POWER SYSTEM ANALYSIS
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 70
Answer ONE question from each unit
All questions carry equal marks

UNIT – I
1. a) What are sequence components? Prove that the generator 4M CO2
will produce positive sequence voltages only.
b) A 100 MVA, 13.2 kV generator (G) having a synchronous 10M CO3
reactance of 10% is connected to a star-star transformer
T1 which feeds a 132 kV line having an impedance per
phase of 20+j50. At the receiving end of the line there
is a star-star step down transformer T2. A load drawing
60 MVA at 0.9 power factor lagging is connected to the
secondary of transformer T2. The transformer ratings are
as follows:
Transformer T1: 120MVA, 13.2/132kV, XT1=12%.
Transformer T2: 100MVA, 138/33kV, XT2=15%.
Using a base of 100 MVA and a voltage base of 33 kV in
the load side of the circuit, draw a one line impedance
diagram for the above power system showing all the
equipment parameters and the voltage base in different
sections of the system.

2. a) Show that the symmetrical component transformation is 7M CO2
power invariant.
b) The line currents in a 3-phase supply to an unbalanced 7M CO3
load are Ia = - 10+ j 20 , Ib = 12 - j10 and Ic = - 3 - j5
amperes respectively. The phase sequence is abc.
Determine the sequence components of currents.
UNIT – II
3. a) Prove that when there is no mutual coupling between the 7M CO2
elements of a network, the diagonal and off-diagonal
elements of the bus admittance matrix can be computed
as Yij   yij and Yij  Y ji .

b) Using the method of direct inspection, find the bus 7M CO3
admittance matrix for the network connection given:

4. a) Develop step-by-step algorithm to form Zbus, for the 7M CO2,
addition of element from a new bus to reference without
mutual coupling.
b) Form Zbus by algorithm for the power system network, 7M CO3
data for the network is given in the table below.

UNIT – III
5. a) Write down the assumptions made in reducing decoupled 6M CO1
method to fast decoupled method of power flow solution.
b) 8M CO4
Carry out one iteration of power flow analysis for the
power system with the following data and given the
voltages in polar form at the end of first iteration by NR
method.

6. a) Compare GS-method, NR, decoupled and FDLF methods 4M CO2
with respect to: Number of iterations, convergence
characteristic and memory requirements.
b) In a 2-Bus power system with Bus-1 as slack bus, V1= 10M CO3
1.00 p.u., P2=1 and Q2= 0.5 p.u. with Z12=
0.012+j0.16 p.u. Using GS-method, determine V2 after
first iteration. Also find the line flows and line losses.
UNIT – IV
7. a) Derive an expression for the fault current for a 7M CO2
single line-to-ground fault with fault impedance on an
unloaded generator.
b) A three phase fault with a fault impedance of 0.16 p.u. 7M CO3
occurs at bus 3 , for which ZBUS is given by :

Compute the fault current, the bus voltages and the line
currents during the fault. Assume pre-fault bus voltages
1.0 per unit.

8. a) List the various types of shunt and series faults and 4M CO1
enumerate their attributes.
b) A 3-phase line shown in figure, operating at 11 kV 10M CO5
and having a resistance of 1.5 Ohms and reactance
of 6 Ohms is connected to a generating station bus
bars through a 5 MVA step-up transformer having
reactance of 5%. The bus bars are supplied by a 12 MVA
generator having 25% reactance. Calculate the short
circuit kVA fed into a symmetric fault (i) at the load
end of the transformer and (ii) at the h.v. terminals of
the transformer.

UNIT – V
9. a) Deduce the equation to find synchronizing power 7M CO2
coefficient.
b) A 275 kV transmission line has following line constants. A 7M CO3
= 0.85∠500 , B = 200 ∠750 .The line delivers 150 MW with
|VS| = |VR| = 275 kV. Determine synchronizing power
coefficient.
OR
10 a) Differentiate between steady state stability and transient 6M CO2
. stability of a power system. Discuss the factors that affect
steady state stability and transient state stability.
b) A generator supplies 1.0 p.u. power to an infinite bus as 8M CO5
shown in figure. The terminal voltage and infinite bus
voltage are 1.0 p.u. All the reactances are on a common
base.

Determine steady state stability limit when both lines are


in and when one line is switched off.
