Activity Type Introduction

Writing, listening and In this fun activity, students play a game where they ask 'Is/Are
speaking activity there...?' questions in order to find out where they are.

Procedure

Divide the class into groups of eight.

Aim
To ask 'Is/Are there...?'
questions in order to find
out where you are.
Tell the students that you are going to stick a picture on each
student's back. Explain that the picture shows where the student
is.
The students' task is to ask questions in order to find out what
place is stuck on their back.

Ask the students to complete the eight 'Is/Are there...?' questions

Preparation
Make one copy of the
picture cards and two
copies of the question
cards for each group of
eight. Cut the cards out
as indicated. You will also
need to prepare some
sellotape.

where they are.
When the students have finished writing, stick a picture on each
student’s back.
Next, divide each group into four pairs.
Each student looks at the picture on their partner’s back.

The students then take it in turns to ask the questions on their

Level card to their partner to find out where they are.

Elementary The students listen to their partner's answers and mark them on
the card.
Time When the students have asked all the questions, they write where
20 minutes they think they are at the bottom of the card.

The students then see if they were right or wrong by taking the
picture off their back.

As an extension, redistribute the pictures and have the students

repeat the activity with a new partner.
