I. Introduction
This article entitled Exploring the Maritime Words: An Introduction. It written by
I Wayan Dirgeyasa, he is the lecturer of English Department of Faculty
languages and Arts at State University of Medan and Maritime Academy
Indonesia Medan. It published in English Language Teaching and Research,
Volume 2(1). It published on Desember 2018. The ISSN number of the article is
2614-1108.
II. Summary
Maritime English (ME) is the language used in maritime world or maritime
industry worldwide. In line with Nomizura, ME is defined as:
a. The language used to communicate in all maritime-specific situation,
on-board, ship-to-ship, and ship-to-shore.
b. It includes maritime specific terminology-navigation, on-board
operations, roles and responsibilities, health and safety, emergencies.
c. English which has been simplified for use by seafarers of all
nationalities.
d. Maritime English has been codified by the International Maritime
Organization (IMO) as Standard Marine Communication Phrases
(SMCP)
e. General English language skills need to be good enough to combine with
SMCP to achieve consistent and clear communication at sea.
IV. Conclusion
This article is discussed about Maritime English (ME), which Maritim
English is the language used in maritime world or maritime industry
worldwide. This article consist of some good information about ESP
particularly in Maritime field. In this article, the writer explore information
about English in Maritime field, in terms of Spelling and figure, grammatical
patterns, and vocabulary usages.
Based on the explanation above, this articles is very useful for the
readers to improve their knowledge about ESP particularly relate to Maritime
English. Other researcher can use this article as their reference to support their
research which is related to Maritime English.
