A RUN TO REMEMBER
Bison safety Heagle has been on the field for NDSU’s string of five straight wins over FBS teams
By Jeff Kolpack
jkolpack@forumcomm.com
AMES, Iowa – It’s one of those odd facts
that will probably never be equaled in the
history of NCAA Division I FCS. But
North Dakota State’s 34-14 win over Iowa
State on Saturday afternoon was the fifth
time Bison safety Colten Heagle has been
on the field for a victory over an FBS
team.
He’s 5-0.
“The guys that have gone through here,
the friends that I have made and being
able to be 5-0 against FBS teams is just
something you kind of dream about,”
Heagle said. “It’s awesome being with
these guys and being able to accomplish
something like that.”
The asterisk in the 5-0 came in 2012
when the Bison defeated Colorado State
22-7. Heagle started the game, but left in
pain when he tore his ACL.
Because it was the second game of the
season, he was awarded a medical hard-
ship, essentially getting a do-over.
He returned last year with seven solo
tackles in the 24-21 upset of Kansas State.
Heagle was a special teams player as a
true freshman when NDSU defeated
Kansas 6-3.
“That was four weeks into the college
career,” he said. “I was just trying to get
the bearings on everything. The last cou-
ple years have been unbelievable.”
NDSU is now 8-3 lifetime against FBS
opponents.
Heagle had eight tackles against the
Cyclones, including a key interception in
the third quarter. With NDSU holding a
20-14 lead, receiver Allen Lazard bobbled
quarterback Sam B. Richardson’s pass
right into the arms of Heagle at the
Cyclones’ 40-yard line.
NDSU converted the turnover into a
John Crockett 3-yard touchdown run and
a 27-14 advantage heading into the fourth
quarter. With NDSU’s veteran defense, it
turned out to be a tough road for the
Cyclones.
Especially with players who are unde-
feated in FBS games.
“Coming to North Dakota State, I never North Dakota
would have imagined for (Heagle) to go 5-0 State safety
and me go 4-0,” said senior safety Chris-
tian Dudzik. “But once I got here, I started Colten Heagle
to see the way we prepare for games, the tackles Iowa
way we do things in the offseason.” State’s Dondre
Heagle also attributed preparation as a Daley during the
big reason for the FBS success.
“We treat it just like any other team,” he season-opening
said. “The offseason, going into fall camp; game for both
it’s just simple preparation. We spent two teams Saturday
weeks on these guys.” in Ames.
