How to prevent Invasive Species?

Introduction
H.I.P.P.O.

There are many threats to biodiversity today. The biggest ones

can be remembered by using the acronym H.I.P.P.O.:

Habitat Loss,
Invasive Species,
Pollution,
Human Population,
Overharvesting.
What are Invasive Species?
• They are Bullies in nature.
• They chase out the native plants and animals.
• Invasive species includes animals ,plants, and micro organisms
mostly introduced by human actions.

Scientific definition
• Any Specie reported to have become established outside of its
native range.
What are Invasive Species?
According to the Global Invasive Species Program (GISP)
“Invasive alien species are non native organisms that cause or
have the potential to cause harm to the environment , economics
or harm to the human.”

Example:
• Habitat alteration
• Hybridization
• Competition
• Predators
• Disease
• Threats

Invasive Species
Habitat alteration
Is when invasive species disturb the habitat structure. It mainly happens in
aquatic habitats through altering chemical and preventing the photosynthesis
process.

The floating mats change the whole ecosystem. Th

ey shade out any submerged plant life and impede
oxygen and carbon dioxide, making the water unsui
table for native plants, fish and other animals.

Invasive Species
Predators
Invasive predators may be so adept at capturing prey that prey populations
decline over time, and many prey species are eliminated from affected ecosy
stems

Since its accidental introduction to Guam in early

1950s it has caused the extinction of 10 of the 13
native forest birds, 2 out of 3 native mammals, an
d 9 of 12 native lizards.

fish and wild life service.
Invasive Species
Competition
invasive species, may prevent native species from obtaining food living spac,
or other resources. Over time, invading species can effectively replace native
ones,

The black or ship rat, of Eurasian origin is the

most significant invasive mammal species in
Africa. It is an indiscriminate feeder, causing
massive economic losses throughout Africa a
nd worldwide by consuming and contaminatin
g foodstuffs

Invasive Species
Disease
invasive species, may transmit un familiar diseases into the new habitat they
move. So the need of adaptation eradicates native species.

Triffid weed is an aggressive invasive shrub in

much of tropical Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. It
causes wildfires, skin complaints and asthma in
allergy-prone people,
Salvinia (Salvinia molesta) – Aquatic plant
Pathways
“Any means that allows entry or spread of an invasive
species.”(Campbell and kriesch)2003.”

• Through roots
• By accidental transportation
• By seeds
• Transported by wind or water
• Hitch on to our shoes, or an animals
body.
Preventing measures
Many strategies have been developed to stop the damage caused by invasive sp
ecies and to prevention future invasions.
Some of these are:

• Educating people about the dang

ers of transporting wildlife to new
areas.
• Promoting the harvest of invasive
species
• Replacing invasive plants with nat
ive plants
• Pulling invasive plants manually .
