Q.1. The following data refer to an open cycle gas turbine with a regenerator and having two stages with
inter-cooling and reheating.
Minimum temperature = 20 °C
Maximum temperature = 750 °C
Overall pressure ratio = 4
Isentropic efficiencies of compressor and turbine = 82 %
Regenerator effectiveness = 72 %
Intercooler effectiveness = 91 %
Determine : (i) Cycle thermal efficiency (ii) Cycle work ratio

Q.2. In a gas turbine plant air enters the compressor at 1 bar and 7 C. It is compressed to 4 bar with an
isentropic efficiency of 82%. The maximum temperature at the inlet to the turbine is 800 C. the
isentropic efficiency of the turbine is 85%. The calorific value of the fuel used is 43.1 MJ/kg. The
heat losses are 15% of the calorific value. Calculate the Thermal Efficiency, the Air/fuel ratio and the
Back work ratio (compressor to turbine work ratio). Take for air, Cp=1.005 KJ/kg K and  =1.4
For gas, Cp=1.147 KJ/kg K and  =1.33

Q.3. Air is taken in a gas turbine plant at 1.1 bar 20 °C. the plant comprises of LP and HP compressors and
LP and HP turbines. The compression in LP stage is upto 3.3 bar followed by intercooling to 27 °C.
The pressure of air after HP compressor is 9.45 bar. Loss in pressure during intercooling is of 0.15 bar.
Air from HP compressor is transferred to heat exchanger of effectiveness 0.65 where it is heated by the
gases from LP turbine. After heat exchanger, the passes through combustion chamber. The temperature
of gases supplied to HP turbine is 700 °C. The gases expand in HP turbine to 3.62 bar and then
reheated to 670 °C before expanding in LP turbine. The loss of pressure in reheater is 0.12 bar.
Determine,
(i) the overall efficiency (ii) the work ratio (iii) the mass flow rate when the power generated is
6000 kW
Assume isentropic efficiency of compression in both stages as 0.82 and isentropic efficiency of
expansion in turbines as 0.85.
Take for air: Cp=1.005 kJ/kgK, γ=1.4
for gases: Cp=1.15 kJ/kgK , γ=1.33

exiting the engine has a relative velocity of 340 m/s and the fuel/air ratio is 0.02 kg fuel/kg air.
Determine air & fuel flow rates and the Propulsive efficiency.

Q.5. A turbojet aircraft flies with a velocity of 260 m/s at an altitude where the air is at 35 kPa and -40 ºC.
The compressor has a pressure ratio of 10 and the temperature of gases at the turbine inlet is 1100 ºC.
Air enters the compressor at a rate of 45 kg/s . Assuming steady operating conditions with constant
specific heats, determine
(i) the temperature and pressure of the gases at the turbine exit
(ii) the velocity of the gases at the nozzle exit
(iii) propulsive efficiency of the cycle

Q.6. A jet plane is travelling at 0.309 km/s and has an engine that develops a thrust of 13344 N . The gas
exiting the engine has a relative velocity of 340 m/s and the fuel/air ratio is 0.02 kg fuel/kg air.
Determine air & fuel flow rates and the Propulsive efficiency.
