THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEPRESSION LEVEL AND FAMILY SUPPORT

ON THE INDEPENDENCE LEVEL OF THE ELDERLY IN PADUKUHAN

ABSTRACT

Background: Degenerative diseases cause the elderly to experience physical setbacks in

meeting their daily need activities. It is also one of the stressors for the elderly that can
increase the risk of depression. Optimal family support encourages health improvement of the
elderly. It is also the part of affection and attention in the effective function of the family.
Objective: This research aims to determine the relationship between depression level and
family support on the independence level of the elderly
Methodology: This research employed descriptive correlation with cross sectional design.
The research subjects were elderly aged 60-74 years who actively participate in elderly
gymnastics and Elderly Health Care in Padukuhan Kalirandu Bangunjiwo Kasihan Bantul
Yogyakarta. The samples were 80 respondents which was taken by using total sampling. Data
was collected by interview and questionnaire. The data was retrieved by using Geriatric
Depression Scale (GDS) questionnaire sheet, family support and Barthel Index. Data analysis
used Ordinal Regression.
Results: The result of the research showed the relationship between depression level and
independence level of not-depressed elderly with independence level of 36.3%. Kendall Tau
analysis results obtained p value 0,000 (p <5%). The correlation coefficient was 0.442 which
indicated a moderate relationship. The results of the research showed the relationship
between family support and independence level of elderly with moderate and high family
support with independence level of 25.0%. Ordinal Regression analysis results obtained p
value of 0,000 (p <5%) on both variables. The Wald obtained the level of depression at
13,542 and family support at 12,435 which indicated a close relationship.
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between depression level and family support
on the independence level of the elderly
Suggestion: Respondents are expected to be able to maintain psychological health by
interacting with others, telling problems to the closest people and getting closer to God.
