Lesson Overview Learn directions and the important of knowing the difference between east,
/Rationale west, south, and north.

Learning Objectives  Students will be able to identify directions using a map and
compass
 Discover new areas on the map
 Learn the importance of using a compass
Technology Uses the lesson utilizes the internet, YouTube, compass, navigation

Materials Map: local, city, county, state, US , Compass, markers, projector with a
computer linked to the internet
Opening to Lesson
 Ask students why do we need to know the difference between
directions
Body of Lesson
 Tell the students to watch the YouTube video in how to use a map,
compass to identify directions
 Ask students to follow the direction that was provided to them and
apply it to decides what’s north, east, west, south
 Review the direction with students in groups
Procedure  Display a map and a compass to the class to point to where North
,South , East, and West are located.
Groups assignment
 Split students into groups of four, one for each direction (North,
South, East, West)
 Each student within their group will find a famous location in the
world coming from their assigned direction.
 The groups will present their locations to the class.

Assessment Once students can complete the following, I will be confident in their
understanding pf directions on a map.
 Distribute maps to each pair of students with blank paper, markers, and
compasses
 Ask the students to locate South, East, and West, and North using a map
provided to them.
 Ask students to describe verbally where certain places are located
relative to the school’s location
 Students will be asked to identify several landmarks in the town relative
to their school.
