TALK: SITTANNAVASAL
HERITAGE
A talk on Sittannavasal by
R. Gopu is to be held on Oct.5,
5.30 p.m. at Arkay Centre, Luz.
Open to all. The Pudukkottai
region in Tamil Nadu has a great
Jaina tradition.  Sittannavasal near
Pudukkottai has some of the earliest
frescoes in South India. The paint-
ings of Sittannavasal, dating to the
ninth century in the Pandya king-
dom, are of classicism and historical
significance comparable to the
Buddhist art of Ajanta and Hindu
art in Thanjavur Brihadeesvar-
am. The paintings of Sittannavasal
are barely visible now thanks to the
ravage of time. The talk will intro-
duce Sittannavasal and its historical
monuments, ranging over several
centuries, including prehistory.

n THE ARTS
MUSIC IN THE PARK
The music of the ongoing Navaratri
festival floated around gently in the verdant
spaces of Nageswara Rao Park in Luz on
Friday morning.
A concert, ‘mike-less’ was underway in
the Chess Square zone. 13-year-old Arvind
Balaji launched the three-day Navarathri
special Kutcheri in the Park organised by
Sundaram Finance; this is an annual feature
for the season. Arvind was accompanied on
the violin by Mugundan Samraj and on the
mridangam by Sai Srivats R. Kamath.
The concert series continues on the
weekend, starting at 7 a.m. and on for an
hour.
CHAMBER CONCERT
Musiri Chamber hosts a vocal Carnatic
music concert by Aditya Prakash on Oct.6,
4.01 p.m. onwards. It is held in a house,
with rasikas asked to sit on the floor.

SITA AND RAM/ STORY
RETOLD
It’s the story of Sita and Ram again at
this story-telling evening; about them falling

festival is dedicated to Crazy Mohan and S.

Dr. V. Umamaheswaran, a longtime
resident of Fourth Trust Cross Street,
Mandaveli passed
away on September 5
at the age of 97.
He was a veterinary
doctor who retired as
professor of surgery
from Madras
Veterinary College.
After complet-
ing his schooling at P. S. High School in
the 1930s, he graduated from the Madras
Veterinary College, Vepery and then trained
in veterinary surgery at Tierartzliche Hochs-
chule in Hanover, Germany in the late 1950s,
writing his thesis in the German language.
Since his return, he taught at Madras
Veterinary College, combining hospital
clinical practice as well as teaching and
research to which he made several original
contributions. In his later years, he served
as honorary vet at the Animal Welfare Board
(Government of India) and went around the
city to treat animals.
Said his daughter, “Many recall his
selfless service to alleviate the sufferings of
animals. Milkmen around this place remem-
ber him as the only doctor who was available
at call any time day or night to treat cows and
buffaloes. He was the only horse specialist in
Chennai during the height of his professional
years.”
“Besides treating pet animals like dogs
and cats, he had treated elephants, tigers,
bears and sheep,” added his daughter.
The Alumni Association of Tamil Nadu
Veterinary and Animal Sciences University
presented him the Lifetime Achievement
Award in 2013 .

He was awarded the Certificate of Merit
by the Mylapore Academy for his services to
the cause of animals.
He was a member of Max Mueller Bhavan,
Chennai for many years.
Uma Maheshwaran is survived by three
daughters and a son.The family can be

Film producer S. Sriram of Aalayam
Productions passed away on Sept. 4 after a
brief illness. He was in
his mid-60s.

Aalayam Productions. 
Aalayam started out
with films like
K. Subash’s ‘Chatri-
yan’ (1990), starring Vijayakant, a film
considered to be among the best thrillers to
come out of Tamil cinema.
Mani Ratnam’s ‘Thiruda Thiruda’ was
also made under the same banner. The two
of them made a few more films together,
including the blockbuster ‘Bombay’, before
parting ways.
Sriram continued to produce films under
the Aalayam banner. The last big budget film
produced by the company was ‘Samurai‘ 
starring Vikram in the lead.
Sriram is survived by his wife Nalini
Sriram, a well-known costume designer, and
son, Nikhil.

For kolu dolls hawker Devi,

the festival may not bring
much money but it breaks
her monotonous life

For 50-year-old kolu doll seller Devi, it’s not only

about selling the dolls. “It’s more about meeting
people and having a chat with my regular customers,”
she says. Devi claims that she has been selling kolu
dolls in Mylapore for 40 years. She resides in
Perungalathur.
This year, her stall is at the gate of ICICI Bank
complex in North Mada Street. 
On the eve of every Navarathri season, she and
her husband, Balaiah buy dolls from traditional kolu
doll makers of Madurai, Usilampatti and nearby
areas.
“This business goes on for a month till Ayudha
pooja. Then, we spend the whole year selling fruits
in suburban trains. It is so hectic that we rarely get
time to share our thoughts with people,” she says.
Navarathri though creates a break from her
monotonous life. “People talk very briefly as they
window-shop but even if they recognise me or ask me
how I am, it makes me happy,” she says.
She says business has been low this year. “Clay
dolls are gradually fading away,” says Devi. People
have shifted to buying papier-mache dolls as they
are less in weight and easier to transport to foreign
countries. 
“We take loans and invest over two lakhs to buy
the dolls. We barely make a profit of Rs.25,000, and
spend the rest of the year repaying loans. Similar is
the case of most hawkers here,” says Devi.
But she is happy her trusted clients land up.
“Regulars continue to buy from me as they believe
I have kairasi,”she says. Shopper Geetha from
T. Nagar who has just packed a few bommais here,
affirms it.

Deputy CM visits Valleeswaran Thottam
where old blocks are to make way for new

Residents in the tiny apartments, some
200 sq ft in area, built in late 1980s and
slowly coming apart in Valleeswaran
Thottam in R. A. Puram have told the
deputy chief minister, O. Paneerselvam
who went around a small area of this
colony on last Friday that they have two
issues to highlight.
They are happy the state is going to
demolish and rebuild all the old blocks built
under the state’s Slum Clearance Board
watch. But they told Paneerselvam not to
build beyond three floors although the plan

family because many elders will not be able
to access the houses far above since the
blocks will not have lifts. Pannerselvam
spent some 45 minutes in this congested
colony, talking to residents and getting feed-
back. There are over ten blocks here.
Residents who reside here and have valid
documents will be given a fixed sum of cash
to meet their rentals while the construction
is on – it may take 18 months.
Similar plans are in place in land which
the Slum Board developed some decades
ago in Mylapore – Kapali Thotam and  
Visalakshi Thottam being two of them.
While Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance
Board (TNSCB) has plans to reconstruct
the dilapidated Slum Board tenements in
many parts of Mylapore, residents are
raising some issues in public.
A few weeks ago, officials of TNSCB
pasted notices on the doors of flats in
blocks that were going to be demolished.
While deputy chief minister O. Paneer-
selvam inspected Valleeswaran Thottam
at R. A. Puram that is set to be demolished
soon, the residents of Kapali Thotam, a
TNSCB colony near the Thirumyilai MRTS
station (where small flats are also slated
for demolition) are seeking a discussion
before plans unfold. They have pasted
posters at public places.
The posters list the requirements which
the residents wish to be considered before
the reconstruction of their colonies.
Krishnakumar, a resident of Kapali
Thotam said, “We want the officials to
hold a meeting and listen to our concerns
before they start the reconstruction work.”

Abiramapuram resident contributes for
recharge wells at public spaces

rain water harvesting (RWH),
Abhiramapuram resident Vasanthi
Rajiv donated Rs.36000 to the local
Chennai Corporation unit (ward 123)
for the construction of recharge wells
on roadsides.
“For some time, I have been
urging my neighbours to construct
recharge wells on our street. But
there was not much water logging
here. Hence, I decided to contribute
towards RWH systems in water
stagnant public spaces in my neigh-
bourhood,” says Vasanthi, who has

Avenue, Abhiramapuram.

are enhancing the rainwater har-
vesting (RWH) structure on their
premises.
This complex with 16 families
already has a RWH system in place.
Parvathy, a resident says they
revived an old well at their backyard
two years ago and diverted the rain-
water from the 4000 sq. ft. rooftop to
this well after passing it through a
filter chamber.
Now, in addition to recharge
wells, they are constructing collec-
tion chambers to improve the filtra-
tion of rainwater.
“For a long time, we were search-
ing for a suitable RWH model that
would filter both large and small-
sized particles, including plastic bags
and muck that come with rainwater.
Most often, we have seen that they

first led to the collection chamber.

sedimented here. After that, it goes
to the recharge well where further
filtration takes place,” she says.
A recharge well is constructed
at a depth of 5 ft. A 4-inch PVC pipe
will be sunk in the middle of the
recharge well (as shown in picture)
at a depth of 13 ft.
The opening of the pipe will have
a cap, and a mesh filter with slits to
take the water in. Around the pipe
pebbles of different sizes will be
filled throughout the well.
“Most of the impurities will get
filtered as the water passes through
the layers. This method will also
require less maintenance,” she says.

Rhoda Alex is a creative spirit. She enjoys shooting
photographs, designing logos and covers of books and
supporting heritage.
I met her after ages at a Madras Day talk in late August.
A lot was exchanged and in the middle of it all, I got to
understand that she had assisted a team that had done some
creative work in the run up to Chennai city’s application to
UNESCO to be recognised as a Creative City.
The city got that honour in late 2017. And it was a badge
of pride because many cities around the world have been
recognised for their music or design or arts or literature.
Chennai chose Music and for obvious reasons. After all,
it is home to one of, if not the biggest music festival which
goes by the name of the December Season - a time when a
thousand-plus concerts are held at dozens of venues,
featuring the best, the vidwans and the young talents.
Those who made the UNESCO proposal also highlighted
the city’s film and gaana music heritage and popularity.
And rightly so.
To mark this milestone, The Music Academy sponsored
a special postal cover and rightly got a visual of its landmark
auditorium on to the face of that cover.
With that the ‘celebration’ was over. But should that be?
Having earned a badge, I would think that an effort must
be made to highlight what the city stands for.
In the past few weeks, I have noticed that the Times of
India newspaper has been hosting concerts in some city
parks and their promotionals and advertisements carry the
Creative City logo and that of Chennai Corporation - it was
the formal applicant for the UNESCO badge.
I strained my eyes to get a good look at the logo and
wasn’t impressed at all - it does not reflect they city’s music
and seems to have been created in a hurry. What Rhoda later
shared with me, her logo creatives would have been very
appropriate here.
The Times of India event in city parks offers all kinds of
music - electronic, classical, gaana, fusion. Music presented
by young artistes of the city. A dash of dance was also thrown
in one weekend in Anna Nagar. While this may offer light
entertainment, I don’t see a real purpose here, save for the
newspaper exploring an avenue to gain more readers.
I would like to see Chennai Corporation be an active cata-
lyst in holding up the Creative City badge. And I see the 2019
December Season an opportunity to tap into.
So you have sabhas hosting concerts. If you got them to
display prominently the Creative City logo on their tickets,
invites, brochures and  backdrops, rasikas would reinforce
the stature of the city and newbies would want to know more.

To get all this up and running there has to be passionate
