Performance of a Half Wave and Single Bridge Rectifier

Objective:
 To learn the performance of Half Wave and Single Bridge Rectifier using
Pspice software.

Introduction:
A rectifier is an electronic device that converts AC voltage into DC voltage. In
other words, it converts alternating current to direct current. A rectifier is used in
almost all the electronic devices.
 Half Wave Rectifier:

During the positive half cycle the diode is under forward bias condition and it
conducts current to RL (Load resistance). A voltage is developed across the load,
which is same as the input AC signal of the positive half cycle.
Alternatively, during the negative half cycle the diode is under reverse bias
condition and there is no current flow through the diode. Only the AC input
voltage appears across the load and it is the net result which is possible during the
positive half cycle. The output voltage pulsates the DC voltage.

 Single Bridge Rectifier:

A Bridge rectifier is an Alternating Current (AC) to Direct Current (DC)

converter that rectifies mains AC input to DC output. Bridge Rectifiers are widely
used in power supplies that provide necessary DC voltage for the electronic
components or devices. They can be constructed with four or more diodes or any
other controlled solid state switches.
Depending on the load current requirements, a proper bridge rectifier is selected.
Components’ ratings and specifications, breakdown voltage, temperature ranges,
transient current rating, forward current rating, mounting requirements and other

considerations are taken into account while selecting a rectifier power supply for
an appropriate electronic circuit’s application. The nature of supply, i.e., a single
phase or three-phase supply decides these rectifiers. The Single phase bridge
rectifier consists of four diodes for converting AC into DC.

Task 2: Performance of a Single Bridge Rectifier
A single-phase bridge rectifier is shown in Figure below. The sinusoidal input
voltage has a peak of 170 V, 60 Hz. The load inductance L is 6.5mH, and the load
resistance R is 0.5Ω. Use PSpice
(a) to plot the instantaneous output voltage vo and the load current io and

Conclusion:
In this lab we have learnt about the performane of Half Wave and Single Phase
Bridge Rectifier. We also learnt how to plot instantaneous output voltage and
load current for Half Wave and Single Phase Bridge Rectifier using PSpice and
also calculated input power factor.
