R&S Conveyor Drawing Design Checking

(rev 0, 12/9/07)

Detailing issues:

1. The weight of all steel shown on each drawing should be indicated in the weight
box. The S01 drawing should have the total weight of all the structural steel (no
grating, Gripstrut, siding, etc.) and should be the sum of all weight box numbers.
2. The sequence number should be shown in the sequence number box.

Work Point Issues:

1. Do the work points on the Structural drawings agree with the work points on the
Layout drawings in plan and elevation?
2. Does the sum of dimensions between all the bents and stringer legs add up to the
distance between the work points within 1/16” to 1/8”? (This a check of Autocad
rounding errors which can accumulate)
3. Does the radius on any vertical curves in the system agree with that shown on the
Layout drawings?
4. Does the conveyor angle of inclination shown on the structural drawings agree
with that shown on the Layout drawings?
5. Do bent locations in plan and elevation agree with that shown on the Layout
drawings?

Idler issues:

1. Does the top of steel (of truss chord or channel stringer) relative to the belt line
agree with the troughing idler backing dimension shown for the brand of idler
being used?
2. Impact idlers are frequently higher than regular troughing idlers and there is
usually a 10 or 12 gage deck plate which the impact idlers sit on top of. Has the
stringer design in the impact areas been adjusted for this?
3. Does the idler bolt hole diameter agree with that shown on the idler drawings?
4. The hole in the idler bracket is slotted. Does the idler bolt hole pattern fall
approximately in the middle of the slot to allow the idler to be adjusted for
training the belt?
5. Does the troughing & return idler location agree with that shown on the Layout
drawings?
6. The width of the idler bolt hole pattern is always Belt Width + 9”. Does this
match with the truss or channel stinger cross section?
7. The return belt on a conveyor can wander side to side by + or – 3”. Does the
return belt clear all steel inside the truss or other structure by at least 3”?
8. Are the location of special idlers called out (Impact, Transition, Live Shaft, etc.)
as shown on the Layout drawings?

Page 1
Support issues:

1. Does the anchor bolt pattern for each bent, tower and stringer leg agree with the
concrete drawings in terms of bolt diameter, bolt pattern orientation and location
of top of concrete?
2. Are shear lugs on the bents oriented in the correct direction? Is a pocket provided
in the concrete for the shear lug?
3. Are the elevations of the truss shoe pins called out on the S01 drawing? Do these
elevations agree with that shown on each bent drawing?
4. If a block is made from each truss and bent drawing can all the blocks be
assembled correctly, with no truss too short or bent to high or low?
5. At the high end of the conveyor where a truss enters a building, does the building
top of steel agree with that shown on the conveyor drawings?
6. Do bents supported by the customer’s steel agree with the FL drawing that was
sent to the customer for coordination purposes?
7. Are the location of expansion joints correct? Are sliding truss shoes called out
correctly?

Mechanical/Platework Issues:

1. Does the bolt pattern provided for the head chute agree with the Platework
drawing?
2. If there is not a shaft mounted drive, is the bolt pattern for the drive base correct?
If R&S is supplying the drive base, is it shown on the drawings?
3. If there is a backstop, is the torque arm shown on the drawings? Is the support for
the backstop shown on the drawings?
4. Does the return belt clear all building steel?
5. If the return belt is under high tension, is there a live shaft idler or pulley provided
to position the return belt to enter the truss at the correct elevation?
6. The stand for the gravity takeup pulleys should be one weldment. Are the gravity
takeup pulleys shown at the correct elevation and does the bearing center agree
with that shown on the mechanical drawings?
7. Is the guard for the gravity takeup pulleys shown on the drawings?
8. Is the tail pulley stand shown on the drawings? Is the table for the tail pulley
stand filled out on the Standard drawing? Do the bearing centers agree with the
Mechanical drawings?
9. Are reference notes provided for Platework head chute and skirtboard drawings?
10. Does the weight shown for the counterweight agree with the Mechanical
drawings?

Standard Drawing issues:

1. Is the truss shoe drawing filled out?

2. Is the tail pulley frame drawing filled out?
3. Is the plow drawing filled out?

Page 2
4. Is the gravity takeup drawing filled out

Stair & Platform issues:

1. Does stair slope agree with that called for on standard drawing S01?
2. There should be an intermediate platform on stairs rising more than 12’-0”, is that
platform provided where required?
3. Each stair should be shown in plan and elevation with the rises and runs explicitly
called out and at a big enough scale to read easily. Is that the case?
4. Do top of steel or grating elevations called out on the truss drawings agree with
drawings of the details of the stairs and platforms?
5. References to the proper handrail post connection should be shown on the
drawings.
6. There should be at least one hand rail on all inclined conveyors, whether above or
below ground.

Truss and Tower design issues:

1. The largest axial force, as calculated by hand or computer analysis, should be

shown on the drawings for connection design.
2. Any non-standard connection has to be shown.
3. Bolted members in truss splices should be labeled as “BOLTED”.
4. The top of steel at all floors and platforms must be called out. Check for
consistency between drawings.
5. Orientation of members in a truss should be shown by a cartoon, big enough to
see, where required.
6. It is not necessary to show the orientation of a floor beam. Floor beams should be
shown as a single line.
