Take a look at the paper under your desk.
The color of each paper represents the group where
you belong.
Those who hold green will be the Group 1
and pink will be the Group 2. Those who hold
yellow will be the Group 3 and blue will be the
Group 4.
Okay, go to your respective groups and keep
silent.
Here is the mechanics. Kindly read it, James.
: Mechanics:

1. Each group will be given a

folder, card board and
marker. Inside the folder are
questions that you need to
answer.
2. Every answer corresponds a
letter from the choices.
3. From questions 1 to 8, write
the letters of your answer on
the card board.
4. The first group to finish
answering the questions
correctly and first to raise their
answer will be the one to paste
and reveal our topic for today.
5. You have given a 5 minutes to
finish the task.

C. Presentation of the Lesson:

Group ____ is the first group who finish the

activity. May I have 2 representatives for Group
____ to reveal our topic for today?

: STANDARD DEVIATION

And that’s our topic for this afternoon.

C. Lesson Proper

Who wants to read the definition of Standard

Deviation? Yes, Ronalyn? : Standard Deviation is a numerical
used to indicate how widely
individuals in a group vary.
It means that we are going to see how values
are apart from each other.
This is the formula for standard deviation:

SD 
 ( x  x) 2

Where SD is the standard deviation;

x is the individual score;

x is the mean; and

N is the number of scores.

In able to perform the formula in solving
standard deviation we have the following steps:

Who wants to read the first step? Yes Step 1: Tabulate the given data.
Michael?

Example:
Set of test scores: 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18.
Scores(x) (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ ) (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )2
12
13
14
15
16
17
18
N=7
How we get N=7?
: We get N=7 on the number of scores,
sir.
Precisely!

What is the second step? : Step 2: Compute the mean.

In our previous lessons, we discussed how to

get the mean of ungrouped data. Am I right, class?
So, who wants to compute the mean of the
given set of test scores? Yes, Kelly? 12+13+14+15+16+17+18 105
: = = 15
7 7
While Kelly is answering on the board, try it
also on your seats.
Correct!
Did you get the same answer, class? : Yes, sir.

That’s good!

What is the third step? : Find the deviation from the mean
(𝑥 − 𝑥̅ ).

Precisely!

How can we do this? Yes Benny? : We will subtract the mean from each
score.

Absolutely!

Example: (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )= 12-15=-3

Who wants to continue to answer it on the

board? Yes Novie?
:
Scores(x) (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ ) (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )2
12 -3
13 -2
14 -1
15 0
16 1
17 2
18 3
N=7
Excellent!

What is the fourth step? : Squared the deviations (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )2

How can we do this? Yes Shiela? : We square each difference of scores

and the mean, sir.

Exactly!
Example: (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )2 = (−3)2 = 9

Who wants to try it on the board? Yes, Renzy?

:
Scores(x) (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ ) (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )2
12 -3 9
13 -2 4
14 -1 1
15 0 0
16 1 1
17 2 4
18 3 9
N=7
Very good!
How about the fifth step?
: Step 5: Add all the squared
deviations (∑(𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )2 ).
Who wants to add the squared deviations? Yes,
Vea?
:∑(𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )2 = 9 + 4 + 1 + 0 + 1 +
4 + 9 =28
Very good!
Can we now use the given formula?
: Yes, sir.

Step 6: Use the formula to compute the

standard deviation (SD).
Who wants to try it on the board?

: SD 
 ( x  x) 2

28
=√ = √4 = 2
7

Did she get the correct answer? : Yes, sir.

Very good.
Another example: Scores of a student in
their Mathematics quizzes. (94, 94, 92, 94, 96)
Who wants to tabulate the given data? Yes, Ana?

:
Scores(x) (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ ) (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )2
94
94
92
94
96
Very good!
What is the mean of the given data? Yes, 94+94+92+94+96 470
Jane? : = = 94
5 5

Correct!
Who wants to find the deviations from the
mean? Yes, Mark? :
Scores(x) (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ ) (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )2
94 0
94 0
92 -2
94 0
96 2
N=5

Excellent! :
Next, who wants to try to square the Scores(x) (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ ) (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )2
deviations? Yes, Jen? 94 0 0
94 0 0
92 -2 4
94 0 0
96 2 4

Next who wants to add all the squared

deviations? Yes, Jonny?
: ∑(𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )2 = 0 + 0 + 4 + 0 + 4 = 8

Lastly, who wants to solve for the standard

deviation? Yes, Jonny?
: SD   ( x  x) 2

8
= √ = √1.6 = 1.26
5
Correct!
Did you understand class? : Yes, sir.
D. Application

If there are no questions. Let’s have an

activity entitled, “Complete Me”.

Kindly read the mechanics, Rowena. : Mechanics:

1. Four groups will be formed.
Go back to your groups
silently.
2. You will be given a data and
compute the standard deviation
by completing the table
provided.
3. Each group will have a
representative to explain their
work.
4. Write your names in a one-
fourth sheet of paper.
5. You have given a 5 minutes to
finished the task.

Is the mechanics clear, class? : Yes, sir!

You may now begin!

Group 1 and 2: Supposed a class achieved
the following grades on a Math test, find the
standard deviation.
:

Class 1 got a standard deviation of

10.20.

Very good Group 1 and 2!

Group 3 and 4: Supposed a class achieved the
following grades on a Math test, find the standard
deviation.
:

Class 2 got a standard deviation of

6.46.

Very good Group 3 and 4!

E. Valuing

“Every deviation from right brings you into

danger.”
It means if we do bad things it will lead us to
trouble. Always do what is right in the presence of
God.
F. Generalization

Based from what we have learned this

afternoon, what is standard deviation? Yes,
Fredrick? : Standard Deviation is a numerical
value used to indicate how widely
individuals in a group vary.

Excellent!
What are the 5 steps in calculating standard
deviation? Yes, Stephanie?
: Step 1: Tabulate the given data.
Step 2: Compute the mean.
Step 3: Find the deviation from the
mean (𝑥 − 𝑥̅ ).
Step 4: Square the deviations.
Step 5: Add all the squared deviations.
Step: 6Use the formula to compute the
standard deviation.

Very good!

IV. Evaluation:
Bring out a one whole sheet of paper.
And compute for the standard deviation
for each set of numbers.
1. (12, 13, 14, 16, 17) : 1.85
2. (7, 7, 14, 18, 20) : 5.42
3. (12, 13, 15, 19, 20) : 3.19
4. (4, 7, 8, 10, 15) : 3.66
