FOURTH YEAR B.ARCH.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IV

Affordable Housing

Research –Explore-Present

“Housing is not only a necessity of life; it has a pervasive impact on

all aspects of our existence. Housing – if it is adequate – provides

privacy and security against intrusions, both physical and emotional.

It is the principal locus of personal and family life. It defi nes our

community and determines our access to jobs, to services, to stores,

and to signifi cant other people in our lives. It contains not only our

material possessions, but our dreams and our despair.”

In today’s context, housing needs are changing. Technology, bylaws, life style,
economy are playing integral role in development of mass housing. Although
demand and supply principle cannot be presented in mass housing. Designing
housing theories and strategies keeping in mind urban development or
neighbourhood complete the architectural and social need. Specific research is
expected to understand role of housing on Affordable Housing Development.
The design should be practical solution.

In the first phase student are expected to research on housing and architecture.
Single architectural thought can guide and drive the design process to reach the
final result as SPACE.

In the second phase detailing of concept is expected, where actual/ book case
studies will play role to detail out the thought. Orientation of building, climate,
usage of each space, interaction within interior spaces are the prerequisites.

Third step consist Building construction method, material, services, and

technology

Completion consists all plans, sections, elevation and models.

The overall aim of the semester project is to provide feasible and attractive
housing needs to be conceptualized in a way that takes account the
contradictory needs of residents in the city. The project will focus at fostering
the vitality of urban dwelling in the city.

The aim is also to stimulate new architectural thinking on how to reflect local
character and context as a strong vision and identity at campus as well as
individual building level. There is constant shortage of reasonably priced
dwellings for a number of target groups. There is definitely a need for increased
housing supply and improved affordability. We as Architect don’t just want to
built more home, but better homes, built to high standards, both in terms of
design and environmental impact.
