LEARNING GOAL: You will create a watercolor geode design.

OBJECTIVES: TLWD

• Knowledge of geodes by identifying different kinds of geodes.

• Comprehension of agate geodes by explaining its characteristics.
• Comprehension of vocabulary by discussing, defining and using the vocabulary words that they just
learned during the art making process.
• Application of design by applying design to the background.
• Application of line by apply different thickness to the lines (thick, thin).
• Application of color by applying watercolor to their agate geode design that best compliments their
artwork.
• Application of watercolor techniques by applying watercolor on wet paper (wet on wet technique)
and on dry paper (wet on dry).

DETAILED LESSON PROCEDURES:

Day 1

1. Show students a PowerPoint presentation on geodes and how they are formed.
2. I will demonstrate different watercolor techniques.
3. Students will complete the watercolor worksheet techniques.

Day 2

1. I will demonstrate how to create a geode using watercolors and salt.

2. Students will create at least 3 different geodes.

Day 4-5

1. Students will cut out the geodes.

2. Students will work on a pattern worksheet.
3. They will then create the background.
4. For the background, they can create a black or brown background using watercolors and
salt or they can create a pattern background (like zentangle) using a black sharpie.
Day 6

1. Students will glue the geodes to the background.

2. Once they are done, students will fill out an assessment and rubric sheet.

CLOSURE ACTIVITES:

Reviewing the key points of the lesson.

Previewing future lessons.
Demonstrating student’s problem-solving process.
Exhibiting student learning.

Gallery Walk: Students will walk around the room silently observing their peer’s artwork. This gives each
student the ability to see at what point in the project their classmates are on. It also helps inspire students
to try new techniques.

Pair/Share: Talk amongst each other: What challenges did you face today and how did you overcome it?
