BOOK REVIEW REQUIREMENT

PLEASE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE INSTRUCTIONs. STRICTLY FOLLOW!

1. Choose 2 classic novels (1st and 2nd semester) as part of your English 10 requirement
S.Y 2019-2020.

2. Make it sure you present first the PHYSICAL BOOK for checking. Once it is approved,
pass the title and author in ¼ sheet of paper to your teacher.

3. Your chosen book must not be the same with your classmates during the semester. If
any chance, try to change or find another book and you may use it for the next book
review.

4. READ, READ, AND READ your chosen classic novel.

5. For book review, STRICTLY NO COPY & PASTE or to PLAGIARIZE (take the work
or an idea of someone else and use it for own w/out permission) the content from
INTERNET or any BOOKs. Again, refer to number 4 reminder.

6. Identify and answer the following guide questions about the book story. Write your
answer (it could be HANDWRITTEN or ENCODED as long as you complete and provided
the content) in an OLD/USED MAGAZINE w/ Plastic cover. Be CREATIVE!

7. Try your very best to come up with your OWN OUTPUT. AN ORIGINAL WORK IS
WORTH MORE THAN A COPY.

8. Here are the CRITERIA for your book review:

author, genre, summary, favorite part, and overall recommendation.)
SENTENCE STRUCTURE (IDEA FLUENCY) 20%
All sentences are well constructed with varied structure on the written book
review. They flow well for the reader.
EVALUATION OF BOOK STRUCTURE 25%
in terms of back matter and content of the book.
REFLECTION AND RECOMMENDATION 20%
CREATIVITY/ORIGINALITY 10%

PART I-ABOUT THE BOOK

1. BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION-In paragraph form (4-8 sentences) basic


bibliographic information about the book. Bibliographic information means not only the
author and title but also what company published the book, what year it was published
in and any other relevant information such as the edition and if the book has been
translated, simplified or abridged.
2. BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT THE BOOK-provide a short information what
is the book all about and its purpose. Why did the author write the story/book?

3. SETTING- Describe the book's setting. Include the mood.

4. MAIN CHARACTERS OF THE STORY- Identify the characters from main to


supporting. Write descriptive sentences about each. Include both physical and
personality traits whenever possible. Describe their role in the story. How do they
affect the story? Do you empathize with them?

5. PLOT OF THE STORY- Give a brief summary of the plot. Make sure you cover all of
the major parts of the plot (intro, problems, climax, solution and ending). What are the
goals of the character? Are the goals met? Why or why not? What are the major
conflicts in the story? What type of conflicts are they? Are they resolved? How?

6. TYPE OF CONFLICT

7. SYMBOLISM- symbolic meaning attributed to natural objects or facts.

8. THEME- its underlying message, or 'big idea.' of the story like war, revenge, love,
friendship, and etc. then EXPLAIN.

9. LESSON LEARNED- what have you learned from the story?

PART II-YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES


All of the following should be addressed in PARAGRAPH FORM.

 Who was your favorite character? Why?


 Could you relate to any of the characters in the story?
 Have you ever done or felt some of the things, the characters did? Cite an example from
the story where you can relate your experiences.

PART III- YOUR OPINION


All of the following should be addressed in PARAGRAPH FORM.

 Did you like the book? What is your favourite scenario in the story? Why?
 What part of the book you didn’t like? What was it?
 If you could change something, what would it be? If you wish you could change the
ending or any part the story, what it is?
B.
 How does this work compare with others by the same author or other books in the same
genre?
C.
 What significant issues in the story that still exist today? How should one cope with such
issue?

PART IV- RECOMMENDATION


It should summarize your overall impressions of the book and bring the report to a close.

 Are you satisfied with the story? Would you recommend this book to another person?
Rate it, from 1 to 5 stars. Why?
 What type of person would like this book?
