Objectives
● Upon completion of the module, the installer will:
• Know what the Onsite Validation (OVT) and Site History Profile (SHP) Tools are
• Know how to Access the OVT and SHPT
• Be able to identify when to use Onsite Validation Tool (OVT) vs. Site History
Profile Tool (SHPT)
• Understand the metrics used to evaluate site performance
• Understand when to use Repaired, Checked, Get Latest Stats
• Enter disposition to get sign off code
• Understand Acceptable Signal levels and Seasonal Variation
• Utilize the recommended actions to validate the site installation

What Is The Onsite Validation Tool (OVT)?
● The OVT allows the technician to obtain real time system performance
metrics at the conclusion of an installation or a repair
● The OVT provides metrics and minimum performance targets for two key
system parameters:
• Uplink Es/No
• Downlink Es/No
● The OVT provides suggestions as to what to fix should the performance
metrics come back below minimum targets
● The OVT provides the technician with a Sign Off number when the minimum
system performance targets are met
• Indicating that the technician installed or repaired the site correctly
● The OVT allows the technician to record site problems and actions taken at
the time of install or repair
• Allows tracking of “Out of Box” hardware failures real time
• Shortens corrective action time

3 H47197 7/12/2012
What Is The Site History Profile Tool (SHPT)?
● The SHPT is a graphic uplink and downlink performance history of each site
● The SHPT evaluates the performance of the 3 system links:
• Beacon
• Uplink
• Downlink

4 H47197 7/12/2012
Knowing When and How the OVT Should Be Used
● Using the OVT is recommended for all installations and repairs
● The OVT is accessed through a “tunnel” through the satellite directly to the
Yahsat “Site Diagnostic Tool” (SDT) servers for all new installations
● In addition, the OVT must be accessed over the internet for repairs
● To successfully complete an installation or repair the site, system
performance metrics must meet the minimum performance targets set by the
OVT

5 H47197 7/12/2012
Knowing When and How the SHPT Should Be Used
● This tool must be run prior to every repair

● The SHPT displays performance over a 90 day or 365 day period

● This tool requires a minimum of 48 hours after a new install to capture

performance data

● This tool determines current site conditions. It can be used to identify

defective parts, bad cabling, connectors, or an antenna that has been
incorrectly pointed. In addition you can identify water in the feed horn,
overheating, and pointing drift

● This tool also shows previous repair actions taken

OVT Performance and Quality System Metrics
● The OVT evaluates the performance and quality of the site installation by
comparing the latest measured values of key performance metrics with target
values.
● The OVT evaluates the following metrics when determining performance and
quality :
• Downlink Es/No
o Indicates Downlink signal quality
o This value should be above 20, typical value is 100
o Higher the better
• Uplink Es/No
o Uplink signal quality
o This value should be above 43, typical value is 100
o Higher the better

7 H47197 7/12/2012
SHPT Performance and Quality System Metrics
● Four metrics used to determine performance as provided in graph form:
• Signal Quality Factor (SQF)
• Uplink and downlink (Signal to Noise Ratio) Es/No
o Uplink should be above 43 and downlink should be above 20
o Typical values should be 100 for uplink and downlink
• Daily reset counts
o Number of time the unit has reset that day (Maximum: 4)
• Packet error rate

*Note: all ranges and values are for clear skies

● Each Uplink Cell is made up of 7

MICROCELLS

● The tool collects data from each site in

112 Uplink Cells a specified Uplink Cell (top left) to
determine an average value. This
value is shown in the graph as Avg.
Norm Cell UL Power and by running
SHPT it is graphically compared to the
customer’s system.
● The tool collects data from each site in
a specified Downlink Cell (bottom left)
to determine an average value. This
value is shown in the graph as the Cell
Norm SQF and by running SHPT it is
784 Downlink MicroCells graphically compared to the customer’s
system.

Seasonal Variation and Acceptable SQF Value Ranges
● Expect seasonal variation for SQF values within the same region due to
moisture content of the atmosphere of winter vs. summer
● The On-site Validation Tool’s target SQF values reflect seasonal variations

15 H47197 7/12/2012
Based on the values entered, the OVT:
• Operates in new installation mode or repair mode. The basic procedure is the same for either mode.
• Displays a new screen showing the latest recorded performance parameter values (Latest Values), target values, and for each
parameter, the difference between the latest values and the target values. This data is the basis of the validation process.
• Click on “Get Current Stats”

16 H47197 7/12/2012
Diagnostic Results

• The “Diagnosis” field will indicate overall results and “Recommended Action” will indicate any repair
actions that need to be taken
• If Diagnosis is anything but a green “OK”, there is an antenna pointing issue to be resolved
• Purple status indicated that the condition is “note-worthy”, but installer can proceed with validation
• Check the Current Values against Target Values and adjust the antenna to correct the problem
• Based on whether or not Diagnosis results call for a pointing correction, perform actions using the “get
Current Stats”, “Force Range”, Clear Terminal Stats” or “Signoff” buttons to troubleshoot antenna
pointing issues.

Importance of OVT
● Upon completion of the installation an installer is required to complete and pass the Onsite
Verification Tool (OVT) test
● This tool looks at the parameters of the current installation and ensures that all radio
frequencies (RF) receive and transmit are within tolerance
● Upon successful completion all tests will be green. If there is any red indication the OVT will
provide the installer with possible remedies

● The importance of obtaining a passing (all green) test cannot be over stated

● What happens if an installer does not repair or bring up the installation to a passing grade:
1. The customer’s service will be negatively affected.
2. Return service calls will occur until you have corrected the problem.
3. Reduced population within a beam, reducing your overall revenue.
4. Yahsat will not assist with repair of any installation that did not pass OVT. To be clear, if the
installer is unable to pass and asks for assistance, we will assist. If he does not pass and on
a later date you ask for assistance it will not be available

Examples of Specific Site Performance Profiles
● Like EKGs, no two site profiles are exactly alike. But they are similar.
● Profiles must be interpreted to identify the condition of the site and the probable
problem, if one exists
● With routine use one can develop a “knack” for identifying the probable root
cause of a system problem from the patterns of the graphs
● The following slides provide examples of good and bad performance profiles of
real sites
● The notes in these slides will help you recognize performance conditions.
● Print these slides, and / or, the Site History Profile Presentation located in the
documents section of the Installation Portal as aids when interpreting a sites
system performance BEFORE going out on a repair
● With experience, the SHPT will help you reduce time on site, return repair visits,
and cost

35 H47197 7/12/2012
Pointing vs. Bad ODU Indications
● The uplink and the downlink are basically independent systems, but share several common
elements
• Share:
o Feedhorn
o Antenna
o Polarizer
• Independent:
o Separate transmit and receive modules in the ODU
o Separate cabling
● So when both the uplink and the downlink are bad, it would indicate that the problem lies in
one of the common components
● If only the uplink or downlink is affected then the problem lies in the independent elements
• Bad transmit or bad receive but not both
• Replace ODU- since the 2 components can not be separated
● If SHPT chart shows both uplink and downlink are bad, it is probably not an ODU issue,
since the uplink and downlink probably did not go bad at the same time
● Exceptions include lightning strikes and the like, since then the uplink and downlink could
both be bad at the same time
