The Sumatran Tiger is the only tiger species on the island of

Sumatra within Indonesia. The Sumatran Tiger is critically
endangered due to deforestation, poaching and loss of habitat.
Approximately 78% of Sumatran tiger deaths are from
poaching. There are currently less than four hundred Sumatran
Tigers alive today. Since Sumatran Tigers are apex predators
and have no natural predators, it is shocking that Sumatran
Tigers are quickly going extinct JUST from humans.
No tiger’s stripes are alike. Each tiger has their own set of
stripes. Their stripes allow for easy camouflage, which lets
them sneak on prey. Their stealth when hunting will allow
them to consume their prey, preventing overpopulation.
Sumatran Tigers weigh between 165 - 308 pounds.
(74 - 139 kilograms). Their weight makes them strong
when attacking, and if they are sitting on top of an
animal, that animal might not squirm away. A tiger bite
can be up to 1000 pounds, making consuming prey a
quick and easy task.
A Sumatran Tiger’s paws are slightly webbed, allowing them
to swim across water quickly. This enables them to escape
from poachers and chase after prey. However, although they
can swim and run fast, it still doesn’t save them from
poachers.
In 1978, there were 1000 recorded Sumatran Tigers. In 2018, there
are now less than 400 Sumatran Tigers. Within just one island, in
just forty years, about 60% of the Sumatran Tiger population died.
Now only 40% of Sumatran Tigers are just waiting to die from
poachers, or natural disasters.
Why should you help?

As mentioned earlier, tigers are apex predators. Meaning they have no

natural predator. This works in our favor as they prevent
overpopulation. For example, the tiger prevents the overpopulation of
deer. If tigers didn’t hunt the deer, the deer would have less predators.
Having less predators means having more deer. With so many deer, this
herbivorous animal will eat plenty of plants. There would be many deer
that would reproduce, expanding their population even more. Also, not
to mention that the tiger is close to extinction, and we’d never see them
again if they were to go extinct. Which could be very soon.
How can you help?

You can help by supporting organizations such as WorldWildLife.org,

bigcatrescue.org, corbettfoundation.org and indonesia.wcs.org.

You could also help by giving a voice to the Sumatran Tiger. They don’t have a voice
of their own. Start signing petitions, visit animal charities and just spread the name of
the Sumatran Tiger. Spread their voice. If you live on the island of Sumatra, report
local authorities if you see Sumatran Tiger poaching.

One final way you could help is by adopting an animal at worldwildlife.org.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the Sumatran Tiger needs your help. They need all the help they
can get, but even one more supporter can make a difference. Sumatran Tigers are
critically endangered and might only survive another few years. If you’re ready to
support the Sumatran Tiger, visit worldwildlife.org for more information on
supporting the Sumatran Tiger.
