1. An exterior wall of a house may be approximated by a 10cm layer of common

brick (k=0.7W/mK) followed by a 3.8cm layer of gypsum plaster (k=0.48W/mK).
What thickness of loosely packed rock-wool insulation (k=0.065 W/mK) should be
added to reduce the heat loss through the wall by 80%?

2. A thick-walled tube of stainless steel (k=19W/mK) with 2cm inner diameter and
4cm outer diameter is covered with a 3cm layer of asbestos insulation
(k=0.2W/mK). If the inside wall temperature of the pipe is maintained at 600oC,
calculate the heat loss per meter pipe of the length. The outer layer of insulation
is maintained at 300oC.

3. One side of a copper block 5cm thick is maintained at 2600C. The other side is
covered with a layer of fiber glass 2.5 cm thick. The outside of the fiber glass is
maintained at 38oC and the total heat flow through the copper-fiber–glass
combination is 44kW. What is the area of the slab?
kcopper = 20W/mK ; kfiber glass = 0.078W/mK

4. Water with specific heat of 4.18kJ/kg oC at the rate of 68kg/min is heated from 35
to 75oC by an oil having a specific heat of 1.9kJ/kgoC. The fluids are used in a
countercurrent heat exchanger and the oil enters the exchanger at 110oC and
leaves at 75oC. The overall heat transfer coefficient is 320W/m2oC. Calculate the
heat exchanger area.
If the above heat exchanger is replaced by a one shell pass and two tube passes
exchanger with water making the shell pass, determine the area required for this
exchanger. Assume that the overall heat transfer coefficient remains unchanged.

5. A 2 shell passes, 4 tube passes heat exchanger is availabe for the purpose of
cooling an oil flow from 110 to 50oC. The oil flowrate is 2kg/s (Cp=2.25kJ/kgK).
The coolant is water (Cp=4.2kJ/kgK) which enters at a flowrate of 1kg/s at 20oC.
The heat transfer coefficient for this heat exchanger when it is new is 400W/m2K.
After prolong usage, fouling factor inside the tube and outside the tube are 3500
and 5200W/m2K respectively. The inner and outer diameter of the tube is 2.6cm
and 3.2cm. What is the required area of heat transfer and the water exit
temperature? Assume that oil flows in the shell side.

6. It is desired to design a heat exchanger (1 shell pass – 1 tube pass) to cool 50,000
kg/hr of a process liquid from 150 to 600C. The specific heat capacity of the
process liquid is 3.5kJkg-1 0C-1. Water of specific heat capacity 4.25kJkg-1 0C-1 and
density 1,000kg/m3 is to be used as the coolant. The inlet and outlet water
temperatures should be 25 and 450C, respectively. Determine,

(a) the required mass flowrate of water (kg/hr)

(b) the LMTD for counter-current operation and
(c) the required heat transfer area (m2) given that the clean overall heat
transfer coefficient is 0.72kWm-2K-1 and the combined resistance due to dirt
is 0.0005m2KW-1.

7. A pipe of 10m length, 5cm inner diameter and 5mm thickness carries hot water
with a bulk temperature of 1000C. Heat is lost from the water in the pipe to air at
300C surrounding the pipe. The thermal conductivity of the pipe wall is 5W/mK.
The convective heat transfer coefficients are 5W/m2K on the air side and
250W/m2K on the water side. Calculate the following:

(a) the overall heat transfer coefficient.

(b) the rate of heat transfer.
(c) the temperatures on the inner and outer pipe surface.

8. It is desired to concentrate NaOH solution from 12.5% to 45% in a single effect

evaporator. The feed solution enters the evaporator at a rate of 6.25kg/s at 50oC,
and steam is available at 5 bar (absolute). The evaporator is at atmospheric
pressure and the overall heat transfer coefficient of the evaporator is 5260W/m2-K
and the specific heat capacity of the feed is 3000J/kg-K.
Determine heat transfer area required.

9. A vertical plate with a width and height of 0.5m and 1m, respectively, is exposed
to saturated water vapour at 1 atm. If the surface of the plate is maintained at
35oC, find the rate of heat transfer to the surface and the rate at which vapour is
condensed on the surface.

10. Given that a steel pipe with ID = 2cm and OD = 5cm and thermal conductivity of
36W/m-K is insulated with a 2cm thick layer of insulation (k = 0.02W/m-K). The
inside surface of the pipe is maintained at temperature of 60oC and the outside
surface of the insulation is maintained at 25oC. Find the rate of heat transfer
from the pipe per unit length.

11. Steam condenses on the outer surface of a pipe. The coefficient of heat transfer is
known to be 10,500W/m2-K and the temperature is 107.8oC. The interior is cooled
by a flow of water at a velocity of 2.45m/s and a bulk mean temperature of 65.6oC.
The pipe inner and outer diameters are 0.0266m and 0.0335m, respectively. The
length of pipe is 0.35m long.
