A talk on Sittannavasal by R. Gopu is to be held on Oct.5, 5.30 p.m. at Arkay Centre, Luz. Open to all. The Pudukkottai region in Tamil Nadu has a great Jaina tradition. Sittannavasal near Pudukkottai has some of the earliest frescoes in South India. The paint- ings of Sittannavasal, dating to the ninth century in the Pandya king- dom, are of classicism and historical significance comparable to the Buddhist art of Ajanta and Hindu art in Thanjavur Brihadeesvar- am. The paintings of Sittannavasal are barely visible now thanks to the ravage of time. The talk will intro- duce Sittannavasal and its historical monuments, ranging over several centuries, including prehistory.

Dr. V. Umamaheswaran, a longtime resident of Fourth Trust Cross Street, Mandaveli passed away on September 5 at the age of 97. He was a veterinary doctor who retired as professor of surgery from Madras Veterinary College. After complet- ing his schooling at P. S. High School in the 1930s, he graduated from the Madras Veterinary College, Vepery and then trained in veterinary surgery at Tierartzliche Hochs- chule in Hanover, Germany in the late 1950s, writing his thesis in the German language. Since his return, he taught at Madras Veterinary College, combining hospital clinical practice as well as teaching and research to which he made several original contributions. In his later years, he served as honorary vet at the Animal Welfare Board (Government of India) and went around the city to treat animals. Said his daughter, “Many recall his selfless service to alleviate the sufferings of animals. Milkmen around this place remem- ber him as the only doctor who was available at call any time day or night to treat cows and buffaloes. He was the only horse specialist in Chennai during the height of his professional years.” “Besides treating pet animals like dogs and cats, he had treated elephants, tigers, bears and sheep,” added his daughter. The Alumni Association of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University presented him the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 .

For kolu dolls hawker Devi, the festival may not bring much money but it breaks her monotonous life

By Dheepti O. J.

For 50-year-old kolu doll seller Devi, it’s not only about selling the dolls. “It’s more about meeting people and having a chat with my regular customers,” she says. Devi claims that she has been selling kolu dolls in Mylapore for 40 years. She resides in Perungalathur. This year, her stall is at the gate of ICICI Bank complex in North Mada Street. On the eve of every Navarathri season, she and her husband, Balaiah buy dolls from traditional kolu doll makers of Madurai, Usilampatti and nearby areas. “This business goes on for a month till Ayudha pooja. Then, we spend the whole year selling fruits in suburban trains. It is so hectic that we rarely get time to share our thoughts with people,” she says. Navarathri though creates a break from her monotonous life. “People talk very briefly as they window-shop but even if they recognise me or ask me how I am, it makes me happy,” she says. She says business has been low this year. “Clay dolls are gradually fading away,” says Devi. People have shifted to buying papier-mache dolls as they are less in weight and easier to transport to foreign countries. “We take loans and invest over two lakhs to buy the dolls. We barely make a profit of Rs.25,000, and spend the rest of the year repaying loans. Similar is the case of most hawkers here,” says Devi. But she is happy her trusted clients land up. “Regulars continue to buy from me as they believe I have kairasi,”she says. Shopper Geetha from T. Nagar who has just packed a few bommais here, affirms it.

Deputy CM visits Valleeswaran Thottam where old blocks are to make way for new

Residents in the tiny apartments, some 200 sq ft in area, built in late 1980s and slowly coming apart in Valleeswaran Thottam in R. A. Puram have told the deputy chief minister, O. Paneerselvam who went around a small area of this colony on last Friday that they have two issues to highlight. They are happy the state is going to demolish and rebuild all the old blocks built under the state’s Slum Clearance Board watch. But they told Paneerselvam not to build beyond three floors although the plan

not to build beyond three floors although the plan is for a 400 sq ft apartment

is for a 400 sq ft apartment for each family because many elders will not be able to access the houses far above since the blocks will not have lifts. Pannerselvam spent some 45 minutes in this congested colony, talking to residents and getting feed- back. There are over ten blocks here. Residents who reside here and have valid documents will be given a fixed sum of cash to meet their rentals while the construction is on – it may take 18 months. Similar plans are in place in land which the Slum Board developed some decades ago in Mylapore – Kapali Thotam and Visalakshi Thottam being two of them.

While Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) has plans to reconstruct the dilapidated Slum Board tenements in many parts of Mylapore, residents are raising some issues in public. A few weeks ago, officials of TNSCB pasted notices on the doors of flats in blocks that were going to be demolished. While deputy chief minister O. Paneer- selvam inspected Valleeswaran Thottam at R. A. Puram that is set to be demolished soon, the residents of Kapali Thotam, a TNSCB colony near the Thirumyilai MRTS station (where small flats are also slated for demolition) are seeking a discussion before plans unfold. They have pasted posters at public places. The posters list the requirements which the residents wish to be considered before the reconstruction of their colonies. Krishnakumar, a resident of Kapali Thotam said, “We want the officials to hold a meeting and listen to our concerns before they start the reconstruction work.”

toms of dengue. Vijayakumari, a staff nurse at UPHC at C.P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet, says that only one dengue case has been reported in Mylapore. She says, “Every day, we do house visits to locate people affected by fever. In case if they have had the fever for more than five days, we ask them to get their blood test done at the UPHCs. And if the cases are severe, we refer them to government hospitals.”

During their visits, she says, they ask residents to keep their surround- ings clean and to not allow water to stagnate to avoid breeding of mosquitoes. Mylapore has a few UPHCs located across the neighbourhood.

With the number of den- gue cases on the increase in the city, staff at local Urban Primary Health Centers (UPHCs) are out in the field to keep a tab on people, especially children who are ill and to share words of advice. Since this past week, UPHC staff have been visiting densely-populated colonies of the Mylapore area to check if there are people showing any symp-

Abiramapuram resident contributes for recharge wells at public spaces

By Our Staff Reporter

To promote the cause of rain water harvesting (RWH), Abhiramapuram resident Vasanthi Rajiv donated Rs.36000 to the local Chennai Corporation unit (ward 123) for the construction of recharge wells on roadsides. “For some time, I have been urging my neighbours to construct recharge wells on our street. But there was not much water logging here. Hence, I decided to contribute towards RWH systems in water stagnant public spaces in my neigh- bourhood,” says Vasanthi, who has RWH systems at her house in Janaki Avenue, Abhiramapuram.

Vasanthi says that her friend Ganesh of Alwarpet informed her that residents can contribute towards RWH at public places. “Ganesh has also contributed to- wards the construction of a recharge well outside his house at C. P. Ra- maswamy Road,” she says. Using her donation, Arul Maran, AE of ward 123 says they have sunk recharge wells at St.Mary’s Road, Mandaveli and Bheemana Garden Street, Alwarpet. Says Arul Maran, “A bill will be provided to the donors after we receive their contribution.” People who wish to contribute towards this in this area can contact the AE (ward 123) at 9445190423.

RESIDENTS OF DR. RANGA ROAD COMPLEX ENHANCE THEIR RWH STRUCTURE: NEW IDEA

By Our Staff Reporter

also enter the recharge well pollut- ing the groundwater. After a lot of research, this result seemed achiev- able when we found this method in a Thamizh newspaper,” says Nagala- tha, a resident of this complex. At a cost of Rs. 20,000 per recharge well, the residents are constructing two recharge wells. And four collection chambers – two for each recharge well. In this technique, water is first led to the collection chamber. “The minute dust particles will get sedimented here. After that, it goes to the recharge well where further filtration takes place,” she says. A recharge well is constructed at a depth of 5 ft. A 4-inch PVC pipe will be sunk in the middle of the recharge well (as shown in picture) at a depth of 13 ft. The opening of the pipe will have a cap, and a mesh filter with slits to take the water in. Around the pipe pebbles of different sizes will be filled throughout the well. “Most of the impurities will get filtered as the water passes through the layers. This method will also require less maintenance,” she says. To know more details about this RWH technique contact Nagalatha at 9841672632 or their plumber Vijayakumar at 9840467996.

This complex with 16 families already has a RWH system in place. Parvathy, a resident says they revived an old well at their backyard two years ago and diverted the rain- water from the 4000 sq. ft. rooftop to this well after passing it through a filter chamber. Now, in addition to recharge wells, they are constructing collec- tion chambers to improve the filtra- tion of rainwater. “For a long time, we were search- ing for a suitable RWH model that would filter both large and small- sized particles, including plastic bags and muck that come with rainwater. Rhoda Alex is a creative spirit. She enjoys shooting

Music played at weddings at
Corporation hall is too loud
I
met her after ages at a Madras Day talk in late August.
A
lot was exchanged and in the middle of it all, I got to
understand that she had assisted a team that had done some
creative work in the run up to Chennai city’s application to
UNESCO to be recognised as a Creative City.
The city got that honour in late 2017. And it was a badge
of
pride because many cities around the world have been
recognised for their music or design or arts or literature.
Chennai chose Music and for obvious reasons. After all,
We, the residents of Pushpavanam Colony
on Dr. Ranga Road have a serious pollution
problem. During the wedding season, the noise
from the loudspeakers at the Chennai Corpora-
tion kalyana mandapam on C. P. Ramaswamy
Road is extremely loud, blasts on to the road
and local colonies and continues beyond
10.30 p.m. Local police must check the hosts of
these events and inform the mantap’s manager
to control the sound.
it
is home to one of, if not the biggest music festival which
- Jayashree Aravind
goes by the name of the December Season - a time when a
thousand-plus concerts are held at dozens of venues,
featuring the best, the vidwans and the young talents.
Those who made the UNESCO proposal also highlighted
the city’s film and gaana music heritage and popularity.
And rightly so.
To mark this milestone, The Music Academy sponsored

special postal cover and rightly got a visual of its landmark
auditorium on to the face of that cover.
Overflowing waste bins,
encroaching hawkers:
South Mada Street
I would like to thank the Corporation AE
of ward 173 for immediately attending to our
complaint regarding a pothole that was not
closed completely after civic work. It posed
serious threat to motorists
- Kalpana Krishnakumar, MRC Nagar
With that the ‘celebration’ was over. But should that be?
Having earned a badge, I would think that an effort must
be made to highlight what the city stands for.
Fears of seniors: traffic at two
busy junctions
In the past few weeks, I have noticed that the Times of
India newspaper has been hosting concerts in some city
parks and their promotionals and advertisements carry the
Creative City logo and that of Chennai Corporation - it was
the formal applicant for the UNESCO badge.
Garbage bins opposite Sri Velleeswarar
Temple on South Mada Street, Mylapore are
always over flowing. And the place stinks.
The bins do not have covers. They are mis-
used by hawkers. Also, since hawkers and
shops use up pavement space pedestrians are
pushed on to the road.
- S. Krishnamurthi, Mylapore
I
strained my eyes to get a good look at the logo and
wasn’t impressed at all - it does not reflect they city’s music
and seems to have been created in a hurry. What Rhoda later
shared with me, her logo creatives would have been very
appropriate here.
Corporation space on Luz

The Chennai Corporation school space
now lying vacant on Luz Avenue may be put
The Times of India event in city parks offers all kinds of
music - electronic, classical, gaana, fusion. Music presented
by young artistes of the city. A dash of dance was also thrown
in one weekend in Anna Nagar. While this may offer light
entertainment, I don’t see a real purpose here, save for the
newspaper exploring an avenue to gain more readers.
to use as space for extra curricular activities.
During our association meeting, members
felt that it can be put to better use:
-
Have a shuttle court or basketball court.
As senior citizens living on TTK Road,
very often we find it difficult to walk down to
Narada Gana Sabha and to the other side of
TTK Road because the traffic flow is thick all
the time. A speed breaker can be provided near
Konica Color Lab; this would hopefully slow
down the vehicles passing by. Another junction
that people like us feel afraid to negotiate is
at the junction of Oliver Road - Karpagambal
Avenue - P. S. Sivaswamy Salai. Eversince the
two-way system was reintroduced the traffic is
heavy and continuous; one recent day we saw a
school child almost getting knocked down.
- Dr Rohini Krishnan, Alwarpet
Get volunteers to take tuitions for under-
privileged children.
-
Praise for Vyjayanthimala Bali
-
I
would like to see Chennai Corporation be an active cata-
lyst in holding up the Creative City badge. And I see the 2019
December Season an opportunity to tap into.
Raise the wall so that the space is not
used for anti social activities
We hope officers of Chennai Corporation
come forward to discuss this.
- Padmini Rajagopal, Luz Avenue
Dancer Vyjanthimala Bali fully deserves all
kinds of awards and praise. Her contribution to
Bharatanatyam plus her contribution in cinema
deserves high praise.
- M. K. Subramanian, USA
So you have sabhas hosting concerts. If you got them to
display prominently the Creative City logo on their tickets,
invites, brochures and backdrops, rasikas would reinforce
the stature of the city and newbies would want to know more.
So this is the tourist season too. If you got hotels and tour
operators, airports and rail stations, Chennai Metro and Ola
and Uber to hold up the Creative City logo and also lead
people to a website that highlights where the music is
playing, the buzz can get going.
So this city’s music is diverse; not just classical Carnatic.
Curate four weekends of film and gaana music concerts
across the city. They need not be the A. R. Rahman-kind
of
jamborees.
To get all this up and running there has to be passionate
catalyst. Chennai Corporation, which applied for and earned
the badge for our city must be that.

Fazil Badrudeen, one of the promoters says that the cryother- apy treatment involves exposing the body to sub-zero temperatures in the range of -120 °C to – 180 °C for a short period of time. “During

in sports, anti-aging, and fat loss. It also provides physiological benefits like improved sleep and re- duction in stress levels,” says Fazil. Two types of treatment – whole body cryotherapy and target- ed localised cryotherapy - are offered here. The whole body cryo- therapy requires one to stand in a cryo cham- ber that the team has brought in from Poland. It provides the cooling effect through liquid nitrogen vapors. “Most of the body except the neck and head region will be exposed to the vapours for 3 minutes. While stand- ing in the chamber, men can wear shorts and women can wear a tank top and shorts apart from gloves and socks. A technician/therapist will be

there for assistance,” he says. Localised cryotherapy involves exposing a particular body part like shoulder, back or hamstrings to relieve pain in that region. Fazil says the therapy helps in releasing hormones like seratonin, dopamine, and endorphins in the brain, that in turn helps in improving physiological well being and pain relief. “Also, after each session when our body comes back to its original tempera- ture, 600 – 800 calories are burnt,” he says. The center also provides facials through the same process. “An hour of cryo glow session can help in reducing pore size, increase collagen production and im- prove blood flow,” he says. This treatment is not advisable for people with medical conditions like can- cer, diabetes, skin injuries, bladder issues, heart-related issues and other major health issues. “We talk to our clients and check their health condi- tion before treating them. We also have an advisory board of doctors for consultation,” he says. At 22, Musiri Subrama- niam Road, Mylapore. Open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Ph: 48520044, 9710555505.

Jamdani clothes at new store in Alwarpet

By Our Staff Reporter

Dvaa – Tales Untold, a clothing line that specialises in Jamdani clothes recently opened at C. P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet. Chennai-based couple Seethai and Prem are the promoters of this business. They say they opened the store with the aim of reviving the traditional art of Jamdani weaving and to provide employment opportunities to weavers who practise this technique traditionally. “I design the clothes with modern cuts, motifs, hues, and silhouettes in such a way that they stand out in our traditional handwoven Jamdani,” says Seethai, a fashion designer who has graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Chennai. Her husband Prem handles the marketing and back-end processing of the business. The duo say that the fabric is sourced from traditional weavers of Bengal. Once Seethai finalises the designs, the dresses are made at their manufacturing unit in Koyambedu. So what does ‘Tales Untold’ stand for? Says Prem, “We are also keen to tell the stories of these artisans and of the stages of weaving Jamdani. We intend to frame their stories using pictures and exhibit them at our store.” Kurtis, short tops, pants made of Khadi cotton and handwoven Jamdani are available here. Also, ajrak, shibori, and dobu kurtis are on sale. The price of a Jamdani top starts from Rs.2800. This store is at Chennai Corpora- tion Complex, 77, C. P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet. Open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on all days. Ph: 8454913545.
