SECTION 6. ROAD FURNITURE

6.1 COR,RUGATED SHEET STEEL BEAM HIG}NYAY GUAN.DNNL

6.1.1 Description

This work shall comprise thc supply and installation ofcorrugatcd shccl stecl
beam highwav qsxl{reils inclusive of bolts. truts. Dosts ard othcr rncillarv
worxs, all. in accordance with this Speotrcatron, aac uc urawrngs, rnc Nlt
directcd by the S.O.

6.r.2 Materials

6.1.2.1 Beam Element

Unless otherwise spccified on thc Drawingg corrugated sheet stecl beam


highway guardrails shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO
Spccification Ml80 for Class A'Type lI (galvaniscd) pardrail with clfectivc
lcngth of bcam 3{ll0 mm (l2leet6 inches). Guardrails shall bc fabricatcd and
furnishcd complete with ter4inal or buffcr sectionq connccting and splicing
bolts, nuts and washcrs, etc., all conforming to thc rcquiremcnts of AASIITO
Specilication M180 and ns necessary for crecting the guardrails as shorvn on
the Drawings or as requircd by the S.O.

6.r.2.2 &sts
(a) Steel Posts

Srcel posts shall bc channcl scctions of dimcnsions as shown on thc Drawings


and thc matcrial shall conform to B.S. zl49 Parr I Grade 43. The block-out
pieces, if use4 shall be channel sections of dimcnsionp as shorn on thc
Drawings and shall be of thc samc matcrial as that uscd for the posts. Both
the posts and block-out pieces shall be hot-dip gahaniscd in accordance with
Sub-Scction 6.1.2.1.

(b) Tinbcr Posts

Timber posts and block-out picccs shall bc of medium hardrvood (cxcept the
spccics Merpauh and Rcngas) as classilied by thc Malaysian Timbcr lndustry
Board in its publication 'Malaysian Hardwood', and shall be treatcd according
to M.S. 733. Thc preservativc rctcntion in the oulermtxt aJ mm shall not be
lcss lhan 16 kg per cubic metrc, Heavy hardwood can also bc uscd as an
altcrnativc with thc approval of thc S.O.

Guardrail timbcr posts and block-out pieies shall be of the dimcnsions as


shown on thc Drawings. Thc fibres of thc block should run in thc samc
dircction as lhosc of the post. The post shall be sound and frcc from loosc
knots or dccay with no crackr at the top. All cut faces shall be smooth ard
squarc as shown on thc Drawings.

6.1.3 Inslallalion of (iuardrails

6.1.3.1 Sctting Posts (Timber or Slcel)

Bcfore posts arc crcctcd, thc alignmcnt and finishcd lcvels of the guardrails
shall be sct accurately on site for approval by the S.O.

Post lroles al thc correct posrtrons sha|| De dug ertner manuauy or mccnanrcaly
to thc rcquired lcvcl. Thc posts shall $en be set plumb in the holes with the
front face forming a smooth linc to. the approval of the S.O. After the pocts
are in place, thc holes shall bc backfilled with gtade N/20 concrete
compactcd in such a manner as not to displace the posts from correct
alignmcnt as sfrornr on the Drawir*s. Posts may be installed by means of
driving with sriitirble cquipment if the S.O. is satisfied that the Contractor is
capablc of installing the post to the designed dcpth, linc and lcvel, acctrately.

Posts shall bc spaced as indicated on lhe Drawings.

6.1.3.2 Placing Beams

Thc guardrail hcams shall bc fixed and firmly bohed together with the block-
out picccs on lo thc fnst to the lines and gradcs as sliown on the Drawings,
and as dircctr:d hy the S.O.

6.1.3.3 Anchoragcs

Anchoragcs shalt bc constructcd as shown on the Drawings and as directed by


the S.O.

(t.l.4 Marking and Storage

6.t.4,1. Marking

In addition to thc marking specified in AASHTO Specilication M180, the JKR


lcrgo shall also be marked on each beam elcment.

(r.1,4.2 Storagc

All gatvanised bcam elcmcnts, lcrminal soctions,.bolts, nuts and washers and
posts shall be storcd undcr a cover that will protect them from rain until they
arc erccted or used. Whilc in storagc, the malerial shall not bc in direu
contact with the soil and there shall bc a minimum space of 300 mm bctween
the lowest most clements and thc ground surface.
(ril.5 Basis of Acccnlance

(r. t.5.1 Beam Elcmenls

All material shall bc suhjcctcd to inspcction and sampling in accordance with


AASHTO Specification Ml80 at a sampling rate of 1 in cvery 200 or as
dircctcd by thc S.O.

Thc C'ontraclor shall providc and arrangc the tcsting facilities and the test
picccs as and whcn rcqucstcd by thc S.O. Ths cost.of all sampling and tcsting
shall bc bornc hy thc Contractor. If, in the subscqucnt installation, there is
dctcction of non-compliancc with thc requircmcnts of this Spccilication
through random sampling carricd out by thc S.O., thcn thc rnatcrial of the

lot will be rejcctcd and thc Conlractor shall removc the samc from the Site
at his own cost.

6.1.5.2 Posts and Block-Outs

(a) Stecl

For eacn tot ol z,l, prccas or tes6 ot erttrer steet posts or $ept Dbcr-outs
supplied to the Sitc, the Contractor shall submit certifigatcs from an approved
tcsting laboratory certfins compliancc rdth the propcrtics rcquircd and thc
rnill cortificate. However, the S.O. rescrves the rigbt to conduct further tests
on thc materials supplicd.

The Contractor. shall provide and arrangc thc testing facilitie.r and test
samples at his own exp€nsc as and when instructcd by thc S,O. Thc steel which
has bcen rejected by thc S.O. shall bc removed from the Sitc.

(b)

For each tot of 200 picces or lcss of either timb€r posts or timber blocft-
outs supplied to the Site, the Contractor shall submit a test rcport from an
approvcd testing laboratory certirying compliancc with specified timbcr spccics
and othcr qualitics. Howerrer, the S.O, reserves thc right to conduct further
tests on thc materials supplied.

6.2 TRAFFIC SIGNS

6.2.1 Dcscrigtir>n

This work shall consist of thc supply, assembln erection and instaltation of
sign faccs, sign plales, posts and backing frames, all in accordance with the
details shown on the Drawings and as specified herein. It shall include all
excavation and backlilling all necessary foundations, anchorages, fixtures and
fastenings, brackcts, lighting units and electrical installations where required,
application of paints and finishes, €1c., to complete thc work all to the
satisfaction of thc S.O.
6.2.2 Sign Dcfrnitions

For the purposc of this Specification, traffic signs are-rlcfined as follows :-

i) Non.illuminatcd signs are those signs which are not lit either internally
or cxlcrnallyan<J shall be rctro-reflcctive;

ii) Errcrnally illuminated signs are those which comprise either rctro-
refleclive or non-retro-reflective facingwit[renernal lightingluminaire.

6.2.3 Siqn Classification

For thc purposc of this Specification, thc following clasifications shall apply :-

(a) Pednarrent Tralfc Sigts


Any of the traffic signs defined in Sub-section 6.2.2 aborre or any part
tbcreof as designated on the Drawings or as directed by the S.O. to
lemain in position upon comptetion of thc Works.

(b) Tenrporory TntSc Signs

Any of-the traffic signs defined in Sub.section 6.2.2 abwe or any part
thcreof desigrcd by the Contractor with rhe approval of the S.O. which
will not rcmain in position at the completion of the Works.

6.2.4 Standards

All traffic signs shall, exccpt where spccificd othcrwise, comply with the
rcquiremcnts of ARAH,AN TEKNIK (JAL{N) Series } published by
Cawangan Jalan, lbu Pejabat JKR, Kuala Lumpur.

6.2.5 Pcrmancnt Traffic SigN

6.2.5.1 Gcncral Rcquircments

Perrnancnt traffic signs shall be constructed, assemblcd, located and erected


as shown on thc Drawings or as dirccted by the S.O.

Each complctc-traffic sign or part lhcreof shall be capable of passing the tests
spccilicd in B.S. 87.i.

All externally illuminated tralfic signs shall comply with Category I luminance
of B.S, 8?3 unless otherwisc shorvn on tbe Drawings.

Before the commencemeot of fabrication of any traflic sign, unless otherwisc


shown on the Drawings, the Contractor sball submit for the S.O.'s approval
tbe details of fabrication &awings for all sigrrs.

housings shall be provided with vandal and weather resistant
locks. Kep, in the quantities determined by the S.O., shall bc provided to the
S.O. Types of lock shall be kcpt to a minimum.

Traffic sigps shall be carefutty handled to prevent damage (mcthods shall


include the usc of proper slings), and shall be ttansported and siored in
accordande *ith the manufacturcr'g instructions.

6.2.5.2 Foundations

The type and size of foundations for permanent traflic signs shall be as shown
on the Drawings and, unless otherwise stated_therein, shall comply with this
Specification.

All excavations, ereclion of fonnworks, placing of reinforcement, ctc., for


foundations shall be carried out in compliancc with this Specilication and shall
be approved by the S.O. before placing of concrete and bactfilling

Unless otherwisc shown on the Drawings, signs supported by a single post


placed in the ground shall have the post installed centrally itr 3{I) mm diameter
hofes filled with grade ?n/A crlrnctete complying with Secrion 9 of this
Specification to riithin 450 mm of the ground surface. The hole shall be
excavated either mechanically or manually.

Posts shall be supported for a minimum of three (3) days aftcr placing lhe
concrete, Backfilling shatl not take place until'at least 48 hours aftcr placing
the concrete, or other period agreed by the S,O.

Where sigrs are illuminated, provision shall be made for cable entry through
the foundation by means of ducting as shown on the Drawings.

Where pockets are formed in concrete foundations their plan dimensions shall
be 100 mm larger than thosc of the post.
All backfilling of foundation pits and reinstaterirent of edsting surfaccs abovc
the foundations shall comply with the relevant requiremenls of this
Specilication.

6.2.5.3 &sts
Posts for perrnanent traffic sigrs shall be as shown on the Drawings and shaU
comply with B.S. 873.

Posts shall be of tubular hollow section steel o[ not less than 50 mm outslde
diameter complying with B.S. f387.

Unless otherwise shown on the Drawingg posts sball not protrudc abow thc
top of the sign unless supporting an external luminaire where the Protrusion
shall bc kept to a minimum.'

Signs erected on a single post shall be poaitioncd so that thc post is in thc
centre of the s!fiq unlans otherwisc showu on tbe Drawings.

Compartments for electrical cquipncnt shall bc as showtr on thc Drawings.


In the casc of signs supported by more than onc post, such compartrncnts
shall be on lhe po6t furthest from thc carriagcway unlcss othcrcdsc dircctcd
by the S.O

Flangc plates shall havc holes or slots as sho*l on thc Drawings to


accommodats any holding down bolts.

6.2.5.4 Sign Plates

All permanent sign platcs slrall be rs shon'n on thc Drawings and shall comply
with B.S. 873. Sign plates shall bc made of 10 S.W.G. shcets of aluminiun
alloy HS 30-WP conforming to B.S. 14il witb a minimum thickness of 3 mm.

A sigr plate not excecding 1.2 m in height and 2.4 m in widrh shall be made
from a single sheet.

Where more than one sbeet is used to make up a sign plate, the sheets shall
bc rectangular, of approxirnatcly the same size and shapc, and thc position of
the joints shall be ro thc appro l of the S.O.

Sign plates shall be drilled at all locations where rivets or bolts are rcquired
for attaching thc plate to the bacting framc or fixings before application of the
sign facc. Howevet, rirtting shall bc carricd out only after thc application of
the sigrr face.

Subjcct to the S.O.'s approvat, doubtc sided'Very High Bond' (V.H.B.) tapes
may be use d as an alternative to rivets, Noverthclesg the tapc shall comply with
the following rcquirements :-

i) Peel Adhesion - m N per 100 mm;

ii) Tensile Adhesion - 910 kPa;

iii) Dynamic Shear 550 kPa.

Where top and bottom light spill scre€ns are rcquired as shown on. tbc
Drawings. these shall erc.end for the whole width of the sign, bc fabricated out
of the same material as thc sign platc and shall have corners ott to thc same
radius as the other corners of thc sigt platc.

Top and bottom light spill screens shall be considered part of thc sign plate
and any stiffcners and mounting fittings shall be desigrred to accommodate thc
combined size.

6.2.5.5 Siqn Faces

Sign faccs for permanent uaffic signs shall bc as sho*n on the Drawings and
shall comply with tbe 'Draft Malaysiao Standard Specitication for Rcflcctive
Slp Facc Materials' (SIRIM Referencc D111 [ISCFI), and on rcplacement
of this draft, thc respcctivc Matapian Staodard Specificatiou

backing frames shall be made from aluminium alloy HE9-TE conforming to


B.S. 1474.

The angles shall bc welded, bolted or rivcted together to form thc backing
frames as shown on the Drawings.

Backing fiames shall not project beyond the face of the sign.

Where large sinns are built in sectiong the backing frames of these sections
shall be bolted togcther witb 8 m diameter bolts at not more than 2IX) mm
centr€s.

The details ofjoints benvecn angles of the backing frame and ofjoints between
sections of largc signs shall be to the approvd of the S.O.

The sign plate shall be riveted or bonded with double sided V.H.B. tape to
the backing frame after the application of the sign face.

6.2.5.7 Construction and Assembly

Traffic signs shalt be constructed and assembled as shorryn on the Drawings and
shall comply with B.S. 873.

All sigr plates, backing frames, purlins' posts and other comPonents shall bc
de-burred prior to assembly.

Wbere framing and sti{fening are Dot an integral part of the sigp plate, their
joints shall be welded or joined with suitable brackets utitising nuts, bolts and
washers.

Where purlins are adopted, they shall be attached to each vertical member of
tbe backing frame and the sign sliffening and framing shall be continuous in
thc vcrticai direction. Unless otherwise permitted by the S.O., purlins shall
be spaccd equally apart. Connections shall be made at every point where a
purlin crosses a post,

Where purlins are not adopted, the sigr stiffening and framing shall bc
continuous in the horizontal direction.

Alt rivets and other devices used in the fixing of sign plates to their stiffeners
or backing frames, or those uscd in the construction of housingg shall be of
a material compatible with thc materials being joined.

Spacing of rivets or other devices used in the fuing of sign plates to their
stiffeners or backing frames shall bc uniform and shall not exceed 150 mm
around the outside edge of any sheet or section of a shecq and shall not exceed
300 mm on cross braces. Hollow rivets shall be lillcd with a plastic plug flush
with the head of thc rivet.

An additional washer of neoprene, nylon or other material approved by the


S.O. shall bc used against the sign face to protect it from the effects of any
metal nutg bolts, washers and/or soews.

Where traffic signs, including external lighting luminaires or their suPporls, ate
required to havc holding down bolt fuing, the bolts shall be lightly greased
before final installation and they and their anchorages shall be installed so as

ROAD MARKINGS

6.3.r Descriotion

This work shall consist of the supply of road marking material and its
application tg form cottinuous or intermittent lines, letteig arrowg syrnbols
or figures. The markings shall bc white or yellow laid to the dimensions and
at the locations shown on tbe Drawings and as specified berein or as directed
by the S.O. The work includes the supply of .alt labour, tootq equipment,
m-aterials, and *arning and trallic guidance signs as necessary for thd sifc and
efficient completion of the entire work.

6.3.2 Road Markinp.Materials

The marking material shall be one of the tlpes detailed below as indicated on
the Drawings or as directed by the S.O.

(a) Thermoplastic Moteria!

Thermoplastic matcrial shall comply with the requirements of B.S. 3262


Part I, Yellow thermoplastic matcrial shall be of standard colour BS. 381C
No. 356 (Golden Ycllow).

(b) Road Ma*ing Point

Road marking paint shall comply with the requirements of M.S. 164. yellow
-No.
paint shaltbe of standard colour B.S. 381C 356 (Golden yellow).

6.3.3 Preparation of Site

Thermoplastic material and road marking paint shall be applied only on a


surface which is clean and dry. It shatl not bc taid over toose dctritus, mud or
extraneous matler or over old material or paint marking incompatible with the
paint being applied.

A tacl coat compatible with the marking material shall be applied in


accordance with manufacturer's instructions prior to the application of
thermoplastic material.

If a primer or undercoat is necessary to ensure proper adhesion of the marking


paint to the road surface without bleeding or bthir discoloration, the primei
or underco-at shall be fully compatible with the marking paint and the road
surface. The rate of application of tack coat, primer or indercoat shall be in
accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and to the satisfaction of the
s.o.
6.3.4 Preparation of Material on Site

6.4 CONCRETE KER,B

6.4.1 Descrigtion

This work shall consist of the supply and installation of cast in situ or prccast
concrete kcrbs conslrulted at the locations and in accordancc with thc lincs,
lcve ls, grades, dimensions and tlpcs as shown on the Drawingg all in
accordance with this Spccification.

6.1.2 Miterials

Concretc for herb sections shall be grade 25/8 concroto unless othenrise
indicated on the Drawings and shall conform to thc rcquirements of
Section 9 of this Specification.

Unlcss othcrwise shown on the Drawings, bedding shall be grade 10/25


concrctc.

6.4.3 Installation bf Kerbs


6.4..1. t Excavation

Excavation shall bc made to the required deptb and the basc shalt bc trimmed
and compacted to a fum and evcn surfacc. All rcft and unsuitable material
shall be removed and replaced with suitable material as dcfined in Scaion 2
of this Specification. The bcdding material shall then bc placcd and compacted
to ftrrm a bcd of required thickness as shown on the Drawings.
