E1. Food and Health

(a) This multiple choice question asks pupils to identify the best description of a
balanced diet. The correct option (‘eating foods from different food groups’) was
given by just over half the population. A significant proportion of pupils, including
almost two-thirds of the pupils assessed at level 3, chose the first option (‘eating
mostly fruit and vegetables’). This addresses the misconception that a balanced diet
consists of ‘healthy’ foods, rather than foods from a number of different food groups.

(b) This question consists of three statements on balanced diets which pupils had to
classify as either ‘true’ or ‘false’. All three had to be answered correctly to gain
credit. Pupils were most confident in identifying that the need for exercise is
unrelated to the diet of an individual to maintain health. The most common error,
made by similar numbers of pupils across the levels, indicates that they were
unaware that as a balanced diet contains all the food groups, it would help bones
grow strong (first true/false statement).
