Abstract
The topics that discussed in this paper is te strategy to improve studens’
listening skill, because listening skill is the most important skill that
student must master. Ther are many activities to improve students’
listening ability, and one of them is through movie, and the media that
will be used is Iflix app. By watching movie through Iflix students can
watch so many movies that they have interested most, and then they
given by assignment that connected with the movie. By this activity
students will know about the real context of English lnguage and get new
vocabularies, know how to pronounce words correctly, know how to
using stress, and many others. And when students master in all those
things, automatically their listening skill will be better.
I. Introduction
Howatt and Dankin said that Listening is the ability to understand and
identify what others people are saying. Listening skill is playing important role in
communication, human listen to get messages from another human. When
studying a foreign language, people need to be good at listening skill it will help
them understand what other people are saying . listening skill also help people
speak clearly, help people to pronounce a word correctly, help people to use
intonation when speaking, and use word or sentence stress. As foreign language
learners, we should master our listening skill in English as our goal.
The students and teachers may get some problems in the teaching and
learning of Listening, one of them is technology. Students in 2018 are totally
different with students in 2010 or even 2015. Kaiser Family foundation (2016)
founds that students aged 8-18 spend about 6,5 hours per day using media. Today
’s students are more developed than students in the past, they are very interested
and master in digital things. They play games, socialize, study, read, in digital
ways, using their own gadget like phone, tablet, or computer. So, for today’s
students, practicing listening using the recording in the laboratory then play it
more and more is so outdated and boring.
There are many attractive ways to do in improving the Listening skill of
students. and one of them is using Iflix App or movie streaming appon android or
ios. Imroving listening through movies is an attractive and challenging ways,
since everyone in this digital era like to watch movie. When students learning
English through movie it will make the students familiar with spoken language
and make them understand more, by watching movie students are also introduced
to the real context of English and can get more vocabulary that they don’t get in
class.
Then how can Iflix improve student's listening ability? Ya, that is
something that will be discussed here. The activity that the students will do is
they'll be asked to watch English movies outside the classroom. Watching movies
is an interesting activity to improve listening skill since students nowadays like
watching movies. The media that will they use to watch the movie is Iflix, they
can access it with their gadgets. Since Iflix provides so many movies, the students
can choose which one the movie that they have interested most. The difficulties
level for each movie is different. For the beginner, they can use kids mode first,
because the movies there using easy words and easy to understand. Each genre
also has its own difficulties, for example, drama movie will use easier context
than a sci-fi movie. And for the first level, the student can watch the movie with
Bahasa subtitle, then the next level they will use English subtitle, and the last level
they will use no subtitle at all.
After watching the movie, students will be given an assignment, they need
to answer some questions based on the movie. With this strategy, students will
always get new information about how words are pronounced or how words are
sound, and when they know how words are pronounced or sounds, they must
familiar with words or pronunciation, then they can recognize spoken words.
Wills in 2006 said that listening process need to understand the speaker
pronunciation and accents, the speaker’s vocabularies and grammar and the
understanding of the meaning.
III. Methodology
3.1. Respondents
The target of this study was the fourth semester students from various
major at Tidar University. The total number of the respondents are 30 male and
female students aged 19-22 years old. In these 30 respondents 22 respondentss or
73,3% were English majors and 8 respondentss or 26,7% were non-English major.
3.2. Procedures
The questionnaire are made using Google form, then I just shared the link
of the questionnaire to the respondents asking about their behaviour on watching
movies and their opinion on watching English Movies to improve listening skill.
The questionnaire is contained 10 questions asking about the agreement of some
specific statement about movies. The procedures of this study was conducted in
May 2018 to students of Tidar University.
1. Subtitle preferences
“Because sometimes we don't know about the conversation or what are the
speakers talking about so subtitles will make us easy to understand the meaning”
(respondents initial TA)
“Because sometimes i don’t know what the actor/actress saying about, by subtitles
then i know the meaning” (respondents initial TN).
And some of them also said that it is because learn pronunciation from the
native is best way. And the rest of the respondent, 4 respondents or 13,3% of the
respondents don’t learn correct pronunciation from movies.
“I can’t learn correct pronunciation if the words only spoken once, I can
understand it if I heard the words few times” (respondent initial TA)
From the respondents that don’t learn correct pronunciation through movie, it is
just because their level of English understanding, not because the movie.
“So we can identified different dialects and accents not only american, british and
australian but also understand how black americans speak is totally different with
the white ones” (respondent initial AF)
The example of person that learn British accent well from movie is the
famous selebgram Skinnyfabs, he can speak British accent really well, and he said
that he learn it from Harry Potter movie. So when someone can master in an
accent it means that he/she can understand enough when listen an accent being
spoken.
And the 6,8% respondents or 2 students that disagree with the
statement said that it is because they are not really good in English, so it is just
because the level of understanding.
100% of the respondents or 30 respondents agree that they learn new vocabularies
through movies.
“i can learn english from the different side of my life, ex : from Sci-Fi movies"

“I can get so many vocabularies from movies because there are so many story that
told by movie, sometimes pirates, love, ghost, alien, and others, so I’ll get
vocabularies that I never heard before” (respondent initial NN)
Richard (1987) said that students need to coordinate the visual, oral, and
textual information to learn new words, proverbs, idioms, slang, and others, and
the example is using movie. Students will get new vocabularies that related to the
context. There are many genres of movies, and it is has so many topics. Example
when the movie tells about outer space, then the students will get new
vocabularies from outer space, when they watch science movie they will get new
science vocabularies.
And 16,7% respondents or 5 respondents don’t agree with the statement, and they
said that it was difficult to understand.
“ because slangs don’t have the real meaning from its word, so I can’t understand
it if I heard it for the first time, and also I can”t use the slang in everyday life
because the culture in movies are different with mine”
6. You need a new listening teaching method that can attract your
interest.
100% of the respondents or 30 respondent said that they need a new listening
teaching method that can attract their interest.
“with new method it makes us more interesting not bored as usual” (respondent
initial RA)
It is show that the recent listening method is boring and not make the students
interesting with it. With new listening teaching method, the students will interest
with it and make them happy and enjoy listening class so their listening skill will
improve.
100% of the respondents or 30 respondents agree that they need free media
that provides free movies. Free means that they don’t need to pay to watch the
movies. They only need to download the app then sign in to it.
“For the learner in university we like free movies better than paid movies isn't it?

“free is better than paid, because there are some media that provides movies but
we need to pay so damn expensive , it is not affordable for students like us”

8. Using media Iflix app to watch free movie helps you practicing
Listening skill
73,3% of respondents or 22 respondents agree that using Iflix App helps them
to practicing listening skill.
“because Iflix has so many genres of movies, and when I watch movie frequently
I’ll listen english dialogues more and more so watching movie is practicing too”

“it is art of practicing listening skill if you pay attention to every dialogue that
spoken by the actors” (respondent initial RS)
Conclusion
When students learn to improve their English Listening skill, they need to do a lot
of practices, and one of the practice is by watch movie. It is an interesting way to
improve English because students nowadays are boring if only practice using the
recording in the laboratory. And the media that will they use is Iflix, a streaming
movie App in Android and IOS. After the students watch the movie teacher must
give the students an assignment to make them get new information or knowledge
for example like language and get new vocabularies, know how to pronounce
words correctly, know how to using stress, and many others.
