Assignment 4
Growing up, I have always had a passion for helping people. As I have gotten older, the
population I seek to help has changed due to the different experiences I have had. The audience
whom I have gravitated towards recently is those with disabilities. However, this does not just
mean physical limitations, but people who have mental or emotional disabilities as well. My goal
is for people with disabilities to fulfill the same life experiences, with the help of accessibility
accommodations, as those without. As I learn more about this specific population, and I see more
people who do not receive the same accessibility, my passion for helping them and give them a
more natural way of life continues to grow.
This specific passion began once I got a job at the University of North Florida’s
Americans with Disability Act (ADA) Compliance Office during my freshman year of college. I
did not know what the job entailed; however, I knew I was not a financially stable college
student who did not own a car and needed a job. Now, I have started my fourth year working at
the office and cannot imagine my life without it. I have gotten the opportunity to help students,
professors, and faculty on physical and web compliance accommodations. Working at the ADA
Compliance Office has changed the way I view daily tasks. This is because one might think that
everyday tasks like finding a bathroom or checking out a web page for office hours may seem
easy; however, if the bathroom is not up to code, or the website does not have audio
accommodations, a person who is blind may not be able to access these resources. I have fallen
in love with helping these people and making their day-to-day tasks that might be challenging
finally feel simple daily tasks.
To achieve these goals, I feel that graduating as a Public Health major is a great start. I
love this major because of its diversity and it allows me to feel like all of my goals can be
achieved. This diversity is shown through the five core areas of Public Health. The most exciting
area of Public Health to me deals with health policy and management. This is because the law is
something that everyone should know and abide by. It is also essential to have proper regulations
that seek to help all people, not just the majority. I believe the way we produce good laws is
through the decision making philosophy. This is because we need to consider that life is long,
and we are always learning from it. We, as Public Health Specialist have to take the CHES
responsibilities we have learned about and put them to work. CHES responsibility five,
administration, is important to me because developing policy to help manage people in health
education is something that everyone needs to work on. Health education is the reason why I
want to purse public health career because it is so board and can be applied everywhere.
I hope to gain more valuable knowledge of public health policy and management through
graduate school. The University of Florida is where I would love to be next fall. Their Master’s
in Public Health program will allow me to take the skills and ethics I have obtained in undergrad
and present them to help serve others. I want to be able to make a global change and help others
and not just on an individual level. That is why this program will be the perfect opportunity for
me to become more actively engaged and focused on the big picture in healthcare; which is to
empower others on a global scale and make a change that will allow us to be active in our
environment and help us not to be controlled by our surroundings. I want to serve people; my
passion is to serve those in need. What I love about that is everyone needs something, and that
need can always relate to public health. I will strive to meet the needs of people in healthcare
through civility, honesty, and practice. I one-day hope to run a hospital and use the knowledge
and skills that I was able to learn in undergrad and graduate school to make a difference in the
way we present and deliver healthcare.
