Training Course SEP-601 EXERCISE 3

Power Automation & Substation
Västerås - Sweden

EXERCISE 3
Task
Purpose of this exercise is to learn and understand:
- Parameter Setting Tool and its interface with the Application Configuration tool
(CAP 531)
- Getting familiar to PST, copy/paste, filtering, download and upload possibilities.

The protection device is connected to the line according to the following diagram:

Procedure (Overview)
- Remove (hide) from the setting list the voltage and current transformers that are not
used.
- Modify the application configuration to get 2 setting groups available for your
device.
- Copy / Paste setting group one into setting group 2. Modify some small parts of
setting group 2.
- Write in the IED both setting group 1 and 2.
- From front HMI manually change some settings. With filtering possibilities in PST
find out which settings have been changed.

Procedure (Detailed)
1. Start Parameter setting for the IED that you have used in the previous exercise.

In this design, only 3 voltage transformers and 3 current transformers are used. It is not
necessary to show all the settings for the transformers that are not used. They should
just be hidden to the final user1:

The example is done for CT n. 4:

1
Clearly this will be done AT THE END of the engineering, when it is 100% clear what will not be used

Continue in the same way, and hide settings for CT4, CT5 and CT6:

hide settings for VT10, VT11 and VT12:

2. Adding the second setting group.

Exit PST, open CAP 531 for your device. Insert a new Worksheet with any name you
like, and insert into this Worksheet this function block:

Do “File” / “Close All”. EXIT CAP 531 (DO NOT COMPILE).

3. “Copy / Paste” setting group 1 into setting group 2.

When you have the 2 setting groups available, show setting group 1 and copy it

then show setting group 2, and do “paste”:

Check all the settings that have been changed in after the “Copy” / “Paste”:

If you stay with the mouse on the changed parameters (bold), you can see their
previous value.
Do “File “ / “Save” and there will not be any changed parameter!

4. Write (download) all settings into the IED.

5. From the from front HMI change some settings in setting group 2. For instance
set earth-fault relay (TEF1) in forward direction (instead of non-directional).
Change some other settings in the earth-fault relay, as you want.

When this is done, fom PST read all IED settings:

It can be helpful to manually restore the different settings, but if they are too many, it is
better to exit PST (close), open it again, and upload (read) settings again by choosing:
