CHAPTER III

Methodology

This chapter presents the characterization of the research method. It provides information

about the method that was used in engaging this research as well as a justification for the use of

this method. This section displays the methods of research used, population frame and sample

size, instrumentation, and statistical treatment of the data. It also discusses the role of the

researcher in qualitative research.

This research identifies the utilization of social media and effects on the students'

academic performance at STI College Pasay Inc. According to the study of Tamayo, Sacha, &

Dela Cruz (2014), shows that Social Media and Academic Performance affects each other

wherein when a student is indulged in Social Media it has effects on the performance to class

activities.

Methods of Research

The study will use a Correlational design which is appropriate for the objectives of the

research. This is to determine the effects of social media sites among all students, especially to

their academic performances. Moreover, it aims to examine the problems stated in the study

whereas determining the major effects of using social media, the effect of social media on their

relationships and in their academic performance. The types of research that are used in the study

are survey and interview.

Population, Sample Size and Sampling Technique

The respondents of the study are composed of 174 selected students which comprise

100% of the total population of STI Pasay. This research work will be conducted at STI Pasay.
In this research work, Convenience sampling technique will be used to select the respondents. A

convenience sampling is a type of non-probability sampling method where the sample is taken

from a group of people easy to contact or to reach. This type of sampling is also known as grab

sampling or availability sampling. There are no other criteria for the convenience sampling

method except that people be available and willing to participate. The researchers will ask those

students who are willing and available to answer the formulated survey questionnaire. The

respondents came from the STI Pasay Senior High School grade 11 and 12 and Colleges.

Description of Research Instrument

The researchers used a questionnaire as the research instruments and the scale used in this

are Likert scale because it is the most widely used approach to scaling responses in survey

research, such that the term is often used interchangeably with a rating scale, although there are

other types of rating scales. The researchers will formulate a 35 item survey questionnaire that

intends to determine the effects of using social media to the students ranging from the aspects

which are considered as affected aspects of an individual and the aspects are: social aspect, and

academic performances and also the benefits they derive from using social media and what is the

help of social media to students on their academic performance.

Data Gathering Procedure

In regards to the gathering of data, the researchers will utilize formulated survey

questionnaire. In this study, the researchers will follow the following step by step procedures.

The researcher will distribute the formulated survey questionnaire. The questionnaire is given to

both Senior High School, grade 11 and grade 12, and Colleges in all STI College Pasay Inc.
students. There are 174 prints of the questionnaire that will be distributed to the students and

returned with answers.

Statistical Treatment

In order to determine the profile of the respondents, the researchers used this formula to

get the percentage.
