INSTRUCTION: Answer ALL questions.

Question 1

(a) Define “Mechatronics” and how it is different from the traditional approach of
designing.
(3 marks, C1)
(b) Based on Figure 1, name and briefly explain elements 1, 2, 3 and 4.
(2 marks, C1)

Figure 1 : Mechatronics system

(c) Define and give one (1) example of modelling and simulation.
(3 marks, C1)
(d) Identify four examples of mechatronics system in automotive industry.
(2 marks, C2)

Question 2

(a) Give an example of a product and describe the product in terms of functional design.
(2 marks, C2)
(b) The design level can be divided into three (3) categorized, that are adaptive design,
development design and new design. Briefly describe the meaning of new design
and give an example.
(2 marks, C2)
(a) The product live cost and profit cycle can be divided into two phases; premarket
phase and market phase. Draw the curve of product live cost and profit cycle and
explain each of phases in terms of profit and loss.
(6 marks, C3)

2
Question 3

(a) Figure 2 shows schematics diagram of PIC 16F877A wiring diagram. Answer the
following questions:

Figure 2: Schematic diagram

i. Identify four (4) data to initialize 2X16 Character LCD.

(2 marks, C2)

ii. Construct C programs for input and output initialization for Port A and Port D.

(2 marks, C3)

3
iii. Create a main program of LEDs and LCD Display in which when user press PB1,
LEDs will be blinked as pattern in Figure 3, then press PB2, LCD will display
character ‘Z’ at home position. Call function delay_ms(100) for delay. The header file
should be as follows:

#define PB1 RB0 #define D1 RA3

#define PB2 RB1
#define D2 RA4
#define D3 RA5

(6 marks, C4)

D1 D2 D3

Question 4

(a) There are a few criteria need to be considered by engineer to select the right sensor
in mechatronics application. List two characteristics of a sensor to measure the
sensor performance.
(2 marks, C1)
(b) Identify the appropriate sensor and actuator for the following mechatronics system.
i. Air-conditioning system.
ii. Anti-lock braking system
(2 marks, C2)
(c) For each selected proximity sensor in Table 1, find the ideal target size to be
detected.
Table 1: Type of Proximity Sensor

No Sensor Model Type Sn Diameter

1 XT118B1 Capacitive 5mm 18mm
2 XT130B1 Capacitive 10mm 30mm
