Introduction I

Background of the Study

With the development of new communication technologies at the beginning sites,

Facebook became one of the most popular social network sites all around the globe.

Facebook has been widely used by people of different ages and gender.

The occurrence of so many different social networking sites like facebook generation

has both positive and negative impacts. As for positive side, they have become essential tools

for mankind to communicate virtually with anyone regardless of the distance. However in a

research conducted by Moeller (2016), she found out that the rapidly growing new forms of

communications, which are social networking sites like Facebook, have resulted in the dying

of interpersonal, or communication skills.

Staying in touch on Facebook is so easy that it can inhibit some people from

interacting in traditional ways. For young children that need to interact face to face with

others to learn social norms, communicating through Facebook alone can prevent them from

developing social skills.

For the 4th straight year, the Philippines is tops in worldwide social media use. The

Philippines also beats Thailand this year for most time spent online. A report by creative

agency We Are Social and social media management platform Hoot suite showed Filipinos

spend the most time on the Facebook. The “Digital 2019: Global Digital Overview” showed

Filipinos spend an average of 10 hours, 2 minutes on the internet via any device. Even though

Facebook is by now used by a much wider variety of users, university students are still its

“biggest fans”. Results from a recent paper Ellison et al. (2007) reported that 94% of student

are active Facebook users, spending 60-90 minutes online each day communicating with their
Friends List of 150-200 people. Similarly, Wiley and Sisson (2006; as cited in Pempek et al,

2009) conducted a large survey on student from universities in the developing countries

indicated that 91% of student use the Facebook.

Facebook is largest social network become so popular for young people that

they hardly use email or other way of communication. Currently Facebook is used by many

people to connect with their friends and relatives here in Davao City. Though it can unite

people with common interest and/or beliefs through groups and other pages, and reunite lost

family members and friends. According to consumer reports survey, there are 7.5 million

children under 13 with accounts and 5 million under 10 , violating the sites terms of service

here in Davao City, and show that there are a lot of student who are spending much of their

time in Facebook. Davao City had 85 to 95 percent of the student who used Facebook.

Facebook is largest social network become so popular for young people that they hardly use

email or other way of communication. Currently Facebook is used by many people to connect

with their friends and relatives here in Davao City.

Facebook has become the central facilitator for daily communication with peer,

family and acquaintance. It is affecting out relationships and decrease the quality of inter –

personal communication. Improvement of language an impairment of communication skills

caused by the extensive use of social media furthermore people often use shortened versions

of words in order to type and send their messages as quickly as possible and so on completely

ruins the grammar and syntax sometimes people tend to forget that they are neglecting the

beauty of language when they are online busy with social media specifically Facebook.

Review of Related Literature II

In recent years, social networking sites (Facebook) have gained phenomenal

popularity among youth. The birth of Facebook in 2004 has communicates develop and

maintain friendship. Facebook, the most inexpensive and convenient way to communicate

with a social network service and dubbed as the worlds most well-liked social network

service today has grown to an estimated 1 billion users since its launch in 2004 (Ellison et al,

2012) Philippines, there are about 30 million active users as of 2012.Making it as the 8th

country in the world with high number of use (HEW, K.F 2011).

Students use Facebook to maintain their former network of high school friends and

also to build and sustain bonds with new friends on their campuses (Ellison et al., 2007,

2011; Junco &Mastrodicasa, 2007). They use Facebook to initiate and maintain friendships

and to seek out new information about those in their social circle (Ellison et al., 2011).

The practice of social information seeking is related to student’s perceived levels of

social capital (the resources obtained from their relationships and interactions such as

emotional support (Ellison et al., 2011). Social capital is related to improved self-esteem,

fewer psychological and behavioral problems, and improved quality of life (McPherson et al.,

2014). Furthermore, increased social capital can help students feel more of a connection to

their institution, which is related to more positive educational outcomes

(Pascarella&Terenzini, 2005).

As students’ transition into and move through college, they have to develop new skills

in order to be successful (Upcraft, Gardner, Barefoot, & Associates, 2005). Some of these
skills are commucaiton skills such as learning how to engage in progressively more difficult

levels of communicaiton work. For instance, as first year students transition to college, they

need to learn how to manage their time so that they spend an appropriate amount of time

studying for their courses (Upcraft et al., 2005).

Communication skills are equally important for student success. An important

Communication task for new college students is the building and maintenance of friendships

at their new institution (Pascarella&Terenzini, 2005; Tinto, 1993; Upcraft et al.,

2005).Facebook has been the most researched platform for teaching and learning

(Manca&Ranieri, 2013; Tess, 2013). Manca and Ranieri (2013) discovered 23 empirical

studies of using Facebook as a learning environment. Manca and Ranieri (2013) identified

five main educational uses of Facebook: ). Support class discussions and helping students

engage in collaborative learning; 2) Developing content; 3) Sharing educational resources; 4)

Delivering content to expose students to extra-curricular resources; and 5) to support self-

managed learning.

They note that only four studies have examined how Facebook relates to learning

outcomes and found positive impacts on learning outcomes such as improvement in English

communication skills, knowledge, and vocabulary (Manca&Ranieri, 2013). Facebook has

been used as a replacement for learning and course management system (LCMS) discussion

boards. For instance, Hurt et al. (2012) examined student outcomes from and preferences for

Facebook use.
They assigned students to either use Facebook or the learning management system

(LMS) in two courses. They found that the Facebook group reported better educational

outcomes than the LMS group. They also found that 43% of the LMS users said they would

have contributed more if they had used Facebook; while only 12% of Facebook users said

they would have participated more with a switch to the LMS. Hollyhead, Edwards, and Holt

(2012) found that students preferred to create their own Facebook groups when no official-

course related ones were available instead of using the LMS.

Schroeder and Greenbowe (2009) found that while only 41% of a Chemistry class

joined the course Facebook group, the number of posts on Facebook were 400% greater than

on the course management system. Further-more, they reported that postings on the Facebook

group “raised more complex topics and generated more detailed replies” than postings on the

CMS (Schroeder &Greenbowe, 2009). Research on the relation between Facebook use and

communication skills has yielded mixed results. Pasek et al. (2009) found there was no

relation between Facebook use and grades. Kolek and Saunders (2008) found that there were

no differences in overall grade point average (GPA) between users and non-users of

Facebook. Kirschner and Karpinski (2010), on the other hand, found that Facebook users

reported a lower mean GPA than non-users; additionally, Facebook users reported studying

fewer hours per week than non-users (Kirschner&Karpinski, 2010). Lastly, Junco (2012a)

found that number of logins and time spent on Facebook were related to lower overall GPA;

however, sharing links and checking to see what friends are up to were positively related to

GPA. Junco (2012a) also found that there was a negative relation between time spent on

Facebook and time spent preparing for class. There are a number of possible reasons for the

disparate findings among studies. The studies may have been limited by the measures used to

evaluate Facebook use and/or grades. These studies may have also been limited due to their
sampling designs (Junco, 2012a). For instance, Facebook use was measured in different ways

such as through a measure of time spent on the site (Junco, 2012a) or by splitting users and

non-users (Kirschner&Karpinski, 2010). Additionally, grades were measured either through

self-report (Kirschner&Karpinski, 2010; Kolek& Saunders, 2008; Pasek et al., 2009) or

through data collected from the university registrar (Junco, 2012a). Furthermore, there may

be differences in how students use Facebook and how this relates to communication skills

outcomes, a factor examined in only one of the studies (Junco, 2012a).

Communication, at its simplest, is the act of transferring information from one place

to another. It may be vocally (using voice), written (using printed or digital media such as

books, magazines, websites or emails), visually (using logos, maps, charts or graphs) or non-

verbally (using body language, gestures and the tone and pitch of voice. Communication

skills is the ability to communicate information accurately, clearly and as intended, is a vital

life skill and something that should not be overlooked. It’s never too late to work on your

communication skills and by doing so, you may well find that you improve your quality of

life.

Students communicate with each other with different immediate messaging,

video, mail, picture, quotation and comment. This indicatesus that Facebook has wealthy

contents. Students choose Facebook, due to the factthey count on that fb is a powerful

communique device.Additionally Facebook usersare international. Distances are shortened

through facebook. Customers transfer their social capital toFacebook, after which they could

reveal their environments on this virtual global. So,users can engage in their surroundings

without problems on Facebook. This aspect increases the uses of Facebook. Facebook make

contributions to inter-personal verbal exchange with its content. Students prefer fb to talk

with their friends (T. Sevük, 2013).

For such populations, membersof one’s Facebook social network and face-to-face

social network tend to consistof many of a similar people. However, the will to speak with

othersusing Facebook versus face-to-face interaction probably stems

from alternative wants such

as convenience and alternative factors that are distinctive to social networking sites

(e.g.,miscommunication, or commenting on another individual’s wall posts or status).

Itis attention-grabbing to notice that the amount of hours that students

spent exploitation Facebook waspositively correlative with depression within the gift study.

However, this finding is probably goingrelated to

what folks do whereas exploitation Facebook instead of the number of your

time theyspend exploitation it, and it's going to underscore the importance of assessing

motives (includingnonsocial motives) for Facebook and face-to-face support in

future analysis, as wellas specializing in that motives is also joined to depression. As an

example, people

who use Facebook for passing time over social communication could be additional depressed

(Wright, K. B et al. 2012).

In the recent years, the utilization of emoticons in text-based and computer-mediated

communications has gained plenty of recognition. Although emoticons (a combination of

punctuation marks and letters) 1st began as an illustration of facial features, they need over

the years been remodeled to currently embrace graphical representations of a spread of

things(both static and animated). The usage of emoticons and their

interpretation disagree from one person to a different, looking on factors like gender, age and

culture. Facebook may be a platform wherever individuals across the world communicate,

share opinions and connect with one another. The investigator, thus, seeks to know whether
or not emoticons have the power to infuse the text-based computer-mediated-

communications on Facebook with the richness and legitimacy of face-to-face

interactions, Associate to gain an understanding of however these totally different teams use

and interpret emoticons. A sample size of 139 was selected victimization the snowball

sampling technique(CYW. Amanda 2013).
