Paul Francis S. Murao

Vince Karlo A. Peji

An undergraduate thesis outline submitted to the faculty of the Department of Information

Technology, College of Engineering and Information Technology, Cavite State University,

Indang, Cavite in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science

in Information Technology. Prepared under the supervision of Mr. Simeon E. Daez.

INTRODUCTION

Online reservation and ordering system services are website of local restaurants

and food cooperatives set up for customers to select from the interactive menus provided so

as the reservation and ordering process can take place. It is a system to capture customer

demand and record of type of materials, components and additional information for company

to forecast the demand.

We all know that having a website in a company or business will be a big help for

their progress.

Today many restaurants and fast food chains have their websites. Introducing

another concept which talks about how well a restaurant was able to cope, handle and

withstand adversities, to recover from those adversities and to turn them into opportunities.

A web-based system can be a useful tool for any institution and it’s a great help for

them to secure databases and make it accurate, reliable and more accessible. Information
Technology can be a process of upgrading current systems to make reservation and

ordering in verdiview restaurant. Management information system (MIS) refers to the

processing of information through computers to manage and support managerial decisions

within an organization. It includes systems termed transaction processing system, decision

support system, expert system, or executive information system.

Proposing this project is very essential specially for verdiview staff ; By this system,

they can easily pick up the reservations and order of the costomer effortlessly and not

costing much of time. Management information system is very important in verdiview

restaurant because it can provide reservation and ordering management system to make

reservations and orders to be computer-based and easy to use for the staff working in

verdiview restaurant

This computer-based information system can provide people the easiest way to have

a reservation and order. This process cost less time and efforts in managing reservation and

order.

Statement of the Problem

The first problem is that they don’t have a system to facilitate customer

orders.Their ordering system is traditional, unreliable and inaccurate. Example is when a lot

of customers arrived, sometimes the staff can’t handle the guests. (see Appendix Figure 1)

Another problem is the reservation because it is a popular dining destination. The

restaurant is well visited by tourists. Other guests are complaining about their spot because

the restaurant doesn’t have a systematic way in receiving their guests. (see Appendix Figure

2)
The last problem is that they have no means to present their menu digitally. Their

marketing team doesn’t have tools present the dishes/menu in a digitalized more appealing

way. (see Appendix Figure 3)

Objective of the Study

The objective of this study is to develop the Verdiview Restaurant Reservation and

Ordering Management System to be more effective in ordering and reservation as well as

giving good services and to build a computerized Restaurant Reservation and Ordering

Management System.

The study specifically aims to:

1. Build a computerized reservation and ordering management system, to make

reservation and ordering reliable, accurate, complete, more accessible and

easy to find;

2. Provide features on keeping and updating record for reservation and ordering

to make the customer comfortable in choosing their meals, also the system

will help the staff, customers and manager to process the orders and

reservation easily and to get information efficiently;

3. Create a system that will showcase verdiview’s menu in digitalized and more

appealing way;

4. Upgrade the reservation and ordering transactions and also able to add up

their marketing strategy;

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The researchers conducted research on that restaurant to know about their

problems and to know how to solve those problems. In this case the researchers have to go

there to personally interview their manager regarding their problems.

The main beneficiaries of the study are the customers who dine in Verdiview

restaurant. The system will help the customers to take the orders and reservation easily and

to get information efficiently.

It will also help the staff to gather reservation and orders easily from the people

who visit their restaurant because the system will help them to know specifically what exactly

the customer wants by using the system provided.

The future researchers will earn money if the owner of the restaurant wants to buy

the system for upgrading their traditional way of reservation and ordering process.

TIME AND PLACE OF THE STUDY

The study was conducted from January 2019 to May 2020. Searching of relevant

data were conducted at the Reading Room of the College of Engineering and Information

Technology (CEIT) and Ladislao N. Diwa Memorial library at Cavite State University,

Indang, Cavite. Data were acquired from books, journals and articles and also gathered from

the internet. (see Appendix, Figure 4)

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This research will be conducted to determine if it is efficient to establish a website

with the utilization of an reservation and ordering system as distinguished by the

management and staff of Verdiview Restaurant. The study composed of four (5) modules

such as:

The Verdiview Information Module, In this module includes the records of

reservation and order of verdiview restaurant.. This module contains database about

people’s reservation and orders. It includes addresses, numbers, name of the customer.
The Reservation Module, In this module contains the records of reservation of the

verdiview restaurant that was filed by the customer. But there is a limited reservation for

customer to make sure that their still have available spot for other upcoming customers. The

function of this module is to know when the spot are available or unavailable.

Only 3 out of 9 huts are available for reservations.

The Ordering Module, In this module contains the menu of the certain food that they

offer. The function of this module is that the customers will see their orders process.

The User Module, In this module identify the users which are the customers, chef,

assistant chef, order assembler and waiters. The function of this module is to help the

customers on how to choose order while the restaurant staff will process the orders.

The kitchen Module, in this module contains the order of the customers that need

to cook or prepare.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents a collection of related literature and writings of recognized

experts, both of which have significant bearing or relation to the problem under investigation.

Literature related to the study serves as basis and tool for a total understanding of the study.

Management Information System

According to Stoner et al. (1995) Management Information System is the computer-

based information system used for effective planning, decision-making and control. This was

through a database. As leaders of departments, good information ought to be maintained

and controlled in a database by use of security measures through quotas, usernames,

passwords and given privileges. A database is a shared collection of logically related data

and a description of this data, designed to meet the information needs of an organization

Database Management System and Management Information System was a

software system that enabled users to define, create, maintain and control access to the

database. In many instances, it gave access to users at the click of a button to get the

required information without traversing into many documents. Accordingly, constraints were

all evicted like storage space, budget and time factor making information easier operated in

order to be automatically converted into printed form, which is exactly encompassed in the

new era. This gave chance to enter into the global competition. Output could be brought

forward at any desired time. Information would be retrieved at any time when needed which

was a requirement development in the changing world. The Manual system takes long to

finish a single transaction resulting into time wastage to get the required reports. It was in

adequate and did not respond to the needs of management for efficient and effective data

access. (Connolly, et al.,2011)

Management Information System as a mechanism that collected, organized and

distributed data used by management, usually being helped by use of computers in

performing their management functions. According to Daft (1991) He argued that the MIS

had certain characteristics that made it useful for managing information. These included
quality, timeliness, completeness and relevance that called for an automated system to

replace the traditional manual system.

MIS as an informal method of making information available to managers in order to

facilitate accurate, timely and right decision making for organizational purposes. If the

management information system was automated, reports would be done accurately and

timely. (Gilbert, 2012) In addition, Management Information System as a service to

management by providing managers with reports and in some cases with on-line access

(transaction) to the organization’s current performance and historical records. MIS was a key

to planning, controlling and decision making for management through transaction processing

of systems for the data. (Laudon, et al., 2010).

System

The system is capable of converting the collected data from the routine user and

machine interactions in to the effective information which later on is used by the decision

makers to make efficient decisions. In the management information system, the most

important entity is system itself which is set of defined and interrelated components which

are generally described as all of the direct or indirect complex components or elements that

are related in a casual network. Within any particular time period, all of these complex

components are related in more or less stable way with at least some other components

(Thierauf 2009). So, a well-developed and interactive system is one which provides best and

useful information to the managers at all levels. (Thierauf 2009)

Database

Databases rank among the most significant structural elements of the World Wide

Web today. Lying in the basis of the majority of the content-driven websites and applications,

databases serve a special mission - to provide a well-organized mechanism for data

manipulation. The database approach in website/application development now rules the web
by offering a quick and automated way for the information to be stored, managed, deleted or

retrieved. Databases' powerful set of capabilities has determined the introduction of dynamic

websites, which has opened a new page in the evolution history of the web.

Internet

the internet is a global wide area network that connects computer systems across

the world. It includes several high-bandwidth data lines that comprise the internet

“backbone”. These lines are connected to major internet hubs that distribute data to other

locations, such as web servers and ISPs[CHRI2017].

The developers used the internet to gather information on how the system can be

develop and designed according to what the clients need by the the use of the internet, the

delopers download some tutorials and free web template that can help in developing the

system.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is computer application software used to edit and manipulate

digital images. Photoshop was developed in 1987 by the American brothers Thomas and

John Knoll, who sold the distribution license to Adobe Systems Incorporated in 1988. It is

used to digitally alter digital photographs or other graphics.

Cross-Platform, Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl (XAMPP)

XAMPP is a bundle of Apache, MySQL, PHP, FileZilla and many other utilities.

XAMPP is the ‘easiest’ way to test an AMP (Apache-MySQL-PHP) application (Rupesh,

2015).
PHP: Hypertext preprocessor (PHP)

According to Tatroe (2006), PHP is a simple yet a powerful language designed for

creating HTML content. It was originally designed to create dynamic web content and it is

still best suited for that task. To generate HTML, the user needs the PHP parser and a web

server to send the documents. PHP has also become popular for generating XML

documents, graphics, flash animations, PDF files and more. PHP can script from the

command line, much like Pearl, Awk, or the Unix shell. The user might use the command-

line scripts for system administrations tasks, such as back-up and log parsing. Using PHP-

GTK, the user can write full blown, cross-platform GUI application in PHP. PHP runs all

major operating systems, from Unix variants including Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris to

Windows and Mac OS X. It can be used with all leading web servers, including Apache,

Microsoft IIS and the Netscape/iPlanet servers.

Microsoft Word

A full-featured word processing program for Windows and Mac from Microsoft.

Available stand-alone or as part of the Microsoft Office suite, Word contains rudimentary

desktop publishing capabilities and is the most widely used word processing program on the

market. Word files are commonly used as the format for sending text documents via e-mail

because almost every user with a computer can read a Word document by using the Word

application, a Word viewer or a word processor that imports the Word format

In the 1980s, Microsoft introduced Word for several platforms, including XENIX,

DOS, Mac, Atari, OS/2 and eventually Windows. See Microsoft Office, doc file and Office

Open XML.

My structured Query Language (MySQL)

According to (Dubois et al., 2009), My SQL is an SQL client/server relational

database management system originating from Scandinavia. MySQL includes an SQL

server, client programs for accessing the server, administrative tools, and a programming

interface for writing programs,. Initially, MySQL became widely popular because of its speed

and simplicity. But there was criticism, too, because it lacked features such as transaction

and foreign key support. MySQL continued to develop, adding not only those features but

others such as replications, subqueries, stored procedures, views and triggers. These

capabilities take MySQL into the realm of enterprise applications. As a result, people who

once would have considered only “big iron” database system for their application now give

serious consideration to MySQL.

Sublime

Sublime Text is a proprietary cross-platform source code editor with a Python

application programming interface (API). It natively supports many programming languages

and markup languages, and functions can be added by users with plugins, typically

community-built and maintained under free-software licenses.

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)

Html (Hypertext Markup Language) is asset of special instructions called tags or

markup that specify links to other documents, as well as how the page is

displayed[DENI2000]

The developers used HTML to develop structured documents by demoting structural

semantics for text as well as for links, quotes and other items. Since, web browsers only

read HTML tags, so the developers used this language to design the interface of the om-line

system and layout its elements.

Entity-Relationship diagram

An entity relationship model, also called an entity-relationship (ER) diagram, is a

graphical representation of entities and their relationships to each other, typically used in

computing in regard to the organization of data within databases or information systems. An

entity is a piece of data-an object or concept about which data is stored (Vangie Beal 2008)

Fishbone Diagram

It is also called Cause and Effect Analysis, Ishikawa Diagrams, Herringbone

Diagrams, and Ishikawa Diagrams. When you have a serious problem, it's important to

explore all of the things that could cause it, before you start to think about a solution.

That way you can solve the problem completely, first time round, rather than just

addressing part of it and having the problem run on and on. It gives you a useful way of

doing this diagram-based technique, which combines Brainstorming with a type of Mind

Map, pushes you to consider all possible causes of a problem, rather than just the ones that

are most obvious. Although it was originally developed as a quality control tool, you can use

the technique just as well in other ways. For instance, you can use it to discover the root

cause of a problem, uncover bottlenecks in your processes and identify where and why a

process isn't working (Ruth Hill, 2015).

Gantt chart

A Gantt chart aids in scheduling, managing, and monitoring specific tasks and

resources in a project. The chart shows the project timeline that includes scheduled and
completed work over a period. The Gantt chart aids project managers in communicating

project status or plans and helps ensure the project remains on track.

Use Case Diagram

A use case diagram is a software and system engineering term that describes how a

user uses a system to accomplish a particular goal. A use case acts as a software modeling

technique that defines the features to be implemented and the resolution of any errors that

may be encountered. Use cases are modeled using unified modeling language and are

represented by ovals containing the names of the use case. Actors represented using lines

with the name of the actor written below the line. To represent an actor’s participation in a

system, a line is drawn between the actor and the use case. Boxes around the use case

represent the system boundary (Janssen, 2010).

Fast Food Automated Ordering System

Mark Austin and John Baras This is self-service fast food restaurant will be equipped

with a user-friendly touch screen, a credit/debit card reader, and software for completing the

process at the backend. For this system there will be a system administrator who will have

the rights to enter the menu with their current prevailing prices. He/she can enter anytime in

the system by a secured system password to change the menu contents by adding or

deleting an item or changing its price.

Now when the customer enters the restaurant, he will place his order with the help

of the touch screen using the intuitive graphical user interface, right from the selection of

language till the payment conformation. He will select from the food options according to his

choice and the system will display the payment amount he has to make once he has finished

with his order. He will have the option of paying the bill by cash, debit card or a credit card.

The user will slide his card and the system will check for the validity of the card and the
payment will be made. A receipt will be printed containing the order number and the order

will be sent in the kitchen for processing.

Innovation within Fast Food Restaurants

Henrik antonsson, The effect of the innovation process has a positive relationship

with the amount of power distributed to the local management. However, these areas differ

depending in the organizational structure, with franchises achieving their highest amount of

power within medium sized innovations and managers in company-owned outlets maintain

their highest amount of power within minor innovations. Even though the overall

communication was perceived as satisfying and efficient, large opportunities for

improvements occur. By implementing more horizontal communication within the local

management, it is in the belief of the authors that the entire internal communication will

benefit. Especially this would benefit the franchise system where an increased local

communication and collaboration would lead to more efficient communication throughout the

entire organization.

Online Fast Food Restaurant Ordering System

According to the study conducted by Gan Chin Chuan (2002). The purpose of the

project is to develop an online fast food restaurant ordering system. It is the system that

enable customer of fast food restaurant to place their order online at any time and any place.

The reason to develop the system is due to the issues facing by the fast food restaurant

industry. As we enter the second millennium we experience one of the most important

changes in our lives that is the move to an internet based society. Electronic commerce

describe the manner in which transaction take place networks mostly internet.

On Online Ordering System

According to the study conducted by KAPCHNAGA ROGERS WAFULA (2011). An

online marketing is both creative and technical advantageous aspects in the world of the

internet. Including the design, advertising, sales and development. It is now being use by

many companies which competiting in the world of business. Internet marketing makes a big

contribution in terms of advertising and producing more sales. Providing services and

promoting products are one of the main goals of internet marketing. As the technology keep

changing and many companies are still adapting techniques to produce much revenue.

Internet marketing technologies can broaden the scope of business both on local and global

competencies.

MC Donald’s PH

Automation is hardly new to retail. Bank rely on the ATMs, and grocery stores,

including Walmart, have deployed self-service checkouts. But McDonald’s hasn’t changed its

basic system of taking orders since its founding in the 1950s, said Darren Tristano,

executive vice president of Technomic, a research group focused on the restaurant industry.

To move to kiosk and mobile ordering, said Tristano, is happening because it will

improve order accuracy, speed up service and has the potential of reducing labor cost,

which can account for about 30% of costs. But automated self-service is a convenience

that’s how expected, particularly among younger customers, he said security cloud date. “It’s

keeping up with times, and the (McDonald’s) franchises are going to clamor for it,” said

Tristano, who said any labor savongs is actually at the bottom of the list of reasongs

restaurant are putting in theses self-service systems.

McDonald’s is already deploying mobile ordering in other coutries in. In France, you

can order a McDonald’s hamburger from a mobile device, tablet or desktop and pick it up

later in the restaurant, said Thomas Husson, a forester analyst in a report.

Online Ordering System

(Kapchnaga, R, 2014). In our generation era, computer has become a key

component to our daily life because of the advancement technology of World Wide Web that

becomes an internet that allow each and every user connected with theirs’ computer for

information sharing throughout the whole world. The World Wide Web did a great

contribution to a lot of enterprise which use this mechanism for information sharing within the

enterprise and also outside the enterprise. The benefit of World Wide Web, a lot of fast food

industry applies a system known as Online Ordering System to assist their business

processes. Online Ordering System is a technique that allow customer to order their

favourite food online via the internet by using a web browser that installed in their respective

computer or smart phone. Implementing this system can help fast food industry to solve the

problem that they face while using the traditional food ordering processes. The system

greatly simplifies the food ordering process for both customer and restaurant compare to the

past. The customer can place an order everywhere and anywhere whenever internet

connection is available for them. Customers access to the website and choose the food that

they prefer from the online menu display then customers have to choose whether the food is

delivered to them or it will be packaged for pick up and the payment method will be upon

delivered or pick up and lastly it will show all the order details to the customer for double

checking and confirmation. On the other hand, the system also greatly lightens the work load

on the restaurant’s end. Once customers have place an order via the internet, the data will

send to the restaurant database and place in a queue in real-time. In addition, the data will

be display on the computer screen along with the corresponding option. It allow restaurant

employee easily manage the orders sequentially, produce the necessary item with a minimal

delay and help reduce human error.

Online Food Order System for Restaurants

Mayurkumar Patel (December, 2015) Online food order system is a website designed

primarily for use in the food delivery industry. This system will allow hotels and restaurants to

increase scope of business by reducing the labor cost involved. The system also allows to

quickly and easily manage an online menu which customers can browse and orders with just

few clicks. Restaurant employees use to place then use these orders through an easy to

navigate graphical interface for efficient processing.

For placing any orders customers have to visit hotels or restaurant to know about

food items and then place order and pay. In this method time and manual work is required.

While placing an order over the phone, customer lacks the physical copy of the

menu item. Lack of visual confirmation that the order was placed correctly.

Every restaurant needs certain employees to take the order over phone or in-person,

to offer a rich dining experience and process the payment in today’s market, labor rates are

increasing day by day making it difficult to find employees when needed.

Automated Food Ordering System

According to the study conducted by Shweta Shashikant Tanpure Priyanka R.

Shidankar and Madhura M. Joshi (2013). This research works aims to autonate the food

ordering process in restaurant and also improve the dining experience of customers. In this

papers we discuss about the design and implementation of automated food ordering system

with the realtime customer feedback (AOS-RTF) for restaurants. The advancement in

information and communication technology (ITC) has greatly influenced the business

transaction. The adaption of wireless technology and emergence of mobile devices has led

to automation in the hospitality industry such as restaurant can improved with the

combination of wireless and mobile technologies. The competition in restaurant business

have increased with the advancement in food ordering techniques.

METHODOLOGY
The methodology is the most important part of the proposal. A detailed methodology

is required for all proposed studies. It should include both the materials and method to be

used in developing the study.

Materials

The following were the specification of the computer that the researchers will use in

developing the system.

The hardware will be use are: HP Laptop with the specifications of HP 15-BS542TU

(2EY84PA) Laptop (Core i3 6th Gen/4 GB/1 TB/DOS) laptop has a 15.6 Inches (39.62 cm)

display for your daily needs. This laptop is powered by Intel Core i3-6006U (6th Gen)

processor, coupled with 4 GB of RAM and has 1 TB HDD storage. We use this laptop for

creating documents, to compile our documents and to save and edit documents about our

study.

Flashdrive is one of the most important material in our study. Also it uses as a back-

up storage for documents and the system we need for our study.

Internet helped us a lot for our research paper. We searched to get example to have

an idea because sometimes we don’t know what to do.

Methods

The researchers will need to conduct interview to the staff of the restaurant so we

can know how we implement properly our study to them.

Questionares is important also, it help us to know what is important to their restaurant

by answering questions and to suggest some ideas.

Spiral Methodology
Spiral modes is a combination of iterative development process model and sequential

linear development model. It allows for incremental releases of the product, or incremental

refinement through each iteration around the spiral.

Figure 2. SDLC - Spiral Model (Gurendo, 2015)

Process 1: Identification Phase

The identification phase starts with gathering the business requirements in the baseline

spiral. In the subsequent spirals as the product matures, identification of the system

requirements, subsystem requirements and unit requirements are all done in this game.

This also includes understanding the system requirements by continuous

communication between the customers and restaurant staff. The researchers will try to

gather the product objectives, requirements, and alternatives in design.

Process 2: Design Phase

Design phase starts with the conceptual design in the baseline spiral and involves

architectural design, logical design of modules, physical product design and finals design in

the subsequent spirals. In this phase the researchers were allowed to design and construct

the assigned module according to their responsiveness and assigned functionality and parts

of each module.

Process 3: Construct or build Phase

Construct phase refers to production of the actual software product in every spiral. In the

subsequent spirals with higher clarity on requirements and design details a working model of

the software called build is produced with a version number. These builds are sent to a

customer for feedback. At the end of this phase, the researchers will develop a software.

Process 4: Evaluation and Risk Analysis Phase

Risk Analysis includes identifying, estimating, testing, and monitoring technical feasibility

and management risks, such as schedule slippage and cost overrun. After testing the build,

at the end of the iteration, the customer evaluates the software and provides feedback. One

on the primary tasks for the researchers was the enumeration of all the possible risks and

prioritizes them according to the importance. The next step is to determine the strategies

that can help to analyze and overcome the possible risks. Evaluation of these parameters

can cause changes at the next steps.
