Chapter -1
Introduction

1.1 Theoretical Background

Earthquake field investigations repeatedly confirm that irregular structures suffer more damage
than their regular counterparts. Torsional irregularity is one of the most important factors, which
causes severe damage (even collapse) for the structures. A large number of studies exist which
investigate various aspects of torsional irregularity including geometric asymmetry, analysis
methods such as pushover and non-linear dynamic analyses etc, comparison and discussion of code
provisions and both experimental and analytical studies.
The torsional irregularity is an imperative parameter which measures the stretch out of torsion
impact on the structures. It can be interpreted as the proportion of highest drift to the mean drift of
the individual story. Torsional irregularity should be considered when maximum story drift at one
side of the structure transverse to a axis is more than 1.2 times the mean of the story drift at the
two closures of the structure. Δ1 and Δ2 are the story drift (or inter-story drifts) at the two closures
of the structure. Relative eccentricity is generally considered the main factor influencing the
torsional effects.

1.2 Problem Definition

Today’s diverse architectural design trends have produced tall buildings of various forms, such
as twisted, tilted, and free forms, as can be seen in the infinity Tower in Dubai, Veer Towers in Las
Vegas and Phare Tower project in Paris. The structural efficiency of each system, in conjunction
with building forms, heights and height-to-width aspect ratios, is studied; parametric structural
models are generated to investigate the impacts of variation of important geometric configuration
of complex-shaped tall buildings. Structures may be irregular due to non-uniform distribution of
mass, stiffness, strength or due to their structural form.
For regular structures, simple analysis techniques such as the Equivalent Static Method have
been calibrated against advanced analysis methods, such as the Inelastic Dynamic Time-History
Analysis. The Indian Standard code IS-1983:2002 (Part-1) defines a number of structural
irregularities. The code suggests a different approach of analysis for irregular structures. In this
paper, response of a 10-storeyed plane frame to lateral loads is studied for mass and stiffness
irregularities in the elevation. Hence proper understanding of the seismic behavior of irregular
building needs to be studied and a proper guideline is to found out.
Growth of the population is increasing day by day. To meet the requirements of the population,
high rise buildings are very much needed. The high rise buildings are to be designed to resist
earthquake forces. A regular structure is said to have uniform mass, stiffness, strength and
structural form. The behavior of a regular structure to earthquake forces are predictable. The
behavior of an irregular structure to earthquake forces are unpredictable because of mass
irregularity, torsion irregularity, weak storey, diaphragm discontinuity etc.

Literature Review

2.1 General
STUDY OF TORSIONAL EFFECT UNDER SEISMIC CONDITION ON BUILDING WITH
IRREGULARITIES
Ms. Sandhya R. Ghuse1, Mr. Mayur K Ghumde (2016)
The aim of this project is to study the effect of various types of irregularities in building regarding
its seismic behavior. To analyze the structural frames and develop guidelines regarding the seismic
analysis of irregular building.

STUDY ON MASS IRREGULARITY OF HIGH RISE BUILDINGS

Mr.Darshan, Miss Shruthi (2017)
The effect of irregularity depends on the structural model used, location of irregularity and analysis
method. In this thesis, analysis has been carried out by ETABS software. The building is subjected
to dynamic analysis. One regular building with uniform mass is studied with 4 irregular buildings
with varying masses for Base shear, Mode shapes, storey drift, story shear, Torsion moment.
Suitable codes are used for analysis and design.

TORSIONAL IRREGULARITIES IN MULTI-STOREYED STRUCTURES

Mr.Adarsh, Mr.Rajeeva (2017)
To assess the torsional effect on the structures in the present study 5 types of structures having
same different perimeter area are considered and strengthened by introduction of shear wall cores.
A simple linear comparison based on eccentricity is also carried out for the structures. Structures
with asymmetric distribution of mass and stiffness undergoes torsional motions during earthquake.
The performance of the structures is assessed as per the procedure prescribe in IS 1893:2002.
Equivalent loads and wind loads are considered for the analysis of the structure. The analysis of
the structural models is carried out using ETABS 2015 software.

SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF MULTISTORIED RCC BUILDING DUE TO MASS

IRREGULARITY BY TIME HISTORY ANALYSIS.
Mya mya aye, P.narasimharao (2018)
In this thesis design of structure for this building is carried out by using ETABS software and
computer-aided analysis. One regular building and three irregular buildings are compared. They
have same plan size but mass irregularity is considered at 6th floor, 8th floor and 10th floor of the
building. The stability checking such as storey drift, overturning moment and sliding are also
checked in the building with static analysis and also with dynamic analysis (time history analysis).
And then, after the models with and without change of mass and inter-storeyed height are being
analyzed, structural response (storey drift, storey shear and storey moment) and member forces are
compared.

TORSIONAL IRREGULARITY OF MULTI-STOREY STRUCTURES

Rahila Thaskeen , Shinu Shajee (2016)

To assess the torsional effect on the structures in the present study 4 types of structures having
same outer perimeter area are considered and strengthened by introduction of shear wall cores.
A simple linear comparison based on eccentricity is also carried out for G+12 and G+17 structures.
Structures with asymmetric distribution of mass and stiffness undergoes torsional motions during
earthquake. The performance of the structures is assessed as per the procedure prescribe in IS
1893:2002 and ASCE 7-05. The analysis of the structural models is carried out using ETABS
software
2.2 Research Gap

2.3 Objective of Study

(i) To determine optimum position of shear walls by taking irregular building plan.
(ii) To determine the structural response under wind and seismic loading using shear walls with
the same cross sectional area in different models.
(iii) To find parameters like storey displacements, base shear, and relative storey drifts.
(iv)To study the structural response for torsional irregularities.
(v) To understand the behavior of irregular building subjected to lateral loading with the help of
time period, frequency, modal mass participating ratio and the magnitudes of stress resultants.
