Introduction to Globalization and Global Communication


 Globalization has influenced global communication in a way that it has become a
necessity to all places, especially in the workplace.
 Language and cultural differences between two people can bridge gaps through
global communication.
 Technology is by far the biggest factor that globalization have contributed to global
communication.

B. History of Global Communication


 1876 ; Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone
 1877 ; Thomas Edison invents phonograph
 1894 ; Guglielmo Marconi invents the radio
 1940’s ; Digital technology, early Internet technology
 1944 ; First large automatic digital computer is built at Harvard
 1969 ; Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon is televised on the color globally
 1970’s ; Email is developed
 1980 ; First online newspaper
 1991 ; Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee invents WWW
 1997 ; First new blogs are introduced

C. Opportunities in Global Technological Pervasion of Culture


 Business owners can easily communicate through global communication, allowing
more access to fast transfer of information.
 Globalization help lessen cultural barriers because communication skills are
constantly developed.
 Global village is created when distance and isolation don’t matter anymore because
people are connected by technology.
D. Digital Divide and Other Inequalities
 Digital Divide begins with an unequal access to infrastructure networks though it
cannot be reduced to it.
 Digital Divide is differentiated with Digital Inequality in a sense that Divide is
primarily focused on the statistical data regarding how many people have access to
internet technology.
 Differences between rural and urban spaces are all the more important since the
development level of the country is low because of lack of telecommunication
infrastructure.
 Problems with Digital Inequalities usually exist between developed countries and
central regions, where the liberalization of telecommunication markets had led to
competition.
