make sure of things based on claims, reasoning, and premises. Logical validation is the
result of logical questions. Today, with the advanced technology arrived at our face, we
should be able to differentiate, things that are logical and things that are not. With our
gadgets, we can access so many information, new or old, but we have to be able to know
whether this knowledge or claim on the internet are real and not fall into fake news
territory. In campus activities, especially in class, we use this logical question to
understand the lecturer more and act like we are in the problem ourselves. We cannot
accept new knowledge without questioning its validity. In the search of validity, we can
learn more and deeper that we gain from the class, thus making us more understanding
the situation.

Fourth is ethics, this concerns human conduct, character, and values. The study of right
and wrong. These kinds of questions can be a parameter of the goodness of a person.
Ethics are hard to be generalized, because people’s actions are always their decision, and
every people’s decision are hard on their own. What is right on society must be set to a
standard that is why there are laws and rules, even in our campus. Letting everyone know
that every action has their consequences and people will have to adapt to the society’s
kind of good.

Last but not least is aesthetics, the study of art and beauty. Art and beauty come in many
forms, nature and human-made. These questions investigate the experience of engaging
in such activities such as painting, dancing, acting, and playing. In campus, especially in
engineering department, there is a major that focus on this philosophy branch.
Architecture finds way to improve art and beauty in this world. Not only architecture, but
other major has their part on aesthetics, it is just architecture is the one that focus on it the
most.

To conclude, philosophical questions are always interesting and we as humans should not
stop asking about things that surround us to value our lives more. And in terms of the
drawing assignment, it shows that how people look at things in which kind of branch of
philosophy they used in the drawings, some use logical questions, some use
epistemological questions. Based on how they see things we can point out what kind of
strength they have, for logical people or epistemological people.
