WASTE MANAGEMENT

Nowadays, waste segregation is one of the major problems of the Philippines. A lot of
programs where been implemented to diminish the problem on waste, still this dilemma won’t able
to solve because of the continuous growing of population on town. There are lots of solid waste
management campaigns done by the different barangay officials including the Municipal office
but until today this problem is still a problem. In order to educate the community on proper waste
management, television, radio, internet and newspaper where used as a channel of information
dissemination but the netizens ignored it.

With the different disasters and calamities happened in our community this becomes the
reflection on what people done in the environment. But still, people are hard headed; they are not
segregating their waste and the worst is they just threw their waste anywhere. Also, because of this
dilemma and personalities of the community the act on solid waste management is neglected.

In 2000, Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act was enacted
to provide a framework for managing the growing problem of solid waste in the country.
Furthermore, the Republic Act 9003 gives prime importance to the roles of Local Government
Units (LGU’s) in managing their respective solid wastes. Moreover, the aim of this act is to ensure
the protection of public health and the environment and to utilize environmentally-sound methods
that maximize the utilization of valuable resources. It includes the practice of reduce, reuse,
recycle. In addition, the aim of this act is to ensure the proper segregation, collection, transport,
storage, treatment and disposal of solid waste through the formulation and adoption of the best
environmental practice in ecological waste management excluding incineration.

I realized that segregating our trash really contributes in minimizing waste and it also helps
our waste management system in handling all of the trash in the community. I think that the NSTP
class about proper waste management made me rethink my actions and gave me new information
on how I can help minimize pollution in the environment. I realized that I need to be more cautious
in handling waste because putting it anywhere will make our problems regarding waste worse. It
is also good to remember that our collective action is the key to efficient and effective proper solid
waste management system. Doing small things like putting our trash in a garbage can help a lot to
save this planet for the future generations. Let us all be the responsible stewards of this beautiful
planet so that our children and their children’s children can also appreciate and experience the
beauty of our environment.
