MT60003: Assignment#4
Autumn, 2019-2020

Due on 25/10/19

1. Solve the following ODE from t=0 to 3 with h=0.1 using (a) RK2 (Heun True value at
method) (b) 4th order RK t=3
is:
4.805946
dy
= y sin 2 (t )
dt
y(0)=1;
Compare with exact solution.

2. If water is drained from a vertical cylinder tank by opening a valve at the base, Exact value:
the water will flow fast when the tank is full and slow down as it continues to 60 minutes
drain. As it turns out, rate at which the water level drops is:
dy
= −k y
dt
Where k is a constant depending on the shape of the hole and the cross sectional
area of the tank and drain hole. The depth of water, y is measures in feet and
time in minutes. If k=0.1, determine how long it takes the tank to drain if the
fluid level is 9 ft initially. Solve by i) Euler, ii) Ralston RK2, iii) RK4 and
compare the results with exact solution.

3. Solve the following second order differential equation by 4th order RK: Convert the
second order
d2y dy
2
+ 0. 5 + 7 y = 0 ODE to two
dx dx first order
Where, y (0 ) = 4; y ′(0 ) = 0 ODES.
at x=5
Take h=0.5 and solve for x=0 to 5. Plot y versus x. Plot y ′ versus x. y=0.064327
dy/dx=
-2.12274

4. The following equations define the concentration of two reactants in an CA=0.02099

CB=19.8916
isothermal reactor.

dC A
(g / cc − min ) = −0.5C A
dt
dC B
(g / cc − min ) = 4 − 0.3C A − 0.1C B
dt
If initial conditions are CA=4g/cc, CB =6gm/cc, calculate the time evolution
of the concentrations of two reactants up to 10 minutes using Ralston RK2
method. Take time step for integration (h) as 0.5 minute. Plot the time
evolution of the concentrations of two reactants.

0.5 x1 + 0.7 x 2 + 1.2 x3 + 0.4 x 4 ≤ 80
x1 , x 2 , x3 , x 4 ≥ 0
6. Minimize: (use DUAL problem method) W=18
w = 8 x1 + 4 x 2 + 6 x3
X={0.2, 2,
subjected to : 1.4}

4 x1 + x 2 + 3 x3 ≥ 7
2 x1 + x 2 + 4 x3 ≥ 8
x1 , x 2 , x3 ≥ 0
