A. Preparation Checking of Attendance
Review of the previous lesson

Motivation/Priming The teacher shows a video about an action song

entitled “balance on one foot”. Students then, follow
the movements in the action song/dance song.

The teacher asks the students afterwards on how

difficult to balance on one foot but if the two foots
stay together, then it is easier to balance. The
teacher also asks about the importance of balancing
life.

The teacher discusses about a Trial Balance

A trial balance is a list and total of all the debit and

credit accounts for an entity for a given period to
check the accuracy of the company’s accounting
records.

STEPS in the preparation of a Trial Balance

1. Write the Company Name, name of the statement
and the date reporting period.
2. The accounts are arranged in the following order:
assets, liabilities, equity, income and expenses.
3. Post the asset, withdrawals and expense account
balances on the debit column.
4. Post the liability, capital and income account
balances on the credit column.
5. Total the amounts of debit and credit column.

Activity Activity 1. The class is divided into two (2)

On the board, student representatives identify the
normal balances of each account and post it on debit
or credit column based on the following total
account balances from the general ledger below:

Account Names Total Balances

Cash ₱ 150,000
Accounts Receivable ₱ 8,000
Supplies ₱ 6,000
Accounts Payable ₱ 20,000
Capital ₱ 70,000
Drawings ₱ 10,000
Service Income ₱ 60,000
Rent Expense ₱ 5,000
Advertising Expense ₱ 5,000
Transportation ₱ 4,000

Account Names Debit Credit

B. ANALYSIS
Guide Questions:

1. What have you noticed about your answers? Is

there any difference between the two groups?
2. What are the normal balance of each account?
3. How about if you total all the balances of debit
and credit column, are they balance or not?
4. If the total debit unequal total credits, what will
happen? Explain your insights.
C. Abstraction Preparing a trial balance is sometimes known as
"proving the ledger” to test the accuracy of account
balances in the ledger.

Preparing a trial balance for a company serves to

detect any mathematical errors that have occurred in
the double-entry accounting system.

If the total debits equal the total credits, the trial

balance is considered to be balanced, and there
should be no mathematical errors in the ledgers.
However, this does not mean there are no errors in a
company's accounting system.

If the accounts do not add up or unequal, there is an

error in the journal, the posting process, or in the
preparing of the trial balance.

Thus, the purpose of the trial balance is to test the

arithmetical accuracy, find errors, and help making
adjustments and preparing the financial statement.
