WATER PUMP .. 2

INTRODUCTION

Water is vital for the life and survival of the plants. It is essential in transportation

of nutrients and sugar from the soil to the plants. It’s always good idea to have the right

tool that will properly deliver your water to plants. Whether a hobby gardener or a

farmer, if someone’s loves working in nature, he/she is also passionate about the health of

the plants. Sprayers and mist blowers are indespensable tools when it comes to protecting

and caring for plants. They enable us to apply fertilizers and fortifiers quickly and easily.

With the use of the concept of water pump, sprayers generated in our modern

world. This concept provides optimum performances with minimum efforts. This things

applies to the agricultural sector. Science and technology helps the mankind to improve

its life. Innovative human brains use their creative power and blend it with the principle

of mathematics and physics to develop an ultimate range of plant protection equipments,

showcasing the highest degree of human excellence. The invention of this concept

brought revolution in the agriculture or horticulture sector.

OBJECTIVE

This study was conducted with the main objective of:

 Establishing a lightweight, small size, high efficiency water pump at a low cost.

 Developing innovative advances to enhance garden watering.

 Creating a handy material that performs mechanical work in moving fluids that

may be use in gardening.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study to be conducted will be beneficial to the following:

To the community. The proposed study may serve as means for the community

to save money in cultivating their land and lessen the work they spend in field,

specifically, by the farmers.

To future researchers. The study can serve as their reference or guide in

creating their own study. It can also help future researchers taking related courses to

identify the other possible materials than can be used to create tools in garden watering.

To the researchers themselves. The researchers can obtain clear understanding

and knowledge on the development of watering tools. The significance of this study is to

involve ourselves in the manner creating materials for gardening at low cost that may

enhance our skills and expertise that we may use in a wider scale.

 5 Glue Stick

 1 Nozzle Spray

 1 Glue Gun

3.2 Project Methodology

Step 1: Starting the project

To create the pump, start by obtaining the pump housing. For this, 2 gatorade

bottle caps will be used. Next is making the impeller. The bottom of the impeller will be

made out of a plastic sheet. The piece of plastic used was food packaging. A compass

was used to trace a circle slightly smaller than the pump housing onto a piece of plastic.

Then cut out the piece of plastic and color it red for a more distinct color. Once it is cut it

out, drill a hole in the center to mount it onto the motor at a later time.

Step 2: Making the Impeller Blades

Next is making the blades of the impeller. To do this, cut out a long thin piece of

plastic and cut it into 4 smaller pieces. Glue four smaller pieces onto the disk. The four

smaller pieces can then be glued onto the disk.

Step 3: Attaching the Motor

Next is drilling a hole into the bottom of the pump housing. The shaft of the

motor will need to fit through that hole, so it should be drilled larger than the diameter of

the motor shaft. Next put the glue around the face of the motor and attach it to the bottom

of the pump housing. Make sure to seal the holes on the face of the motor so water won’t

get through.

Step 4: Attaching the Impeller

After this, put glue in between all 4 blades and attach it onto the motor’s shaft.

Once the glue dries rotate the finished impeller to make sure it does not chafe against the

sides or bottom.

Step 5: Closing Off the Pump Housing

Next is sealing off the pump’s housing. For this, trace out the housing on the sheet

of plastic and cut out the plastic circle. Before attaching the plastic circle, drill a hole at

the size of a straw in the plastic circle and drill another hole at the same size for the pump

housing. This will serve as an entrance and exit for the water. Next, glue a straw onto the

entrance and exit. It is important that it is glued all the way around to avoid water

leakage. To finish it off, glue the circular piece of plastic onto the front of the pump’s

housing. The blades of the impeller should be at a height where they will not touch the

circle that is attached to the front. If the impellers have too much height, they should be

trimmed until they fit. The front of the housing should be glued so that if the straws are

sealed, the pump housing won’t be damaged. Once this is done, the pump is ready for

testing.

Step 6: Project Testing

When testing the pump, make sure to pour water in the container because it must

be filled with water to work. A larger motor or laying the pump down horizontal instead

CENTRAL LUZON STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

WATER PUMP .. 6

of vertical would increase the performance. In the next step show a different modification

made to make the pump work a bit better.

Step 7: Modifications

The design worked but it could still be possibly improved. Instead of forcing the

water to leave perpendicular to the housing, try letting it leave tangential to the housing

which is a more natural way. To do this, simply elongate the hole on the side and cut out

part of the bottom of a straw. Once it is done, glue it on and it is ready to test again.

Width = 9 inches
Length = 16 inches
