Specific Learning objectives to ensure covered:

● Be able to take a Sexual History (IS01)


● Describe how to discriminate between normal and abnormal vaginal discharge (CS06, CS03, CS08,
Index conditions vaginal infections, Clinical sciences)
 Thrush: Cottage cheese, neutral odour. Vaginal pruritis, soreness, superficial dyspareunia, vulval
erythema
 Bacterial Vaginosis: Thin, off-white, fishy. Not commonly associated with other symptoms.
 Trichomonas: rofuse, frothy, greenish-yellow, malodorous discharge (no trickery). Vulval pruritis
and soreness, superficial dyspareunia, PCB, strawberry cervix, dysuria, abdo pain

● Be able to compare the current methods of contraception available, their mechanism of action, and
efficacy. (Clinical sciences – pharmacology of oral contraceptives, Population Health Sciences, risks and
benefits of oral contraceptives)

● Describe the issues related to teenage pregnancy ( CS02, IS04, Behavioural sciences, Risk taking as
regards sexual behaviours. Population Health Sciences, increasing incidence of sexually transmitted
infections, Issues of teenage pregnancy)

● Understand what is meant by Gillick competence,and the Fraser Guidelines


Fraser – prescribing contraceptive to under 16:
 Capacity to understand, retain and weigh up
 Health will suffer without treatment
 Interests of patient
 Likely to do it anyway
 Definitely won't tell parents
● Discuss the issues raised for clinicians dealing with teen sex and safeguarding (PB03, PS03, PB04)
