TOPIC : Overpopulation

The latest census in Albania was scheduled for April 2011, and the results will be published in the
following months. The permanent population of Albania at the 2011 census had reached 2.83
million. The population density was 98.5 inhabitants per square kilometre, and the overall life
expectancy in Albania at birth was 78 years in 2011.[1] For the first time in the history of
population censuses in Albania, the population in urban areas (53.7%) was larger than the
population of rural areas (46.3%).[2] Albania has a high Human Development Index of 0.764,
ranking 75th in the world in 2016.[3] In 2016, Albania had a total population of 2,886,026 million,
1,461,326 million being males and 1,424,700 females. Otherwise 42,922 inhabitants have left
Albania and at the same year the number of immigrants in the country was by 25,846 inhabitants.[4]

Overpopulation is the most critical problem facing humanity. Overpopulation is a product of the
number of people on Earth multiplied by their per capita consumption and waste production.
Population growth is unsustainable. A short-term supply of cheap, abundant fossil fuels has
temporarily enabled human population to greatly exceed the carrying capacity of the planet. To
this, Albania proposes the following solutions:

1. Marriage Law
Various international treaties, conventions, and programmes for action address child
marriage. These include: the 1962 Convention on Consent to Marriage, Minimum Age for
Marriage, and Registration of Marriages; Sexuality education introduced in school
curriculum.
2. Family Planning and Reproductive Rights
As stipulated by law, the equal right to efficient and high-quality healthcare without
discrimination is a key principle of the healthcare system. [5] In Albania, contraception was
legalized in 1992, immediately after the collapse of communism; previous for this, it is
very difficult to obtain. [6] Contraception is provided free of charge at the stadium clinic.
Ensure access to contraception remains priorities for the Ministry of Health.[7] Recently, a
new family planning strategy was launched with UNFPA assistance for the period 2012-
2016.[8]

Therefore, The Albania Delegation provided a solution to overcome this problem with marriage
law and Family Planning and Reproductive Rights. Because in our opinion, it is the right solution
to overcome overpopulation.
