OBJECTIVES

This activity aims to let students:

1. Design and carry out an experiment to reinforce their knowledge about osmosis and
diffusion;
2. Formulate a prediction or hypothesis before the actual experiment;
3. Conduct the experiment and record observations;
4. Interpret and evaluate results; and
5. Draw a conclusion and make connections.

MECHANICS OF THE ACTIVITY

1. Come up with a project title by brainstorming and planning. The project must be
feasible. (Materials are available, and the project can be conducted outside the
laboratory or classroom).
Include a statement of the problem.
2. Discuss how you could test your ideas concerning the activity and choose a hypothesis
that your group would like to test.
3. Write your hypothesis
4. List the materials to be used in your experiment.
5. Plan your experimental procedure and describe the steps specific steps in order.
6. Make a data sheet to record your observations.
7. Carry out the experiment and record your observations.
8. Make an analysis and interpretation of the results.
9. Draw your conclusion/s and make connections.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

1. Document the activity from planning (today) to the actual conduction of the experiment.
2. Results of the project will be presented next meeting before the quiz.
3. Refer to the rubric for additional guidance.
4. Attach this page to your results.
TITLE OF THE PROJECT: The Effect of Different NaCl Concentration to Solanum Tuberosum
(Potato)

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

The purpose pf this study is to carry out a successful experiment about Osmosis which
can make other people understand what is and how does these really work. The purpose of this
study is to answer the following question :

1. What would happen to the product when it is soaked in water with higher salt
concentration and lower salt concentration?

HYPOTHESIS:

 This study is designed to assess the hypothesis that when we soaked the potatoes into
waters with different level of salt concentration, the lower the salt concentration is the more
that the potatoes will increase in size while on other hand, the higher the salt concentration
is the potatoes will decrease in length.

MATERIALS

 Beaker (5x) (200 ml)

 Potato (2pcs)
 Salt (15 grams)
 Water (1L)
 Stirring rod
 Cutter
 Ruler

PROCEDURE

1. Cut 10 pieces of potato with the exact same size.

2. In five different beaker/container put a different amount of salt (e. no salt in the
first container, 1 tsp of salt in the second container, 2 tsp of salt in the third
container and so on..) and mix it thoroughly.
3. Put two potatoes in each container and leave them for 20 minutes.
4. Remove the carrots from the containers.
5. Measure the length of the carrot as accurate as possible.
6. List down the current length and subtract the original length (before soaking it in
a water with salt) from it.
7. Create your illustration.
OBSERVATIONS

Based on the experiment that we have done, the lower the salt concentration is the more
it will increase in length, it is showed in the graph below with how much did the length increased
base on the salt concentration.

And the higher the salt concentration is the more it will decrease in length. It will be
showed in the graph below and how much did the length decreased.
ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

This study presents findings, analysis and interpretation of osmosis through out
experiment on the potato whose main objective is to make of easier for others to understand what
osmosis is and the effect of different concentration in a certain thing. We think we successfully
carried out the experiment and are able to show how did the potatoes reacted to different salt
concentration.

CONCLUSION/S

We therefore conclude that the higher the salt concentration, the more it changes a potato
strip. On the first part of our experiment, the potato strips has the same length and width. As seen
on our photo reports, the potato strips soaked in the water with lower salt concentration got longer
by mm, while the ones soaked with higher concentration either stayed the same or decreased in
length. It is also observable that the potato strips soaked with higher concentration was softer.

CONNECTIONS/GENERALIZATIONS
Osmosis is the process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a
semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one, thus
equalizing the concentrations on each side of the membrane. You will notice once the potato gets
big that the ones immersed in concentrated solution is much softer and the ones immersed in the
lower concentrated water are more turgid. In our experiment the osmosis happened because the
potato has a lower water potential and the solution which is the water without a salt who has a
higher water potential enters in the potato so that's the explanation why the potato gets bigger.
