HEADLINES
▪ Limited-service restaurants (LSR) in Indonesia registers 8% value growth, 1% outlet growth
and 5% transaction growth in 2018 to reach IDR26.0 trillion and 6,589 outlets
▪ Chained LSR benefits from millennials’ appreciation of fast and convenient food
▪ Pizza LSR records the fastest value growth of 13% in 2018
▪ KFC continues to be the leading player in the category in 2018
▪ LSR in Indonesia is projected to grow at a current value CAGR of 12% (8% 2018 constant
value CAGR) over the forecast period

PROSPECTS

Lsr Is Performing Healthily Thanks To Millennials


Limited-service restaurants saw an excellent performance during the review period due to
outlet expansion and increased transactions thanks to the rise in fintech companies and their
aggressive promotional activities, including cashback and discounts. Millennials, who appreciate
the ease, convenience and taste of fast food, are also contributing to category growth.

Localised Menus Continue To Be Preferred


The Indonesian foodservice industry is characterised by diverse consumers with varied tastes
and preferences. Foodservice players therefore need to be creative with new products, services
and offers. Capturing the trends is important, however players must still own the original
essence/identity/concept of the products that they sell. Indonesians’ appetite for local tastes,
especially spicy food, is currently increasing, so McDonald’s is trying to incorporate local
flavours into its original menu by offering Nasi Uduk with chili paste, durian cendol McFlurry,
burger balado, and burger with rendang flavour. CRP packaged Indomie, which is very well
accepted by Indonesians, into a contemporary food that was presented in a building with the
concept of a meeting place through the Warunk Upnormal brand. Millennial consumers do not
mind spending Rp20,000 on a portion of Indomie if they can get Wi-Fi and socialise with
friends/colleagues. This trend is set to remain as the pricing is affordable and familiar tastes are
often preferred.

Lsr Will Continue To See Strong Growth Over the Forecast Period
The outlook for the restaurant business in Indonesia is predicted to continue positively as long
as the dollar exchange rate is favourable because although most of the raw materials used by
LSR players are sourced locally, some such as meat and cheese are imported. As the Rupiah is
currently getting stronger, the outlook is positive, however players should prepare in case the
rupiah weakens, as it did towards the end of the second semester of 2018. As fintech
companies are competing to gain the local population’s favour in using their products, and more
and more companies as such are emerging, this indirectly gives the foodservice industry a
growth boost going forward. In terms of the format itself, more players are opting for a grab and
go concept both in their food varieties and packaging. For example, drinks are packaged in

bottles or plastic sealed cups, making them easily portable. Also, more snacking options are
available which can be easily purchased and consumed on the go to meet millennials’ demand
for fast and convenient food.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

Kfc Continues To Be the Leading Player


KFC is the leading player in 2018, recording strong value sales growth in the year and over
the review period. Before entering the fourth quarter of 2018, KFC had already reached its
growth target. Interestingly, when most restaurant players are busy working on urban areas,
KFC is targeting the East of Indonesia and low-income consumers. East Indonesia is perceived
as a potential area to be cultivated because the region is undergoing infrastructure
development, which is having an impact on the economic development of its people.

Local Lsr Chains Are Joining the Competition With Strong Strategies
Local brands, including Eatlah and Flip Burger, which have emerged in recent years, have
their own key success factors depending on their concepts and target markets. For example, the
target market of Eatlah is the millennial generation and those who work near Eatlah outlets, so
targeted marketing and adjusting to the needs of this group is essential. By using online food
delivery services, Eatlah is able to reduce its operational costs as it only needs a kitchen for
food preparation. Around 60 - 80% of sales are reportedly made online through third party online
services. The company’s outlet expansion strategy is influenced by this development and
focuses on creating an easier and more convenient way for drivers to collect the food.
Standalone outlets make it easier for online motorcycle taxi drivers to take customers’ orders, so
the brand is found more in the standalone formats than in mall outlets.
As the younger generation is very familiar with social media, marketing through social media
such as Instagram is crucial. Another brand that is also on the rise is Flip Burger, which is
essentially a cheaper alternative to Burger King and McDonald’s. As it is a local brand, it can
offer cheaper prices than the international brands, which have certain standards to meet and
requirements from the central company. Customisation based on consumers’ preferences will
consequently be harder than it is for local chains.
