Different components of the filter:

1. As shown in the diagram in the previous slide, that is how the main container will
look like.
2. The main will be fitted inside a larger container for replacement of material every 6-
8 months due to the formation of sludge in the fine and coarse sand layers.
3. Each department will be separated by a diffuser basin, which will help increase the
water quality since it is stopping the filtrate from each compartment for mixing into
the pure water.
4. There will be a fourth layer added to the filter shown in the next slide which will
contain activated charcoal and iron which binds with arsenic iron compound formed
in the first layer which helps improve the water taste.

THE FIRST COMPARTMENT:

 This compartment contains rusted iron nails and brick chips, since iron is a very good
binding agent.
 The arsenic present in the filter will bind with iron oxide.
 The arsenic-iron compound is easier to filter and removes majority of the arsenic
present in the water.

THE SECOND AND THIRD COMPARTMENT:

 The water passes through the diffuser basin leaving the majority of the arsenic iron
compound in their with the rusted brick chips and iron nails.
 The sand works as a barrier for the remainder for the arsenic and other impurities,
which get stuck in the sand and form sludge.
 The next compartment also has the same function, i.e. to remove as much impurities
as possible.
 These compartments need to be changed every 6 months and can be done with the
valves provided to each compartment which are manually operated and easy to
refill.
 Materials used are easily available.
 Cost: Easily available in surroundings but will be provided after every 6 months.

THE FOURTH COMPARTMENT AND SOME EXTERNAL COMPONENTS:

 This contains activated charcoal which absorbs all of the remaining iron and the
iron-arsenic compound and helps in improving the water taste.
 It’s the last step of purification in this system.
 The activated charcoal doesn’t need to be replaced every 6 months jus the impure
water that gathers around it need to be changed every 8-10 months.
 The overhead water tank will be made up of scrap steel so as to reduce the cost.
 The container will have a outer covering so that when it needs to be carried it
doesn’t sustain much damage and the refilling of materials is also easy.
 Cost: Rupees 50 per 500 gram.
CONCLUSION:
 In summation, I would like to say that people are suffering and there’s no denying it.
We have to do our bit in helping the needy in the most ecofriendly and feasible way
possible.
 My filter is a step towards helping people affected by the deadly poison known as
arsenic.
 Clean drinking water is not a luxury, it is a necessity and it should not cost a fortune
to be able to access it.
