Exercise 2
Read the text and answer these following questions!
An engine produces power by burning air and fuel. The fuel is stored in a fuel tank. This fuel
tank is usually placed at the back of the car. The fuel tank is connected to a fuel pipe. The fuel
pipe carries the fuel to a fuel pump. The fuel pump is connected to the carburetor. The fuel
pump pumps the fuel into the carburetor. In the carburetor the fuel is mixed with air. The fuel
and the air are drawn into the engine. In the engine the fuel and the air are burned to produce
power.

CONDITIONAL TYPE I

A. Simple Present Tense.


SUBJECT + V1 / Vs/es + OBJECT / Adverb
They, We, I, You + V1 ( helping verb do for negative and interrogative)
Example: We know her name correctly.
I have a new black motorcycle.
He, She, It + Vs/es ( helping verb does for negative and interrogative)

Example: Rano goes to Bandung.


She has long curly hair.

SUBJECT + to be (am, are, is) + OBJECT / Adverb

I + am + Object/Adverb.

Example: I am a teacher.
I am very busy every morning.
They, We, You + are + Object/Adverb.
Example: They are new neighbors.
You are very happy.
He, She, It + is + Object/Adverb.
Example: She is my girlfriend.
Rano is a handsome pilot.
B. Future Tense.

SUBJECT + shall/will + V1 + OBJECT/Adverb


Example: We shall go to Jakarta next week.
We will borrow the book tomorrow morning.

C. Conditional Sentence type 1.


Conditional sentence is used to express possible condition. It consists of two clauses, the main clause and
the if clause.
The if clause gives a condition to the main clause. The condition is introduces with “If”,, that is why it is
called an “if-conditional clause”. The condition is real in a sense that the condition may actually happen in
the future.

Structurally, it can be drawn as follows:


Future Tense (main clause) + if + Simple Present (if clause).
or
If + Simple Present (if clause), Future Tense (main clause).

Example: If you are very happy, we will go to Jakarta.


or
We will go to Jakarta if you are very happy.

A Polite Request
If you park your car in the wrong place, a traffic policeman will soon find it. You will be very
lucky if he lets you go without a ticket. However, this does not always happen. Traffic police are
sometimes very polite.
During a holiday in Sweden, I found this note on my car: “Sir, we welcome you to our city. This
is a ‘NO PARKING’ area. You will enjoy your stay here if you pay attention to our street signs”. This not
is only a remember: “If you receive a request like this, you can not fail to obey it!”

Analytical Exposition Text


 An analytical exposition text evaluates a topic critically but focuses only one side of an argument.
 In your life if you have ever tried to persuade anyone on a certain issue or argued relentlessly about
something with someone, then you have used exposition.
 The argument and point of view have to be supported by facts and relevant information. The thesis
statement has to be reiterated in the conclusion.

Purpose
The purpose of exposition text is to persuade your audience to look at an issue with your perspective.
 Examples of exposition text are :
 Legal Defenses
 Speeches/lectures
 Editorials
 Letters
 Political Leaflets
 Newspaper articles
 Essays

2. Struktur text
a. Menyebutkan topik serta pandangan atau posisi penulis tentang topik tsb secara umum
b. Menyebutkan serangkaian argumentasi, secara analitis, yang masing-masing diawali dengan pernyataan
pendukung dan penjelasannya.
c. Menyimpulkan dengan menyebutkan kembali pandangan dan posisinya.

An exposition text needs to:


- Clearly state the point of view.
- Use valid research findings to support your viewpoint.
- Defend your viewpoint.
- Support the viewpoint with factual data like graphs, pictures, charts.

Structure of Exposition Text:


a. Title: Tells about the topic of the essay
b. Introduction: State the thesis statement of your text.
- This is the starting point of exposition essay.
- Here you state the topic and establish the point of view. (Thesis statement)
- Introductory statement should be a emotional statement or a question that is an attention grabber.
- A preview of the points you plan to make to support your thesis. (Argument)

c. Support the viewpoint with factual data like graphs, pictures, charts.
Body:
- A series of arguments to convince the audience.
- Each paragraph starts with new argument.
- Each Paragraph has a main point, reason for the main point and evidence to support the main point.
- Use of emotive words, mental verbs, causal conjunction to persuade the audience.
- Each paragraph has to be logically linked to the previous paragraph and to the thesis statement.

d. Conclusion: restatement of the thesis statement


- Reiterates or restates the thesis statement
- Summarizes what has been stated.

Language Features of an Exposition text:
Use descriptive persuasive words with emotive connotations to emphasize your viewpoint. These words can
either is positive or negative. Use thesaurus to find an appropriate word. For example:
- Instead of using bad USE appalling, unfavorable, ghastly, terrible .
- Instead of using good USE fantastic, incredible, momentous, remarkable
- Instead of using persuading USE convincing, urging, enticing, realistic.
- Instead of using Persuasive USE credible, realistic, rational, sane, coherent.

Use present tense such as lions live, I eat, cheetahs run.

Use Mental Verbs such as I believe, I prefer, Agree, I doubt, I disagree

Use Saying Verbs to support the argument such as people say, it is said, research indicates, etc.

Use Connecting words to link to arguments so that the flow of argument is logical and fluent.
Some examples are:
- Additionally, furthermore, not only, also, in addition, moreover, like wise etc.

Use Causal Conjunction to indicate cause or reason of what is being stated.


For example:
- Because, consequently, despite, due to, for that, reason, incase, otherwise, yet, first, second etc.

Use words that express the author's attitude- to qualify or confirm.


For example:
- Will, frequently, may, must, usually, typically, habitually, commonly, doubtless, characteristically, in all
probability etc.

Use persuasive techniques:


- Use Generalizations to support viewpoints or arguments. Generalizations are common beliefs, general
statements.
- Use evidence and facts to back up the generalizations like using research, expert opinion, testimony or
quotes.
- Use exaggeration to make things or issues appear better or worse than they actually are.
