CHEME 260 Thermodynamics

Open Book Exam

March, 5 2008

1. (30%) Carbon dioxide is compressed in a reversible, isentropic process from 100 kPa
and 20oC to 400 kPa using a steady-flow device with one inlet and one outlet.
Determine work input per kg of carbon dioxide. Assume that carbon dioxide is an
ideal gas with constant specific heat.

2. (40%) A 50kg iron block and a 20kg copper block, both initially at 80 oC, are dropped
into a very large lake at 15oC. Thermal equilibrium is established after a while as a
result of heat transfer between the blocks and the lake water. Determine the total
entropy change for this process.

3. (30%) 2-lbm of water (V+L mixture) at 300psia fills a weighted piston-cylinder

device whose volume is 2.5 ft3. The water is then heated at constant pressure until the
temperature reaches 550oF. Determine the resulting change in the water’s total
entropy.
