Mac Filtering

1. Open your browser.
2. Type in the default gateway of your network in the
address bar of the browser and open it
(by default it is 192.168.1.1)
3. Type in username and password
(by default username= admin, password=admin)
o Note: If you have forgotten the credentials and
don’t have them saved anywhere, you would
have to restart the router by inserting a pin into a
small hole located on the router, and holding it
for 5-8 seconds.
4. Once you are inside the router, you would notice a menu
bar on the left side of the window.
5. Select “wireless” from the bar, then select “mac filtering”
6. If you haven’t already added any mac addresses in the
filter, it will be disabled.
7. Click on “Add”, then type in the MAC address of the
device you want to filter and click on “Apply/Save”.
8. The wireless connection will restart, after waiting for a
few seconds refresh the page.
9. You can see that the MAC address have been entered in
the filter.
10. Notice 2 labels “Allow” and “Deny”
o By clicking on allow, only the filtered mac
addresses can get connected.
o By clicking on deny, the filtered mac addresses
will not be able to get connected.
11. Click on the desired option, then click Enable.
12. It will take a few seconds to restart the connection.
13. Congratulations, mac filtering is done!
Wireless network security primarily protects a
access attempts.
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy): Developed in 1999,
earliest wireless security protocol, includes a 40 - bit
encryption key, easily hackable, outdated.
WPA (Wi-fi Protected Access): Stronger encryption,
uses TKIP (temporal key integrity protocol),
generates a 128-bit temporary key which changes
dynamically for each data packet, outdated as TKIP
has some vulnerabilities (e.g. could only encrypt
“short” (128 byte) data packets).
WPA 2 (Wi-fi Protected Access 2):
Stronger encryption than WPA, uses AES (advanced
encryption standard) (AES is global standard of
encryption and it is used to keep a significant amount
of our communications safe, fast and secure,
adopted by Facebook, WhatsApp, and U.S. federal
government etc.)
Mixed WPA, WPA-2: For compatibility purposes,
older devices don’t support AES, so they will connect
to TKIF, whereas modern devices will automatically
connect to AES.
