Introduction

The Problem

Communication started out with a simple snail mail that took months before
receiving and getting a response. As time passed and society advanced and
progressed, communication had to embrace changes and establish a secure
relationship with technology just to keep up with the development. Different
gadgets were invented along with the creation of a variety of applications that
complimented our preferred style and way of communication. These
applications for communication are called Social Networks and as many as
they can be; only one dominates in the eyes of society and that is Facebook. Is
it the main way of communication in the modern era?

Social Networking sites are termed to as web based services that gives an
opportunity to an individual to create their own personal profile with the choice
of their own list of users and thereby connecting them altogether in a public
forum that provides feature such as chatting, blogging, and video/photo sharing.
Examples of these social networks would be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
Youtube all of which are being used everyday by millions of people. Facebook
as the leading social networking application has billions of users which are
either logging in or just joined the community. It was launched and founded in
2004 by Mark Zuckerberg for the purpose of communication for Harvard
students but soon expanded its territory which is now used by people all over
the world. Facebook has different features such as liking, sharing, commenting
and posting a status. Other applications were launched under it which gave
facebook an edge to other sites. As facebook became a part of our daily lives
by means of communication, people’s personal interactions are slowly being
ignored. More conversations are made on facebook , less are done in the real
world. Courting and even establishing friends are now done on
facebook .Dissemination of information and exercising our freedom of speech
can also be done on this app. Facebook is at its peak and so is our
communication.
As it reached its purpose of being a gateway for communication will it also
in exchange be the main way of communication in the modern era?

Statement of the Problem

This study focuses on facebook as the main way of communication in the

modern era. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the qualifications for considering a type of media to

be a main way of communication?

2. How can Facebook be a main way of communication?

3. What are the benefits of Facebook in terms of communication?

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the Facebook application as it is used as a

communication tool in the modern era. The study will contain a brief history of
facebook as well as a definition. It will also be presenting some statistical
records regarding Facebook usage by people and showing some qualifications
for being an effective tool for communication. The advantages of Facebook to
people will also be shown.

The purpose of this study is to dig deeper of how Facebook is becoming a

main way of communication. This study limits its coverage to online and
published researches found on the internet.

Significance of the Study

The result of this study would give benefit to the following:

To the students, this will help you learn about facebook as a means of
communication.

To the teachers, this will guide you in teaching the students about
communication through technology and the internet.

To the parents, this will let you understand that Facebook has its
purpose in our society.
To the future researchers, this will serve as a reference for your
research paper regarding communication and facebook.

Definition of Terms

To have a better understanding of the words and terms used in this project,
the following are defined, operationally:

Social Network Site. Online websites and applications that lets user all over
the world connect and interact .

Communication. A two way connection between a receiver and the

messenger.

Facebook. An online application that users may use as a tool for

communication, dissemination of information and entertainment.

Applications. Online programs that were created for different purposes and
can be found on both computers and mobile devices.

Review of Related Literature

This chapter presents the literature regarding Facebook as a

communication, discuss the qualifications of how a type of media can be
considered a main way of communication and the benefits of Facebook .

Communication is often mentioned for its role in creating change and

has been used since the beginning to disseminate information, apply
knowledge and skill, manipulate views and beliefs, and develop
connections and relationships among people (Rogers, 2003; King, 2003).
Communication through online communities and social media websites has
sparked one of the most significant social developments, society is yet to
discover (Experian Marketing Services, 2010). Social media sites are
Internet- and mobile-based tools for sharing information, interacting, and
building relationships among individuals. Forms of social media include
blogging, podcasting, video blogging, and other various social networks.
Each of these is designed to give people a way to reach out and connect
with others (Brogan ,2010) People like to be on social media to feel like
they are being heard and that their thoughts and feelings are respected.
Some social media and networking websites are broad and attract diverse
audiences while others focus specifically on certain hobbies and interests.
Sites also vary in the communication tools they offer to users including
mobile connectivity, blogging, and photo/video sharing (Boyd & Ellison,
2007). Facebook is one of the most popular and universal social media
and networking sites (Kabani, 2010).

Mark Zuckerberg gave birth to Facebook in early 2004. At that time

Zuckerberg (2004) was a sophomore at Harvard University. The name for
Face book came from the publications that some colleges pass out to
students at the beginning of the year . Facebook was created by Mark
Zuckerberg and other Harvard students to remain networked through the
Internet. Face book became so popular, in a short space of time, and was
soon accessed by other colleges. Over time, they have addedmany new
features to their website. There are news feeds, more privacy features,
Face book notes, the ability to add images to one’s blog and comments,
importing other blogs into Face book, instant messaging, and much more.
Another feature that differentiates Facebook from other social sites is the
ability for outside developers to build "Applications" which allow users to
personalize their profiles and perform other tasks, such as comparing movie
preferences and chart travel histories. The use of social networking sites
has afforded users with a free market place of ideas where people can
communicate freely without regulation.

In 2010, Facebook active user numbers increased to more than 500

million. Users spend an average of 20 minutes a day engaging in the site and at
least half of the entire Facebook population logs in once a day (Kabani, 2010).

Facebook can be divided into four main parts: profiles, groups, pages, and
events. Profiles are how people represent themselves to others. Users make
their profile pages unique to their own style, interests, and creativity. Groups
are created by users and allow them to take part in smaller communities within
Facebook that support certain interests or beliefs that are shared by others.
Once individuals engage in groups and become active members, they have the
ability to receive information that may not be available to them in any other form.
Facebook groups also give these individuals the chance to participate in other
activities and come across opportunities they otherwise may not have had
(Park, Kee, & Valenzuela, 2009).

With more than two-thirds of online adults using Facebook, according to

the Pew Research Center, and a Facebook sign in or "Like" button at every turn,
Facebook has become ubiquitous. Its pervasiveness makes it one of the
easiest tools to use for communication with old and new friends.

You can find so many ways to communicate on Facebook, each one

tailored to a different type of person's preferences. On your profile, you can post
messages, selecting an audience of the public, only your friends and even only
yourself. If you want a more private conversation, you can send a direct
message to a particular friend and start up a chat in that way. If you want to
meet new people with similar interests, you can seek them out in Facebook
groups or Facebook pages. Whatever your social comfort level, you can find a
place to communicate with others on the social network.

Closing the Distance

When friends and family members move across the country or to a different
one, Facebook can help you stay in touch when you otherwise would not. Time
differences can make phone calls difficult to arrange, but Facebook can help
you remain in their lives. In addition to communicating directly through posting
and messaging, you can play games with them, making them seem closer no
matter the distance. If you find that few people around you have similar
interests, you can also use Facebook to connect with others around the country
and world who do.

Eliminating Barriers

For those with crippling social anxiety, Facebook can help reduce or
eliminate the barriers to meeting new people. If, for example, you feel nervous
about approaching someone in class about a homework assignment, you may
feel more comfortable friending or messaging that person on Facebook. That
way, you can think over what you write and can avoid any potential
embarrassment present in the first face-to-face meeting. Getting through that
initial introduction on Facebook can then help you feel more comfortable the
next time you meet that person face-to-face. A number of studies back this up,
including "The Influence of Shyness on the Use of Facebook in an
Undergraduate Sample," which found that shy people spend more time on
Facebook than more socially adept people.

Ease of Use

Facebook's layout encourages personal sharing, commenting and other forms

of communication. When you sign on to the site, the homepage fills with stories
about others. You can easily comment on the stories and click through to that
person's profile -- all without any technical knowledge of the Internet. Facebook
is not limited to young people, either. The Pew Research Center found that in
2012, 73 percent of Internet users ages 30 to 49 have a Facebook account and
57 percent of users 50 to 64 have a Facebook account. Even for the group of
users over 65, 35 percent have a Facebook account, the largest percentage of
any social network for this group of people. Partially because of its ease of use
and ubiquity, just about anyone can have and maintain an account, increasing
the opportunities for communicating with others on the social network.

According to the research carried out Facebook population is made up of

Millions of people around the globe. As compared to males, females lead the
population on Facebook; young adults aged 18 to 25, possess the most
population of the Facebook due to their interests in chatting, entertainment,
cyber dating and other youth stuff. After this age sector Facebook is heavily
populated from people aged 26 to 34, due to the same interests as of young
adults. The rest of the population is covered by people of different ages
including children and people over 45. Coming to the regional statics of
Facebook usage, Facebook is a lawful activity in every country of the world.
America has the most Facebook users of the world, Brazil has the second most
users of Facebook in the World and third country with most Facebook users is
India. Ireland possesses 59th position in relevance to the Facebook population.
All these statistics show that Facebook is huge and on the present day it is the
most popular social network and one of the most visited website on internet.

Methodology

In this chapter, we will be seeing the methods of research to be used during the
course of the study. It will discuss the research design, research locale, research
respondents ,research instruments, data gathering and statistical treatments to be used.

Research Design

The evaluative-correlation method will be used in this study. The purpose is to

determine if Facebook is being used by students and teachers as an application for
communication.

The research design framework of this study will be illustrated which is the
statistical record of Facebook being used as a communication. This will help us see the
time being spent by students and teachers on using facebook compared to different
applications.

The process in this study will be through the use of questionnaires to determine if
facebook has the upper hand to other applications. Meta analysis pertains to the
comparison of different research papers result regarding facebook and communication
with our paper. This study will be presented through powerpoint presentation. It will be
including everything in this paper but some will be summarized for better
understanding.

This study aims to see facebook as the main way of communication in the modern
era.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted at Systems Technology Institute (STI) of General

Santos City located at Jose Catolico Sr. Avenue.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents that will be used in this study would be students and teachers that
of STI College. Selection of respondents will be conducted through random sampling.

Research Instrument
The researchers will be using questionnaires as perceived by the respondents with
corresponding scale per item to determine if facebook will be the main way of
communication in the modern era.The questionnaires will enable the researchers to find
out if communication in this era is through facebook.

The questionnaires were adapted from online researcher’s questionnaires.

To interpret the results of the survey regarding facebook as a main way of

communication in the modern era, the following scale will be used:

Scale Description Interpretation

4 Always Facebook is being used always

3 Sometimes Facebook is being used sometimes

2 Rarely Facebook is used once or twice

1 Never Facebook is not used

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will be asking permission to acquire authorization from the school to
formally carry out the purpose. The data of the said study will be gathered through the
usage of questionnaires to identify facebook’s dominance in communication than other
applications and time consumption being used by people .

Statistical Treatment

The data will be subjected to the following statistical treatment : Frequency

Distribution and Pearson Product--Moment Correlation Coefficient.

Frequency Distribution will be used to determine the usage consumption of

facebook by the respondents.

Pearson Product--Moment Correlation Coefficient will be used to determine if our

research result has an effect to other researcher’s results regarding facebook
consumption.
