Disney’s Ardent Obsession with the Remakes

By Areeba Aftab

By now, all of us are familiarized with the sorcery of live-action fairytales that
have been taking over the big screens since the last decade. But the live action
adaptation of the classics is not stopping any time near as this is Disney’s new
recipe for making it big on the box office. The magic sort of began with
“Maleficent”, the retelling of Sleeping Beauty with the villain’s perspective. After
Maleficent’s tremendous success, Disney started making straight-up remakes.
This strategy was also mega-hit as both, “Cinderella” and “Beauty and the Beast”
made millions at the box office.

What are the Upcoming live action remakes?

Disney is set to release live-action remake of “Winnie the Pooh” under the
direction of Marc Forster. The story will revolve around the adult Christopher
Robin who is now a businessman and whose life alters when his old pal Pooh
shows up. The film is set to release in August this year. Remakes of “The Lion
King” and “Dumbo” are also set to entertain the audience in 2019. Both of these
movies will actually be a CGI-action remake, with Beyonce featuring in “The Lion
King”.

Other anticipated remakes are of “Aladdin” and “Mulan”. Live action remake of
these classics will be released next year. Creators of both these films have opted
for a non-white cast so the adaptation can live the charm of the original. Mena
Massoud and Naomi Scott will play the leads in Aladdin, while Mulan will be
played by a Chinese actress. Other live-action remakes reaching our cinemas will
be: “The Little Mermaid”, “Snow White”, “Pinocchio”, “Peter Pan” and “Tinker
Bell”.

Why is Disney turning classics into live-action versions?

Revising the old storylines into a new movie allows more focus to be put into
animation and videography departments. Disney is working with new
technologies. Therefore, creators need to spend more time and money on
cameras and software. In this situation, remake of an already created movie is
ideal. Remake of a movie also requires little to be spent on advertisements, as the
old classic fans will automatically be interested in watching the live remake.

Is Disney Trying to Keep the Magic Alive?

Live-action remakes are a popular demand of Disney fans. At the same time,
Disney does not want the magic of its classics to die. To preserve these classics,
Disney is working on renewing them. This will not only keep the classic film’s spirit
alive but also circulate the story line through generations.

From “Alice in the Wonderland” to “Beauty and the Beast”, all Disney-classical
remakes have lived up to the expectations of the audience. Disney is ardent to do
so in the future as well while working to keep its legacy ceaseless in the
contemporary cinema.
