machine using Fig. 7.8-3 in page 303 of the text book (here the rotor is represented by 3

2𝜋 2𝜋
𝑣𝑎 (𝑡) = 𝑉𝑎 cos 𝜔𝑒 𝑡; 𝑣𝑏 (𝑡) = 𝑉𝑏 𝑐𝑜𝑠 (𝜔𝑒 𝑡 − ) and 𝑣𝑐 (𝑡) = 𝑉𝑐 𝑐𝑜𝑠 (𝜔𝑒 𝑡 + )

Write down the expressions for vq(t), vd(t) and vo(t) in ‘arbitrary reference frames’ rotating at
speeds of (i) ωe, (ii) –ωe. In both cases assume that the initial position (i.e at t=0) of the q axis
of the rotating reference frame coincided with the stationary a axis.

7. The phases of a 3 phase 4 wire star connected circuit consists of equal resistances of 10 Ω
and equal inductances of 100 mH connected in series. The following three phase voltages
(between phase and neutral) are switched on to this circuit at t = 0.
𝑣𝑎𝑠 (𝑡) = √2. 100𝑐𝑜 𝑠(100𝜋𝑡)
𝑣𝑏𝑠 (𝑡) = √2. 80𝑐𝑜 𝑠(100𝜋𝑡 − 120𝑜 )
𝑣𝑐𝑠 (𝑡) = √2. 60𝑐𝑜 𝑠(100𝜋𝑡 + 120𝑜 )
Assuming initial phase currents to be zero find out the expressions of the phase currents for t≥0.

8. “Slip test” is often performed to find out the direct and quadrature axis reactances of
salient pole synchronous generators. In this test the rotor is run at a speed very close to
the synchronous speed (slip ≤ 1%) with the field circuit open. A balanced three phase
voltage of approximately 25% of the rated value and of rated frequency is applied to the
stator. Oscilloscope trace of the armature line current shows a sine wave with periodically
varying amplitude. The quadrature axis reactance is computed as the applied stator phase
voltage (peak) divided by the maximum of the armature current amplitude while the
direct axis reactance is computed as the applied stator phase voltage (peak) divided by the
minimum of the armature current amplitude. Justify this procedure with the help of the
direct and quadrature axis equivalent circuit of a three phase salient pole synchronous
generator. Assume that the generator has no damper winding and its stator resistance is
negligible. Do these calculations give the actual value of the direct and quadrature axis
reactances of the machine?

9. A balanced three phase sinusoidal supply is connected to the HV side of a three phase
three limb core type transformer with Dy11 connection. The LV side feeds a balanced
three phase R-L load through three wire connection (i.e. isolated neutral). There is no
mutual coupling among the load inductances. For the transformer assume that the
magnetizing flux produced by any coil on a particular limb is equally divided between the
other two limbs. Develop a q-d-o axis model of the system in a reference frame rotating
with an arbitrary angular speed ω. Assume all necessary parameters for the circuit
elements and variables.

10. A 4 pole, 50 Hz, star connected 3 phase squirrel cage induction machine has the
following parameters per phase.

𝑟𝑠 = 1.85Ω, 𝑋𝑙𝑠 = 2.29Ω, 𝑋𝑚 = 56.8𝛺, 𝑋𝑙𝑟 = 2.82 Ω, 𝑟𝑟′ = 3.82 Ω
The machine was initially rotating at 1500 rpm with open circuited stator terminals. A
DC voltage of 15 V is applied between the a and b phase stator terminals ( a positive with
respect to b) with the stator c phase terminal shorted with the stator b phase terminal.
Assuming the motor speed to remain constant at 1500 rpm find out the steady state
currents in all the stator and the rotor phases as well as the electromagnetic torque
produced by the machine.

11. Each phase winding of the stator of a 3 phase 2 pole Permanent magnet synchronous
machine consists of full pitched uniformly distributed coils with nc number of conductors
per radian. The permanent magnet rotor produces a symmetrical trapezoidal airgap flux
density waveform which remains constant at a value ±Bmax over a span of 150o in the
positive and negative direction respectively. The rotor rotates at a speed of Nr rpm (i)
Find out an expression for the voltage induced in the a phase stator winding.

12. A 64 pole, 60 Hz, 325 MVA, 20 kV(line to line) 3 phase salient pole synchronous
generator has rs = 0.00234Ω, Xls = 0.1478Ω, Xd = 1.0467Ω and Xq = 0.5911Ω. The
generator supplies rated MVA at the rated terminal voltage to an infinite bus at a lagging
power factor of 0.85. Draw the phasor diagram of the generator under this operating
condition. Hence find out the open circuit induced voltage (line to line) and the torque
angle ‘δ’. A three phase short circuit fault occurs at the generator terminal. Find out the
critical clearing time for the circuit breaker used to clear this fault.
