WEBSITE AND CLASSROOM BLOG CREATION TOOLS

Name: Cellular Respiration Lab

Directions: Using the template below, describe how students could use a blog, wiki, or other website-
creation tool to learn required learning standards in your content area: For an A grade provide an idea that
reaches a Level of Technology Implementation of 4 or above. Remember higher levels (4-6) require that
students assume adult/professional roles; engage in higher-order thinking; and use technology
create/publish original content for their classmates and/or others beyond their school/classroom. The
learning activities and products should be engaging and meaningful to the students and to others who will
view/use/benefit from students’ work. Review your handouts on Engaged Learning, Authenticity, and LoTi.
Grade Level: High School 9-12

Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: SB1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate
information to analyze the nature of the relationships between structures and functions in living
cells.
e. Ask questions to investigate and provide explanations about the roles of photosynthesis and
respiration in the cycling of matter and flow of energy within the cell (e.g., single-celled alga).
Brief Description of Learning Experience:
Students will be creating a procedure that investigates and explains the role of cellular respiration. Students
will be divided into groups. Each group will be given the same material to test, and equipment that will be
used to test for cellular respiration. However, each group will need to design a testable procedure that
explains cellular respiration. Then each group will put their results, procedures, and evidence of explanation
on Sway for all their classmates to see. This lab will be done over the course of a week.
This lab will be introduced with photosynthesis and the relationship between structures and functions in
living cells. The audience of this lab will be students in all the biology course at the High School and could
have possible findings that allow for a broader audience.

Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating

Student Engagement/Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): What LoTi would this lesson be and
Why?
LoTi 4, Integration, reaches mid to high ranges of cognitive skills and the learning process is very
meaningful or authentic to the students. The instructional model is constructivist. The teacher
designs learning experiences where students make choices and assume adult and professional roles
as teachers, explorers, and producers. Learning tasks are more open ended and frequently do not
have a right/ wrong answers.
Importance of technology:
Using a web creation tool such as Sway is critical to this project because it allows students to share their
experiment and procedures with other groups. The project could be completed with other forms of
technology, but by using Sway the interaction and instant communication between the teacher and other
classmates is much more efficient and safer. Other types of technology that could be used is excel to help
with statistical analysis and word for creating a final report. In addition, students can present their sway or
convert their experiment to present with PowerPoint or Prezi. Students will also be using a CO2 detector to
gather data.

whole), include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you “borrowed” from others.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Since these tools are new, the rules are in constant flux, but here are some common principles that will help
you. First, know and follow district policies on posting student work, student photos, and videos with
images of students. Second, research the terms of use for each specific tool you want to use. The age
requirements are of special importance. Third, consider safety concerns. Who can see the student work?
Are students identifiable? And finally, know what tools are approved by your school district and under
what conditions. Consulting with your mentors, technology specialists, and administrators is always a good
idea. Make sure students names, locations, or any personal information is kept private. Also, make students
aware they are not allowed to contact any unknown person. Also, Sway allows teacher to have a password
protected site.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
I hope students enjoy collaborating with their classmates and creating their own lab. This experiment allows
them to become scientist and share their information. This will help students learn how science is done
outside of school settings.
Other comments about your proposed activity: I am very excited to see how much my students enjoy
becoming scientist and how they get to create their own procedure!
